Book excerpt: This book deals with the effectiveness and the capability of microfinance institutions (MFIs) to enhance women’s livelihoods and empowerment and to mitigate the effects of HIV and AIDS in Côte d’Ivoire. The results show that MFI credit causes positive and negative effects. MFI credit has improved incomes, the level of farm production and human and social capital. MFI credit has also enhanced women’s decision-making power within households due to their new ability to contribute to the improvement of the household standard of living. Furthermore, women’s empowerment regarding the demand for and the use of credit give them more opportunity to obtain MFI credit. Despite the positive effects of MFIs on women’s income, this publication shows that loan repayment was not successful among some female borrowers due to the fact that the loan has not been used for investment purposes. For MFIs, the diversion of loans can endanger their functioning and sustainability and therefore their effectiveness in rural areas. Regarding HIV, this book highlights the diversity and the specificity of the way HIV-affected individuals are financially supported by credit institutions. Both the direct and indirect effects of HIV and AIDS on women’s livelihood and MFIs are analysed.

Book excerpt: In India, micro finance is a movement with the underlying objective of helping poor households to have access to financial services, including credit at affordable cost. Many of those who promote micro finance believe that such access will help poor people get out of poverty. For others, micro finance is a way to promote economic development, employment, and growth through the support of micro entrepreneurs and small businesses. Women in India are typically poorer than men and have fewer options for earning a livelihood that provides adequate food, housing, and education for their children. However, they are also viewed as the change agents of the family. Women are more likely to invest their earnings into improving the lives of the families. By encouraging women to take charge of their futures, micro finance institutions can impact families and whole communities. However, the pace of women empowerment in India, through micro finance, is slow, due to a variety of constraints which urgently need to be rooted out. This book examines some of the issues that need to be addressed in order to empower the lives of India's women through micro finance.

Book excerpt: This paper compares the loans granted to male and female entrepreneurs by a French microfinance institution (MFI). The sample period is split in two: before and after the MFI implemented France's regulatory EUR 10,000 loan ceiling. In the first period, the MFI does not co-finance projects with mainstream banks and loan size is gender-insensitive. In the second period, the MFI does co-finance above-ceiling projects with mainstream banks, and we observe a gender gap in loan size. The results suggest that co-financing leads the originally gender-neutral MFI to import disparate treatment from mainstream banks.

Book excerpt: In Uganda, women especially those in rural areas have been identified as the majority among the poor with neither a steady income nor collateral to secure loans in formal banks. As a result, a variety of microfinance initiatives were designed combining financing and social inter-mediation strategies to enable the poor access credit using a member s savings rather than formal collateral such as land. The government of Uganda and the private sector have invested a substantial amount of money towards achieving women s economic empowerment through microfinance institutions. Despite this investment, information regarding women economic empowerment through the use of loan facilities is still lacking. This book analyses the factors that constrain women in the access and use of credit for economic empowerment. The main argument here is that provision of credit alone, is not sufficient enough to elevate the economic status of the poor. The main idea here is that women need to play an active role in their own empowerment by being facilitated to make informed business choices and participate in making decisions concerning the allocation and control of their income.

Book excerpt: Developing countries like Ethiopia, Microfinance institutions play a vital role in reduction of poverty and improvement the living condition of poor people particularly women who did not have access to formal financial services. One of the objectives of Millennium Development Goals(MDG) is women's empowerment and gender equality. Economic empowerment is improving women's access to income-earning opportunities and productive assets. Women are the main participants and beneficiaries of microfinance programs in many countries. Microfinance serves as a means to empower the poor women, to create their own assets and involve them in decision making. This book is concentrated on the impact of microfinance programs on economic empowerment of rural women. Thus, compared with the result of non-clients, clients of Wisdom MFI improved their household incomes, access to and control over household resources and saving practices at adama district in Ethiopia. Strengthening microfinance programs, capacitating clients on use and management of financial activities and integration of external shocks in development intervention will enhance more economic empowerment of rural women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than one billion people still live below the poverty line – most of them in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Financial inclusion is a major issue, as more than three-quarters of the numbers of poor and disadvantaged women and men do not have access to financial products and services, such as bank accounts, affordable and suitable loans, and insurance. The key objective of this book is to provide practical case studies of financial inclusion, rather than focus on academic debates such as the ideological basis of promoting microfinance. Using the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals as an overall framing of the issues, it shows how poor and disadvantaged women and men can be bankable if the right facilitation for maximizing opportunities and addressing constraints are in place. Case studies confirm that achieving inclusive and sustainable access to financial products and services goes beyond simply enabling poor and disadvantaged women and men to have access to credit, or the ability to open a bank account. Examples from Africa, Asia and Latin America demonstrate encouraging progress in making microcredit accessible to millions of poor people. The foremost challenge, however, has been to ensure that they have access to, and usage intensity of, suitable and affordable financial products and services that meet the needs of their livelihoods as well as risks and mitigation strategies. This requires understanding that poor and disadvantaged women and men do not exist in isolation from complex and interdependent functions in the financial system, which includes a number of actors, diversified services, constraints (not just symptoms) and capacities and incentives. Overall, the book provides a rich source of examples of how building inclusive financial systems can empower the world's poor – by increasing income and employment opportunities, securing livelihoods and reducing poverty.

Book excerpt: Fostering the entrepreneurship of women is important for Pakistan's economic growth and inclusion agenda, and access to financial services is an important component of starting and growing a business for women entrepreneurs. The original purpose of Are Pakistan's Women Entrepreneurs Being Served by the Microfinance Sector? was to determine whether women entrepreneurs have access to, and are using, microfinance loans as a source of finance for their businesses. However, the findings of the book go beyond the narrow objective of understanding whether microfinance providers are reaching Pakistan's businesswomen. As the research unfolded, the evidence suggested that not only are women entrepreneurs not being served, but also most of the loans for women clients are actually being used by a male family member-a brother, a son, a husband, a father. Actual numbers are hard to pin down, but an estimated 50 to 70 percent of the loans on the books for women clients are solely used by another household member, while the woman 'borrower' is responsible for attending all the group meetings, all repayments or delinquencies, and all the transactions costs. This book focuses on products, services, policies, and other elements of the business model of microfinance in Pakistan that affect both demand for and access to microfinance by women borrowers, some of whom fall into the narrower category of entrepreneurs. Financial services are important for women who are starting and growing a business, but in Pakistan microfinance providers are not reaching the country's businesswomen. Most loans made to women borrowers are passed on to male relatives, many loan products for women are not suitable for small businesses, and discriminatory practices are pervasive. The information presented in Are Pakistan's Women Entrepreneurs Being Served by the Microfinance Sector? will be useful to development practitioners, entrepreneurs, policy makers, businesswomen, and students of microfinance in Pakistan and around the world.

Book excerpt: In the informal economy of developing countries, female entrepreneurs face a comparative disadvantage for operating high-productivity activities, owing to the prevalence of patriarchal forms of business regulations. Yet, for microfinance institutions (MFIs) to succeed in enhancing female empowerment, increased access to credit must enable female entrepreneurs to tap into the range of high-productivity activities. So when the costs of legality are too high in developing countries, and the informal economy becomes the only affordable venue for operating a business venture, this paper shows that access to microfinance services becomes only necessary, but not sufficient for female empowerment. Based upon a game-theoretic model of activity choices by ex ante homogenous women, we argue that conditioning well-trained women's access to credit to the adoption of high-productivity activities may enable MFIs to induce the emergence of networks of female entrepreneurs large enough to mitigate patriarchal practices that raise the costs of operating such activities in the informal economy.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyse the position of women in the maize and bean value chains in Rwanda, as well as the current and potential role of financial service providers (FSPs) in strengthening the positioning of women in these chains. The study used the women’s economic empowerment framework for the conceptual analysis, while similarly looking at overall financial inclusion indicators. This was all done within the context of a value chain analysis. The value chain concept provided a framework for analysis and explained the different functions in the value chains for bean and for maize, including the roles of men and women. The analysis showed how the available financial services not only reached women but also benefited and empowered them. A desk study, which accompanied the fieldwork and value chain analysis, showed that the enabling environment in Rwanda is very conducive to the promotion of women in agriculture. Government policies support the economic inclusion of women, and clear implementation strategies have been defined. However, women still experience challenges and constraints in terms of access to land and farm inputs, equipment, training, finance and market channels. Strong time constraints also exist due to double burden, as well as limited power in negotiations on decisions between members of their households (known as ‘intra-household bargaining power’). In this case the decisions are on use of resources and income. Furthermore, women still have less access to larger loans for inputs, trading and aggregation.
