Book excerpt: In light of the scholarly debate surrounding the goals and mixed effects of development programs, particularly in recent years in relation to microfinance, this study investigates the effects of economic development programs on Latin American women entrepreneurs in San Francisco0́9s Mission District. It demonstrates that microfinance, when combined with education, can provide important non-economic benefits that contribute to increased freedoms and capabilities for immigrant women entrepreneurs. Drawing on qualitative interviews with ten business owners, as well as a review of the existing literature surrounding development, immigration, and gender, this research argues that owning a business in the US can produce enhanced freedoms and capabilities for Latin American immigrant women, including changing identities and family dynamics and increased social opportunities like education and healthcare. This study also expands the notion of capital beyond the economic by considering how the shared cultural capital of the Latino community can contribute to a strong network of social capital among immigrant women entrepreneurs, which in turn helps to sustain their businesses and ensure their continued economic success. Several potential barriers to success that this group of immigrant women faces are the challenges of renegotiating gender norms upon transition to a new culture and joining the work force, as well as the obstacles and social stigmas associated with immigration status and citizenship rights. This study concludes that these barriers can prevent the enjoyment of other freedoms like political participation and that displacement of immigrants through gentrification also threatens economic success by devaluing established immigrant networks of social capital.

Book excerpt: Social capital is proving to be an emerging area of study in the overall study of entrepreneurship. The importance of capital, in all its forms, in achieving successful entrepreneurial outcomes cannot be overstated. This thesis explores the relationship of social capital to the acquisition of financial capital, specifically borrowed funds, and the moderating effect that gender may play. Understanding whether gender may play a role in the use of social capital amongst entrepreneurs in order to gain financial capital is important because while the number of women-owned businesses is increasing, the literature points out that there are still barriers to success. Additionally, using the framework of role congruity theory, the question of whether gender plays a moderating role in increasing social capital, thereby resulting in increases in financial capital acquired through borrowing is examined. This thesis advances the literature through the exploration of three hypotheses. The first is that there is a positive relationship between an entrepreneur's level of social capital and ability to borrow funds. The second hypothesis is that male entrepreneurs receive more external funding through borrowing than female entrepreneurs. The final hypothesis is that the relationship between an entrepreneur's social capital and borrowed funds is stronger for men than for women. Regression analysis supported hypotheses 1 and 2 but did not support hypothesis 3. These findings can support improvements among practitioners who help entrepreneurs seek positive outcomes.

But variations exist also across women entrepreneurs in various countries, and between women who are involved in entrepreneurship and those who are not. Overall, the explanation for the behavior of women entrepreneurs and its distinctiveness is complex and multifaceted. Evidence to date suggests that reasons contributing to explaining these differences include demographic and socio-economic variables, subjective perceptions, and cultural factors and institutions, and that such differences have significant implications at the macro-economic level. Studying female entrepreneurship allows researchers to ask questions that shed light on the linkages between entrepreneurship and wealth creation, employment choices and cognition, human capital accumulation and labor market structure, employment choice and family dynamics, business creation and peace, and many others. From a scientific point of view, the study of female entrepreneurship as a distinct area of inquiry informs us not only about women behavior, but also about entrepreneurial and human behaviors in general. All over the world, female entrepreneurship has become an important component of academic and policy conversations around entrepreneurship. Still, there is much we don't yet understand.
