Book excerpt: Explore America's Dairyland and the American Spirit At the dawn of World War II, Wisconsin was home to nearly 200,000 dairy farms. Today, barely 6,000 remain. The ghosts of the missing can still be seen in withering old farms along lonely highways, some restored, many abandoned or decayed, but all with a story to tell. Immigrants dreamed of owning their own farms, only to be fleeced by the promotion of cutover lands in the Northwoods. Freedmen and women arrived in southwestern Wisconsin and became farmers and renowned barn-builders in one of the earliest integrated communities in the nation. Through hundreds of hours of site visits, interviews, and research, historian and photographer, Scott Wittman extracts the forgotten truths from legend to tell the real stories of those who created The Dairy State.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of dairying in Wisconsin is the story of how our very landscape and way of life were created. By making cows the center of our farm life and learning how to care for them, our ancestors launched a revolution that changed much more than the way farmers earned their living — it changed us. In Creating Dairyland, journalist, oral historian, and former dairyman Ed Janus opens the pages of the fascinating story of Wisconsin dairy farming. He explores the profound idea that led to the remarkable "big bang" of dairying here a century and a half ago. He helps us understand why there are cows in Wisconsin, how farmers became responsible stewards of our resources, and how cows have paid them back for their efforts. And he introduces us to dairy farmers and cheesemakers of today: men and women who want to tell us why they love what they do. Ed Janus offers a sort of field guide to Dairyland, showing us how to "read" our landscape with fresh eyes, explaining what we see today by describing how and why it came to be. Creating Dairyland pays tribute to the many thousands of Wisconsin farmers who have found a way to stay on their land with their cows. Their remarkable effort of labor, intelligence, and faith is one of the great stories of Wisconsin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migrant workers live in a transnational world that spans the boundaries of nation-states. Yet for undocumented workers, this world is complicated by inflexible immigration policies and the ever-present threat of enforcement. Workers labeled as “illegals” wrestle with restrictive immigration policies, evading border patrol and local police as they risk their lives to achieve economic stability for their families. For this group of workers, whose lives in the U.S. are largely defined by their tenuous legal status, the sacrifices they make to get ahead entail long periods of waiting, extended separation from family, and above all, tremendous uncertainty around a freedom that many of us take for granted—everyday mobility. In Milking in the Shadows, Julie Keller takes an in-depth look at a population of undocumented migrants working in the American dairy industry to understand the components of this labor system. This book offers a framework for understanding the disjuncture between the labor desired by employers and life as an undocumented worker in America today.

Book excerpt: Dairyland tells the story of a little girl (me) growing up in mid-century Wisconsin. I wanted to work on something a little different from my other books, which are more devotional in nature. This past year has been a difficult one for all of us. The gravity of the many national and world crises we face compelled me to work on something to offset the heaviness and intensity that many of us live with every day. So unlike my other books, the purpose of this one is not to offer the reader inspiration. I wanted to have a little fun by writing something lighter that reads more like a story. What better subject to write about than something that I am the most familiar with--I am a subject matter expert on me! My purpose in Dairyland is simply to tell the story of my experience growing up in what is known as "America's Dairyland." Hopefully, it will act as a kind of time machine--taking you back to the mid-century world, whether you lived there or not. It's a place worth exploring. I'm hoping we will find much in common. Perhaps my story will resonate with your experience of growing up. You may recognize some people, places, and experiences because no matter where we are from, we all grew up in a place. For me, that was Dairyland.
