Book Synopsis Women, Unionism and Loyalism in Northern Ireland by : Rachel Ward
Download or read book Women, Unionism and Loyalism in Northern Ireland written by Rachel Ward and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politically active unionist and loyalist women in Northern Ireland are rendered relatively invisible because of the predominantly male public faces of unionism and loyalism. This is evident in the media images of the male-dominated annual parades by organisations such as the Orange Order, statements by mostly male political party spokespersons, and the murals of loyalist paramilitaries that designate territorial possession and seldom depict female involvement. The book seeks to counter the stereotype that unionist and loyalist women 'just make the tea'. The aim of the book is to shed light on the form and extent of unionist and loyalist women's political participation. The research conducted shows that unionist and loyalist women are more active political participants than the tea-making stereotype suggests; they have varied political roles, although these are often invisible. Whilst exploring the national and other cross-cutting identities held by unionist and loyalist women and the motivations behind their political activity, the evidence also suggests that the women have been motivated, at least in part, by their nationalism. However, this approach does not fully explain the form and extent of respondents' political action, apparent from a consideration of comparative figures of women and political participation. The book concludes that a greater synthesis with the literature on gender and political participation is needed.Ã?Â?Ã?Â?
Book Synopsis Politics and Gender in Ireland by : Fiona Buckley
Download or read book Politics and Gender in Ireland written by Fiona Buckley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between women, the state and democratic politics in Ireland today. It highlights the conservatism of the political culture shared by all traditions on the island, and how this culture circumscribes women’s political agency in Northern Ireland and Ireland. The book explores the opportunities and obstacles to women’s participation and representation on each side of the border. The chapters take the view that public decision-making institutions and processes are subject to rules and practices that reinforce the gendered foundations of democratic politics. They document women’s continuing quest for full participation and equal representation in these male-gendered arenas. The contributors focus on the marginalised experiences of women in modern politics in Ireland and detail their efforts to challenge the masculinized status quo. The book addresses the classical issues of citizenship, participation, representation and equal rights in a sustained analysis of the political systems on the island. It also deals with modern issues – multiculturalism, peace-building, the male-gendered legislature and the unequal nature of women’s citizenship in constitutional, institutional and policy contexts. The book is completed by a comprehensive appendix of all women elected to political office on the island from 1918-2013. This book was published as a special issue of Irish Political Studies.

Download or read book Women Divided written by Rosemary Sales and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing Irish peace process has renewed interest in the current social and political problems of Northern Ireland. In bringing together the issues of gender and inequality, Women Divided, a title in the International Studies of Women and Place series, offers new perspectives on women's rights and contemporary political issues. Women Divided argues that religious and political sectarianism in Northern Ireland has subordinated women. A historical review is followed by an analysis of the contemporary scene-- state, market (particularly employment patterns), family and church--and the role of women's movements. The book concludes with an in-depth critique of the current peace process and its implications for women's rights in Northern Ireland, arguing that women's rights must be a central element in any agenda for peace and reconciliation.
Book Synopsis Women and Citizenship in Britain and Ireland in the 20th Century by : Esther Breitenbach
Download or read book Women and Citizenship in Britain and Ireland in the 20th Century written by Esther Breitenbach and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuing under-representation of women in political and public life remains a matter of concern across a wide range of countries, including the UK and Ireland. Within the UK it is a topical issue as political parties currently debate strategies, often controversial, which will increase women's representation. At the same time, devolution has ushered in significant change in the level of women's representation in Scotland and Wales and improved representation for women in Northern Ireland. That such increases in women's representation in political institutions have been slow in coming is indisputable, given that full enfranchisement of women on equal terms with men was achieved in Ireland in 1921 and in the UK in 1928.
Book Synopsis Ex-Combatants, Gender and Peace in Northern Ireland by : Azrini Wahidin
Download or read book Ex-Combatants, Gender and Peace in Northern Ireland written by Azrini Wahidin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the contours of women's involvement in the Irish Republican Army, political protest and the prison experience in Northern Ireland. Through the voices of female and male combatants, it demonstrates that women remained marginal in the examination of imprisonment during the Conflict and in the negotiated peace process. However, the book shows that women performed a number of roles in war and peace that placed constructions of femininity in dissent. Azrini Wahidin argues that the role of the female combatant is not given but ambiguous. She indicates that a tension exists between different conceptualisations of societal security, where female combatants both fought against societal insecurity posed by the state and contributed to internal societal dissonance within their ethno-national groups. This book tackles the lacunae that has created a disturbing silence and an absence of a comprehensive understanding of women combatants, which includes knowledge of their motivations, roles and experiences. It will be of particular interest to scholars of criminology, politics and peace studies.

Book Synopsis Politics In Northern Ireland by : Rick Wilford
Download or read book Politics In Northern Ireland written by Rick Wilford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the staggering number of books related to the Northern Ireland political arena, most of the literature concentrates on only a few dimensions of ?the conflict? and especially on constitutional policy and the on-going search for a resolution of the antagonisms. This original textbook, the first of its kind, serves as a comprehensive examination of the subject by exploring these topics and other important dimensions of politics which have been overlooked and undervalued.Politics in Northern Ireland is written by a team of distinguished academics, drawn from both within and outside Northern Ireland. It adopts the analytic tools of political science and brings a comparative perspective to bear on the politics of Northern Ireland. Early chapters examine the historic sources of conflict, analyze the period since the outbreak of the modern troubles, and discuss the differences between the communities. The book then examines the nature of parties, elections, and elective assemblies, before focusing on policy matters, such as fair employment, policing, and gender. In the concluding chapter, contributors consider relations with the Republic of Ireland and discuss events as current as today's headlines, including the historic breakthrough in negotiations, the referendums, and the Assembly elections. The result is a well-rounded core text designed for the classroom, as well as for those interested in learning more about different facets of politics in Northern Ireland.

Book Synopsis Irish Women and Nationalism by : Louise Ryan
Download or read book Irish Women and Nationalism written by Louise Ryan and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of Irish nationalism have been primarily historical in scope and overwhelmingly male in content. Too often, the ‘shadow of the gunman’ has dominated. Little recognition has been given to the part women have played, yet over the centuries they have undertaken a variety of roles – as combatants, prisoners, writers and politicians. In this exciting new book the full range of women’s contribution to the Irish nationalist movement is explored by writers whose interests range from the historical and sociological to the literary and cultural. From the little known contribution of women to the earliest nationalist uprisings of the 1600s and 1700s, to their active participation in the republican campaigns of the twentieth century, different chapters consider the changing contexts of female militancy and the challenge this has posed to masculine images and structures. Using a wide range of sources, including textual analysis, archives and documents, newspapers and autobiographies, interviews and action research, individual writers examine sensitive and highly complex debates around women’s role in situations of conflict. At the cutting edge of contemporary scholarship, this is a major contribution to wider feminist debates about the gendering of nationalism, raising questions about the extent to which women’s rights, demands and concerns can ever be fully accommodated within nationalist movements.
