Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, there has been little coordinated research on the role of women in the economics of developing countries, or on the impact of the international economy on women in those countries. Here, Susan Joekes not only examines women who are engaged in what is defined as gainful, or wage earning employment, she also considers the role of women in unpaid labor such as household work, farm work on their own land, and other activities that require managing resources. Specially commissioned by the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW), this study examines such topics as trade and finance, technological change, agriculture, industry, services, and emerging trends in the international economy as related to women, and concludes with proposals for innovative development policies.
Book Synopsis Women and Industrialization in Asia by : Susan Horton
Download or read book Women and Industrialization in Asia written by Susan Horton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the female work force has played a large part in the Asian `export miracle.' Yet their role has commonly been depicted as confined to sweat shops and tea houses. This book examines the bigger picture regarding women in the labour market and how this has been changing in the course of development and industrialisation. Drawing on labour force survey data from across the continent, the book includes studies on India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. Written in an accessible style and with the key issues amply supported by up-to-date quantitative data, Women and Industrialisation in Asia produces some surprising results and dispels some common myths regarding the position of female workers in the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting State, Capital and Patriarchy brings together documentation of women's struggles in the process of industrialisation, within and outside traditional workers' organizations. With contributions from researchers and activists particularly in Asia, Africa and Latin America, the volume gives a broad display of both the constraints, and the ingenuity and determination with which women workers strive to improve their situation. Through both theory and rich empirical detail, the volume demonstrates the integral linkages between the home, workplace, and the state and international arenas, and between activists and academe in response to technological and industrial restructuring.

Book Synopsis Women, Globalization and Fragmentation in the Developing World by : H. Afshar
Download or read book Women, Globalization and Fragmentation in the Developing World written by H. Afshar and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-07-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of globalization has had a dramatic impact on the lives of women in developing countries in the past decade. They have been increasingly drawn into insecure flexible employment working for the world market. The feminisation of the labour market has increased the burdens on women, and the inability of men to access full-time well-remunerated employment has exacerbated the process of male out-migration and has left many families headed by women. At the same time the reduction in state services and welfare has increased the burdens placed on women. Nevertheless the consequences of globalization have been different for different women in different places. In some circumstances it has created opportunities for greater empowerment, whilst in others it has stimulated a reaction and increased the subordination of women. This book explores the experiences of women in diverse local contexts within different cultures and faiths, drawing on case studies from Asia, Africa and Latin America. It draws out the contradictory and fragmented impact of globalization at the local level on the lives of women in the developing world.
