Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern soziale Netzwerke zur Erschaffung virtueller Identitäten führen. Der theoretische Teil der Arbeit basiert hauptsächlich auf Literaturrecherchen. Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage wurde die Methodik der Online-Umfrage gewählt. Bei dieser stellte sich heraus, dass sich viele Mädchen und junge Frauen auf dem sozialen Netzwerk Instagram mit anderen Frauen vergleichen. Dieses Verhalten hat häufig negative Auswirkungen auf das Selbstbild, besonders wenn die Frauen ohnehin bereits unter Unsicherheiten leiden. Die Vergleiche führen häufig dazu, dass sich die Nutzerinnen virtuelle Identitäten aneignen, um in der Masse nicht unterzugehen und um dazuzugehören. Sie erfinden sich im Netz neu und basteln sich ihr "perfektes Ich" zusammen, auch um positive Resonanz von anderen zu bekommen. Ein Interview mit einer ehemaligen Nutzerin zeigt, was für gravierende Folgen dieses Verhalten auf die Mädchen haben kann. Unterscheidet sich ihre virtuelle Identität von ihrer realen Identität zu sehr, geraten diese in innere Konflikte, was oftmals zu psychischen Instabilitäten führen kann. Ein Leben ohne soziale Netzwerke können sich viele Menschen der heutigen Gesellschaft gar nicht mehr vorstellen. Allein in Deutschland lag die Zahl der monatlich aktiven Nutzer im Jahr 2016 bei 45,5 Millionen. Besonders bei Jugendlichen sind die sogenannten Fotosharing- und Kommunikationsplattformen sehr beliebt. Sie wachsen in einer Welt auf, die durch die Medien geprägt ist und müssen lernen mit diesen umzugehen. Seit der Erfindung des Smartphones sind die sozialen Netzwerke ihre ständigen Begleiter, denn nun können sie ihre Benachrichtigungen auf Facebook, Instagram und Co. rund um die Uhr, unabhängig davon, wo sie sich aufhalten, empfangen. Sie müssen sich nicht mehr die Mühe machen sich an einen Schreibtisch zu setzen, den Heimcomputer hochzufahren und sich dann erst in die Portale einzuloggen. Sie sind "Dauer-Online". Gerade in dieser Lebensphase spielt die Entwicklung der eigenen Identität eine große Rolle. "Wer bin ich?" und "Wer möchte ich später sein?" sind Fragen, mit denen man sich besonders in der Jugend anfängt zu beschäftigen und die gleichzeitig schwer zu beantworten sind.

The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change.
