Book excerpt: Both hydrologists and meteorologists need to speak a common scientific language, and this has given rise to the new scientific discipline of hydrometeorology, which deals with the transfer of water and energy across the land/atmosphere interface. Terrestrial Hydrometeorology is the first graduate-level text with sufficient breadth and depth to be used in hydrology departments to teach relevant aspects of meteorology, and in meteorological departments to teach relevant aspects of hydrology, and to serve as an introductory text to teach the emerging discipline of hydrometeorology. The book will be essential reading for graduate students studying surface water hydrology, meteorology, and hydrometeorology. It can also be used in advanced undergraduate courses, and will be welcomed by academic and professional hydrologists and meteorologists worldwide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939, when this Vintage Words of Wisdom title was first published, only 36 years had elapsed since the Wright brothers had made the first flight in a powered aeroplane. Yet in these few years, as Amy Johnson explains, the world had become a smaller place, shrunk by the achievements of pioneer aviators who established air routes connecting cities and peoples across the globe. Amy Johnson was one of these pioneers of aviation history, achieving remarkable fame for her many record-breaking flights during her short life - she died aged just 37 piloting an aircraft on behalf of the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1941. In May 1930 she became the first woman to fly from Great Britain to Australia and even today her name is recognised although, for many, her achievements are perhaps less familiar. Sky Roads of the World is her autobiography. It provides details of Amy's own flights but is also a rich source of information about the various men, and women, who throughout the 1920s and '30s risked their lives to extend the possibilities of aviation and achieve fame and glory setting records for speed and distance by air. She captures the thrill and anxiety faced by these pilots as they flew, often alone, with few instruments and no ground support. The tales are enhanced by her personal experience and she provides much background colour with her insights into the places and people encountered around the world.Amy and her fellow women pilots also challenged the expectation of the time that aeroplanes and flying were a man's world. For example, in this book Amy Johnson writes of finding a refreshing attitude in the USA where, 'I was in the land of opportunities, a country where a woman is given a job according to her qualifications and not her sex'. She also highlights the prejudice she often encountered throughout her career despite her success and achievements. For anyone interested in the growth of civilian aviation between the two World Wars this book provides much detail on emerging routes, airlines, aircraft and the numerous male and female aviators responsible for their development. Amy Johnson flew to and across many countries and writes of aviation in all continents in a manner that evokes much period charm. Amy Johnson is worthy of her place in the history of aviation and among our British heroes. Sky Roads of the World will introduce her to new readers who will gain a better understanding of Amy, the woman and pilot, and also of an early twentieth-century world experiencing considerable social and technological change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Write Out of the Classroom is a ground-breaking, highly practical book which provides teachers and creative writing tutors with great ways of tapping into the huge inspirational and educational potential of the richly diverse world beyond the classroom walls. Effective learning occurs when the process feels exciting, inspiring and ‘real’, and there is nothing more stimulating and ‘real’ than the real world itself. Working with groups in interesting and evocative settings can generate exceptional participant involvement. Well-led ‘locational brainstorming’ in such places increases vocabulary and produces an astonishing freshness of observation, ideas, language, plot and metaphor. Teachers commonly notice a quantum leap in writing quality arising from these sessions. Based on the author’s extensive experience in developing and leading out-of-classroom ‘intelligent observation’ and writing workshops, this unique book steers educators through the subtleties of guiding thoughtful data collection sessions in varied environments; selecting appropriate and motivational places and forms of writing, and running sessions linked to specific creative and factual writing tasks. The book covers the following areas and techniques and how they relate to out-of-classroom work: planning outings and choosing locations; leading language and ideas brainstorm sessions; descriptive poetry inspired by outdoor settings; ‘reflective haikus’, cinquains, and minimalist poetry; creating stunning plots and storylines; collective story writing; fictitious diary forms; descriptive travel writing; understanding poetry’s mechanics and sound patterns; assisting students with editing. This detailed, practical book also contains examples of remarkable student creative writing produced through these techniques, as well as photocopiable pages which include original examples of specific writing forms to model from, explanatory diagrams, helpful checklists and handy teachers’ ‘crib sheets’. Write out of the Classroom is the perfect ‘insider's guide’ to teaching and inspiring creative writing. It is an essential tool for classroom teachers in both Primary and Secondary schools, creative writing tutors, literacy co-ordinators and PGCE students, as well as leaders in residential centres and forest schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern man, or woman for that matter, from city, town, or farm has little knowledge of the real wilderness. Many hunters, fisherfolk, joggers, backpackers, hikes and adventures know how to handle a prepared path, planned campsite or landscaped trail but the real woods were every thing, and I mean every thing is 'natural' they are lost. They have never seen any food walking around or any plants out of a plastic package. Thus off the planned path they hit the panic button and may needlessly die. A considerable number of people lost in the wilds die every year just because they did not have the basic knowledge to survive. A recent example from the Western states was a group of people perished in the woods with a host of good food all around. They just didn't know what to eat as they had never seen it growing in the ground. Few of today's citizen realize they are never more than a few seconds from trouble as their car rolls to a stop many miles from civilization with a dead engine. Every year many people buy a gun and become hunters. They know they are hunters, they now have a hunting license. The license gives them no knowledge of the woods, but they don't realize this until they get lost on the first trip. Some die. Some get themselves out with just dumb luck and fear to ever return, to the woods again many hours of true fun have been lost forever. This book could have helped save a life or made their trip a fun adventure to be enjoyed again and again. This book is full of basic information and how to for the novice, but the experienced outdoors person will find a wealth of useful information here as well. There are details on many different ways to live in the outdoors with little professional 'equipment' some may be new or a little different to other books on the subject, to build a fire, break in boots, walk, approach game, travel, finding food, water, shelter, how to cook without pots or pans, tell coming weather, what works in many places and what doesn 't. How to make the things you need with only what tools you can devise or may have with you at the time is stressed as is outdoor first aid and confidence. All subjects very different to what you will experience in town or in a formal camping, backpacking or hiking situation. This book is different in that everything here has been tested over and over all over the country to be sure everything will work for the novice as well as the experienced outdoors person. This is not a table top or book shelf book it is a book to put in your pocket and take with you. It may well save a life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The translation of poetry has always fascinated the theorists, as the chances of "replicating" in another language the one-off resonance of music, imagery, and truth values of a poem are vanishingly small. Translation is often envisaged as a matter of mapping over into the target language the surface features or semiotic structures of the source poem. Little wonder, then, that the vast majority of translations fail to be poetry in their own right. These essays focus on the poetically viable translation - the derived poem that, while resonating with the original, really is a poem. They proceed from a writerly perspective, eschewing both the theoretical overkill that spawns mice out of mountains and the ideological misappropriation that uses poetry as a way to push agendas. The emphasis throughout is on process and the poem-to-come.to move forward in theory and practice and opens new paths in land policy research.
