Book excerpt: Woman, Thou Too Art Called, is a true story of spiritual dilemma, spiritual encounters, tragic moments, and over twenty years of running away from God to escape answering his call to preach. Women are not readily accepted as preachers by men as well as by some women. If a woman has been taught throughout life that this is not the norm, that this is outside the will of God, then what is she to do when she is being pulled in that direction? Thus, the spiritual dilemma evolves. God hates our disobedience. However, because he is so merciful and so full of grace, he gives us chance after chance after chance to come into obedience and subjection to him. He creates situations and circumstances in our lives to get our attention and to bring us to a place of humility and understanding so that he can use us for his glory. The problem is that we don't always want what God wants for us. Hence, the flesh begins to war against the spirit. Like Jonah, who spent three days in the belly of the fish, God will allow us to run only for so long. But in the end, he will have the last word. His will is always done. Oftentimes, people run from situations and their circumstances because of fear. Fear has the tendency to paralyze us and make us see things in the darkest and most negative way. Jonah ran out of fear. I ran because I didn't want to give up my lifestyle. In my finite mind, I thought I was doing just fine. God had other plans, and although he allowed me to run my course, he made sure that in the end, I knew just who was in charge of my life. God is always in complete control.

Book excerpt: Thomas Middleton (1580-1627) - 'our other Shakespeare' - is the only other Renaissance playwright who created lasting masterpieces of both comedy and tragedy; he also wrote the greatest box-office hit of early modern London (the unique history play A Game at Chess). His range extends beyond these traditional genres to tragicomedies, masques, pageants, pamphlets, epigrams, and Biblical and political commentaries, written alone or in collaboration with Shakespeare, Webster, Dekker, Ford, Heywood, Rowley, and others. Compared by critics to Aristophanes and Ibsen, Racine and Joe Orton, he has influenced writers as diverse as Aphra Behn and T. S. Eliot. Though repeatedly censored in his own time, he has since come to be particularly admired for his representations of the intertwined pursuits of sex, money, power, and God. The Oxford Middleton, prepared by more than sixty scholars from a dozen countries, follows the precedent of The Oxford Shakespeare in being published in two volumes, an innovative but accessible Collected Works and a comprehensive scholarly Companion. Though closely connected, each volume can be used independently of the other. The Collected Works brings together for the first time in a single volume all the works currently attributed to Middleton. It is the first edition of Middleton's works since 1886. The texts are printed in modern spelling and punctuation, with critical introductions and foot-of-the-page commentaries; they are arranged in chronological order, with a special section of Juvenilia. The volume is introduced by essays on Middleton's life and reputation, on early modern London, and on the varied theatres of the English Renaissance. Extensively illustrated, it incorporates much new information on Middleton's life, canon, texts, and contexts. A self-consciously 'federal edition', The Collected Works applies contemporary theories about the nature of literature and the history of the book to editorial practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreamers of the Ghetto (1892) is a collection of stories by Israel Zangwill. Raised in London by parents from Latvia and Poland, Zangwill understood the plight of the city’s Jewish community firsthand. Having risen through poverty to become an educator and author, he dedicated his career to the voiceless, the oppressed, and the needy, advocating for their rights and bearing witness to their suffering in some of the most powerful novels and stories of the Victorian era. “This is a Chronicle of Dreamers, who have arisen in the Ghetto from its establishment in the sixteenth century to its slow breaking-up in our own day. Some have become historic in Jewry, others have penetrated to the ken of the greater world and afforded models to illustrious artists in letters...” As a Jewish immigrant who grew up in poverty in London, Israel Zangwill knows that the condition of life in the ghetto changes not just lives, but mentalities. In the third installment of his Ghetto series, Zangwill imagines the lives of such historical Jewish figures as Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza, German poet Heinrich Heine, and Prussian lawyer and political activist Ferdinand Lasalle. The tales of Jewish life in Dreamers of the Ghetto earned Zangwill comparisons to Dickens upon publication, and helped to establish him as an author with a gift for intensive character study and a passion for political themes. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Israel Zangwill’s Dreamers of the Ghetto is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers.
