Book excerpt: The ongoing research of a wirelessly networked aperstructure digital phased array (WNADPA) at NPS has investigated the possibility of using a distributed opportunistic array for radar, where array elements are placed at any available area of the ship structure. This could give an array that is as large as the ship itself, with 360 degrees coverage. It has advantages in the areas of survivability and adaptability, and the profile of the ship could be kept low for better maneuverability and smaller radar cross section. The array elements are stand-alone transmit-receive (T/R) modules controlled over a wireless media, with no hardwire connection other than power supply. Phase and time synchronization are critical for the successful operation of the array. The focus of this thesis is on designing a phase synchronization concept, implementing it in existing T/R modules using Commercial of the Shelf (COTS) hardware, and performing validation measurements of the proposed phase synchronization process. The results verify that distribution and phase synchronization of a local oscillator signal over the free space channel are possible.

Book excerpt: The Wirelessly Networked Aperstructure Digital Phased Array Radar (WNADPAR) applies three relatively new concepts: Opportunistic, Aperstructure, and Wirelessly Networked Digital Architecture concepts. Using this approach almost the full length of the ship becomes the aperture of the phased array radar by placing the antenna elements at available open areas and having the power supply as the only wired connection. This thesis research addressed the wireless networking of the full-scale radar system. An analysis of the various existing and newly developed wireless technologies and guided transmission media was conducted to determine a baseline approach for the full system implementation. A two-element array demonstrator was wirelessly networked and tested to allow wireless communication between the central beamformer and controller and the T/R modules. Control and monitoring software was developed in LabVIEW that allows simultaneous transmission and reception in both T/R modules. Finally, a number of tests and measurements were conducted to validate the operation of the two-element array demonstrator while transmitting the control data wirelessly.

Book excerpt: The concept of a wirelessly networked opportunistic digital phased array radar brings about the added advantages of stealth, enhanced survivability, and maximum maneuverability. The array elements are spread over a wide range of locations on the ship s hull and superstructure, and the Local Oscillator (LO) and data/control signals are wirelessly transmitted to and from a central computer processor, which also performs as the digital beamformer. As part of the ongoing research effort, this thesis focused on the hardware and software development of a 2.4 GHz two element array demonstrator. A system analysis of a generic distributed array radar was done and some key parameters pertaining to the Transmit/Receive (T/R) module and an eight-element array radar were calculated. In addition, the research analyzed the radar waveform properties, sampling and data rates, the digital beamformer concept and requirements, and assessed their impacts on the radar performance. Two Transmit/Receive (T/R) modules were built and a two-element array test bench developed using the various National Instruments Compact Reconfigurable Input and Output (cRIO) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) modules. The main software, written in LabVIEW, allowed the test bench to demonstrate the proper functionalities of transmission and reception of the T/R modules. The hardware and software code could be extended easily for an eight-element array radar. Lastly, a number of measurements to characterize the T/R module were done. No significant interference between the modulator and demodulator boards inside of the compact T/R module chassis was observed.

Book excerpt: The wirelessly networked opportunistic digital array radar (WNODAR) system combines opportunistic phased array and aperstructure concepts. The array elements contain stand alone transmit receive (T/R) modules with no hardwire connections other than prime power and are wirelessly networked to a central controller and processor unit. A full scale WNODAR operating in the VHF/UHF frequency bands (300 MHz) exhibits many favorable properties, which make the system suitable for ballistic missile defense (BMD) early warning radar (EWR) applications. In order to validate the WNODAR concepts, demonstration arrays consisting of T/R modules realized using field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology are developed. The demonstration units are frequency scaled from the projected VHF/UHF frequency range to S-band (2.4 GHz) to make use of the abundance of commercial off the shelf (COTS) wireless communication components. This research primarily relates to the development of a demonstration T/R module and the evaluation and characterization of component devices. Design, analysis and simulation of an eight element demonstration array using MATLAB and CST Microwave Studio were conducted to examine expected array beam patterns.

Book excerpt: This thesis is a continuation of the design and development of a three-dimensional 2.4 GHz digital phased array radar antenna. A commercial off- the-shelf quadrature modulator and demodulator were used as phase shifters in the digital transmit and receive arrays. The phase response characteristic of the demodulator was measured and the results show that the phase difference between the received phase and transmit phase is small. In order to increase the bandwidth of the phased array, a method of time-varying phase weights for linear frequency modulated signal was investigated. Using time-varying phase weights on transmit and receive give the best performance, but require the range information of the target. It is more practical to use time-varying phase weights on only one side (transmit or receive but not both), and constant phase weights on the other side. The simulation results showed that by using time- varying phase weights, the matched filter loss is not as severe as it is when using the conventional fixed weights technique. It is also found that this method is only effective for small scan angles when the time-bandwidth product is large. The approach to implement time-varying phase weights on transmit using commercial components such as direct digital synthesizer and quadrature modulator is discussed.

Book excerpt: The Wirelessly Distributed Digital Phased Array (WDDPA) is an ongoing research program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) which has numerous possible applications in radar and communication systems. The WDDPA incorporates many array elements randomly or nonuniformly in the environment or on a platform. Array elements are synchronized and controlled over a wireless channel. Compared to conventional phased array systems, its advantages are adaptability, survivability and flexibility. Phase synchronization is a critical component of the WDDPA development. The common phase reference is vital to steer the beam and control the radiation pattern for the phased array system. The objective of this paper is to improve the WDDPA synchronization operation. Previous hardware and software architectures were replaced or modified to improve the accuracy and speed of the phase synchronization. A series of experiments, first for hardwired channels, then for wireless channels, were conducted successfully to verify the synchronization operation for two elements. Several problems with the circuit were diagnosed and then addressed. The overall performance of the improved synchronization circuit for the demonstration array was satisfactory, allowing phases to be synchronized within 20° wirelessly. The architecture for the potential successor of the synchronization circuit is introduced. It is more flexible and robust than the current circuit and thus more desirable for future applications of the WDDPA.

The benefits of spreading codes as well as joint iterative channel and data estimation are only a few of the radical new features of the book. Also considered are the benefits of turbo and LDPC channel coding, the entire suite of known joint coding and modulation schemes, space-time coding as well as SDM/SDMA MIMOs within the context of various application examples. The book systematically converts the lessons of Shannon's information theory into design principles applicable to practical wireless systems; the depth of discussions increases towards the end of the book. Discusses many state-of-the-art topics important to today's wireless communications engineers. Includes numerous complete system design examples for the industrial practitioner. Offers a detailed portrayal of sphere detection. Based on over twenty years of research into OFDM in the context of various applications, subsequently presenting comprehensive bibliographies.
