Book excerpt: In his book Cream City Chronicles, Milwaukee historian John Gurda wrote, "What lies buried beneath the trees of Forest Home is the foundation of Milwaukee." In 1849, St. Paul's Episcopal Church purchased 72 acres in Milwaukee to create Forest Home Cemetery, a cemetery for the city and an eternal resting place for all. Increase Lapham was hired to design Forest Home based on the "garden cemetery" model. More than a thousand trees speak to its name. The first burial occurred in August 1850, and the story continues today with 189 acres of a graceful landscape and Victorian-era monuments that are measured in tons. Beneath its majestic trees are buried the city's historic founders and developers, mayors, beer barons, industrialists, pioneering women, and Civil War casualties, whose fascinating stories are brought to life through never-before-seen photographs.

Many Civil War soldiers were interred in this cemetery, and the memorial stones for those soldiers have been included. The earliest birth date found within the cemetery is April 5, 1748, and the earliest burial is 1820. Many times the maiden name of the wife was included on the stones, and some inscriptions also contain the place of birth, place of death, marriage dates, and in one case, the place of marriage, in Germany. Entries include: location of grave, surname, given name(s), maiden name, date and place of birth, date and place of death, inscriptions and comments. Relevant data found elsewhere, such as Civil War service information, has also been included. Not all data appears for each person. This work is complimented with a map of the Wauwatosa Cemetery.

Download or read book Badger Boneyards written by Dennis McCann and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-03-07 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bodies are buried, but the stories are not. From the ornate tombs of Milwaukee beer barons to displaced Chippewa graves and miniscule family plots, Badger Boneyards: The Eternal Rest of the Story unearths the stories of Wisconsin. Football great John Heisman is buried here, as is the state's smallest man, a woman whose tombstone names her murderer, and the boy who would not tell a lie and paid the price. Even in a graveyard, peace proves hard to come by: Wisconsin's Native American tribes have fought for undisturbed grounds and proper burial. A patch of Belgian graves now resides beneath a parking lot while the headstones cluster nearby, and the inhabitants of a Bayfield cemetery were unearthed by a raging flood. Sometimes the dead are recalled with only a first name, and sometimes no name at all. Following the clues in tips from readers, unusual epitaphs, and well-worn stones, Dennis McCann finds the melancholy, the humorous, the tragic, and the universal in Wisconsin's cities of the dead.

Book Synopsis War Monuments, Museums and Library Collections of 20th Century Conflicts by : Steve Rajtar
Download or read book War Monuments, Museums and Library Collections of 20th Century Conflicts written by Steve Rajtar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique state-by-state directory covers monuments, memorials, museums, markers, statues and library collections that relate to the veterans, weapons, vehicles, airplanes, victims or any other aspect of war in which the United States participated. While a site may have been created before 1900 (such as a fort), there must be some operational or historical tie to a twentieth century conflict to be included here. General collections, such as museums of aviation, are included if they house materials related to a twentieth century conflict. The coverage is so thorough that statues honoring veterans of the Civil War appear if veterans of later wars are on their rosters of honorees. Another example of the comprehensiveness of this compilation is in the inclusion of memorials to victims of war such as the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas. For each site, the following information is given: street address, phone number, website and email address (if applicable), days and hours of operation, admission fees, other necessary information, and a brief description of the site.
