Book excerpt: Without Sin chronicles the rise and fall of nineteenth-century America's most succesful experiment in Utopian living: New York's Oneida Community (1848-1880). Founded by the charismatic Christian Perfectioniost John Humphrey Noyes, this remarkable society flourished for more than thirty years as a unique world where property was shared, men and women were equals, sex was free and open, work was to be joyous, and pleasure was felt to be "the very business that God set Adam and Eve about."

Book excerpt: As a U.S. Border Patrol Agent and a former Navy Seal, Garrett Harrison is intimately familiar with the notion of duty and the necessity of upholding the law. However, his world is forever changed when he discovers two women brutally murdered and one man clinging to life in the desert wilderness of Otay Mesa. At the same time, Angelina Marguerite, an ill-starred seventeen-year-old prostitute working in a brothel in Tecate, Mexico desperately clings to her faith in God. She hopes for deliverance from the cruel, ambitious drug dealer known as El Cacique who lured her to el norte with the promise of marriage and prosperity, only to force her into prostitution. Meanwhile, the director of a parochial school serving primarily children from migrant families accepts donations from a priest that she suspects molests children. Amidst this corruption and exploitation, Garrett and Angelina fall in love and soon discover that the pursuit of opportunity, liberty and true love comes with a price. DAVID McCABE is the Coordinator of the Teacher Preparation Program at Pasadena City College and has been an educator in Southern California for twenty years where he has worked closely with migrant children and their families. During his career he has had to confront such serious issues as child abuse, drug use and molestation as well as help families gain access to the services they needed while coping with fears surrounding their immigration status. He currently serves as the advisor for Students Beyond Boundaries, a student organization advocating for the rights of all people. David lives with his wife and son on their small ranch in Southern California.

Book excerpt: One of Publishers Weekly's Best Summer Books 2013 "In A Land Without Sin Paula Huston has written a novel that's wise and wry, tragic and tender, and altogether thrilling. Both moved and enthralled, I couldn't stop reading." --Robert Clark Author of In the Deep Midwinter and Love Among the Ruins "Huston treads where few writers dare, jumping fearlessly into the roiling cauldron of factious Central American politics, class, culture, and religions. No doubt it would have been easier to write a mere gloss, a panoramic report describing the horror of war, revolution, grinding poverty, and the inevitable human carnage. However, the lens through which Huston sees penetrates far deeper than a perusal of these surface wounds to examine the limits of family loyalty, faith, and the causes and cure of hatred. A Land Without Sin is a compelling narrative that leaves me both haunted and hungry for more." --Gina Ochsner Author of People I Wanted to Be and The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight "With some of the sheer excitement of H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines and the depth of soulful inquiry of Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory, Paula Huston's A Land Without Sin is a savvy look at the violent struggles in southern Mexico over the last quarter century and a vivid perspective on the hopes and perils of liberation theology. It is a poignant and splendid book." --Ron Hansen Author of Mariette in Ecstasy and Atticus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline and fall of old-time religion is finally a reality in the U.S. According to the Pew Research Center results of May 12, 2015, the number of Americans who dont affiliate with a particular religion has grown to 56 Million. Nones are the 2nd largest faith group in the U.S. There is a new emerging consciousness of Spirituality. It is sometimes described as a search for the sacred. It can also be the substance of ones inner journey in relation to the Source from which all things come. The tired and worn mantra of traditional Protestant evangelical, fundamentalist, and Roman Catholic Christian theology called Sin and Salvation: theology has served the goals of power and control for the Church for centuries. It was a favorite tool of both political and ecclesiastical groups. Other religions also make use of dogma and authoritarian notions like sin and salvation in their efforts to exercise control, and maintain power over human behavior. The Jesus of the Christian religion was not the blood sacrifice of some malicious and sadistic God as portrayed by Mel Gibson in his movie The Passion of the Christ. If you have bought into the regressive and punitive lair of the Sin and Salvation paradigm you are in the clutches of an unhealthy religion. The field of psychology provides you with a positive and healthy means of escape from the mind control, destructive concepts of a failed theology, and a failed and fraudulent psychology of mankind. The new paradigm of healthy religion shatters the shackles of the old-time and present day religious hucksters. This new path and new paradigm will provide you with a breath of fresh air that is long overdue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was not written to combat alcoholism. But the lying preaching of Christian leaders who say that drinking wine, beer, or other alcoholic beverages is a sin. Nothing more liar. Only sick minds can think this way after reading the Bible. The Bible glorifies wine as a blessed drink. The wine represents the blood of Jesus. Wine was the first product of the earth after the new post-flood world. Turning water into wine was Jesus first miracle. But it is not only wine that the Bible blesses. In Old Testament worship oblations were offered to God, which consisted of pouring alcohol on the altar in sacrifice to God. Wine was for Jews, what coffee is for Brazilians, and what sandwich is for Americans. When I see theologians and pastors advocating the compulsory abstinence of alcohol, I only understand by two biases: The supreme ignorance of the Bible, for these people walk with the Bible under their arm, but do not even know what is written in it ... And secondly Instead the intellectual dishonesty that characterizes human beings, who instead of seeking the truth, prefer to defend their ideological positions, using in bad faith, creating versions for facts and truths. As for sin and the severity of alcoholism, I will deal with it in another volume.

This aspect of Christianity is often neglected and most people in the faith just accept it with blindly duty. The doctrine has wide ramifications in our theologies as it makes it evident to us how sin works in our lives and whether it should have any kind of hold on us.

In this revision of a foundational work, John Piper reveals how grace is not only God’s undeserved gift to us in the past, but also God’s power to make good happen for us today, tomorrow, and forever. True life for the follower of Jesus really is a moment-by-moment trust that God is dependable and fulfills his promises. This is living by faith in future grace, which provides God's mercy, provision, and wisdom—everything we need—to accomplish his good plans for us. In Future Grace, chapter by chapter—one for each day of the month—Piper reveals how cherishing the promises of God helps break the power of persistent sin issues like anxiety, despondency, greed, lust, bitterness, impatience, pride, misplaced shame, and more. Ultimate joy, peace, and hope in life and death are found in a confident, continual awareness of the reality of future grace.

Book excerpt: Volume 37 Sermons 2182-2236 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to publish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.
