Book excerpt: Lilliana Dee provides a palpable feel of home and also a familiar presence of a friend in her piece, Mettle. The beautiful flow that is her life in words puts a harmonious odyssey of experiences on display. From protecting friends to dealing with loss, witness her sorrow and joy transform a wandering girl into a caring woman. I've been writing since before I could write. I'd dictate stories to my listening parents who would act as my scribes but I never thought I would write a book, or publish one, let alone this one. So, here goes nothing...
Book Synopsis Wild Women of Boston by : Dina Vargo
Download or read book Wild Women of Boston written by Dina Vargo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sons of Liberty are celebrated in the rebellious history of Boston--but what of their sisters? An audacious and determined procession of reformers, socialites, criminals and madams made the city what it is today. One hundred years before Rosa Parks, African American abolitionist Sarah Parker Remond refused to give up her seat while attending a play in Boston. Fiery activists Harriet Hemenway and Minna Hall led a boycott against bird plumage in ladies' dress and brought the fashion industry to its knees. Rachel Wall was the last woman to be hanged in Massachusetts after leading a daring life as a robber and pirate. Later, women like Boston Marathon runner Kathrine Switzer also blazed their own trails. Author Dina Vargo unearths the remarkable stories of the wild women of the Hub.
Download or read book Women of Empire written by Verity McInnis and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Rules for Wife Behavior, Colonel Joseph Whistler summed up his expectations for his new bride: “You will remember you are not in command of anything except the cook.” Although their roles were circumscribed, the wives of army officers stationed in British India and the U.S. West commanded considerable influence, as Verity McInnis reveals in this comparative study of two female populations in two global locations. Women of Empire adds a previously unexplored dimension to our understanding of the connections between gender and imperialism in the nineteenth century. McInnis examines the intersections of class, race, and gender to reveal social spaces where female identity and power were both contested and constructed. Officers’ wives often possessed the authority to direct and maintain the social, cultural, and political ambitions of empire. By transferring and adapting white middle-class cultural values and customs to military installations, they created a new social reality—one that restructured traditional boundaries. In both the British and American territorial holdings, McInnis shows, military wives held pivotal roles, creating and controlling the processes that upheld national aims. In so doing, these women feminized formal and informal military practices in ways that strengthened their own status and identities. Despite the differences between rigid British social practices and their less formal American counterparts, military women in India and the U.S. West followed similar trajectories as they designed and maintained their imperial identity. Redefining the officer’s wife as a power holder and an active contributor to national prestige, Women of Empire opens a new, nuanced perspective on the colonial experience—and on the complex nexus of gender, race, and imperial practice.

Download or read book Plays On Women written by David M. Bevington and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the original and authoritative Revels texts, Plays on Women brings together four plays that dramatize the lives of women in Shakespeare’s England. Presenting both domestic tragedy and city comedy, the anthology depicts women as witty tricksters and heart-breaking victims, adulteresses and faithful wives. In each play, the women break out of familiar roles, challenging both theatrical and social convention to offer the pleasures of laughter, pathos and suspense. McLuskie's introduction uses the latest interdisciplinary research to explore the dynamic relationship between women, the theatre and the social world. The annotation unravels the complexities of language and performance that sustain the plays’ stunning theatrical power.
