Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a detailed analysis of the standards and technologies enabling applications for the wireless Internet of Things The Wireless Internet of Things: A Guide to the Lower Layers presents a practitioner’s perspective toward the Internet of Things (IoT) focusing on over-the-air interfaces used by applications such as home automation, sensor networks, smart grid, and healthcare. The author—a noted expert in the field—examines IoT as a protocol-stack detailing the physical layer of the wireless links, as both a radio and a modem, and the media access control (MAC) that enables communication in congested bands. Focusing on low-power wireless personal area networks (WPANs) the text outlines the physical and MAC layer standards used by ZigBee, Bluetooth LE, Z-Wave, and Thread. The text deconstructs these standards and provides background including relevant communication theory, modulation schemes, and access methods. The author includes a discussion on Wi-Fi and gateways, and explores their role in IoT. He introduces radio topologies used in software-defined radio implementations for the WPANs. The book also discusses channel modelling and link budget analysis for WPANs in IoT. This important text: Introduces IEEE 802.15.4, ITU-T G.9959, and Bluetooth LE as physical layer technology standards enabling wireless IoT Takes a layered approach in order to cultivate an appreciation for the various standards that enable interoperability Provides clarity on wireless standards with particular focus on actual implementation Written for IoT application and platform developers as well as digital signal processing, network, and wireless communication engineers; The Wireless Internet of Things: A Guide to the Lower Layersoffers an inclusive overview of the complex field of wireless IoT, exploring its beneficial applications that are proliferating in a variety of industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the technologies involved in all aspects of a large networking system and how the various devices can interact and communicate with each other. Using a bottom up approach the authors demonstrate how it is feasible, for instance, for a cellular device user to communicate, via the all-purpose TCP/IP protocols, with a wireless notebook computer user, traversing all the way through a base station in a cellular wireless network (e.g., GSM, CDMA), a public switched network (PSTN), the Internet, an intranet, a local area network (LAN), and a wireless LAN access point. The information bits, in travelling through this long path, are processed by numerous disparate communication technologies. The authors also describe the technologies involved in infrastructure less wireless networks.

Book excerpt: This brief proposes that the keys to internet cross-layer optimization are the development of non-standard implicit primal-dual solvers for underlying optimization problems, and design of jointly optimal network protocols as decomposition of such solvers. Relying on this novel design-space oriented approach, the author develops joint TCP congestion control and wireless-link scheduling schemes for wireless applications over Internet with centralized and distributed (multi-hop) wireless links. Different from the existing solutions, the proposed schemes can be asynchronously implemented without message passing among network nodes; thus they are readily deployed with current infrastructure. Moreover, global convergence/stability of the proposed schemes to optimal equilibrium is established using the Lyapunov method in the network fluid model. Simulation results are provided to evaluate the proposed schemes in practical networks.

Book excerpt: 'This textbook is clearly a valuable resource for engineering students or anyone who wants to learn about wireless communication since it provides the technical fundamentals of the key theories and methods used for IoT communication … If you are interested in learning about the technical details of IoT and wireless communication, then this very well-written book, loaded with the fundamentals for understanding this rapidly growing system of the future, is well-worth reading.'IEEE Electrical Insulation MagazineThis textbook metamorphosed from notes that the author has been using to teach at four universities in Australia and New Zealand. The book treats the physical principles and design of wireless Internet of Things (IoT) systems from engineering perspective. IoT enables communication between people, between people and things, and between things. The book highlights the wide scope of sensors used in IoT - including RFIDs, smart mobile phones, home consumer devices, autonomous cars, utility meters, car park meters, robots, satellites, radars and wireless positioning systems. Three features render the book practically accessible. First, each chapter is organised in sections, each of which ends with a set of authentic review questions to motivate reflection. This is complemented by numerous worked examples in each section. Third, the book introduces two popular industry software packages for hands-on practice — MATLAB® and CelPlanner™. With the growing popularity of softwarisation and cloudification, possessing expertise in these packages makes one useful to the industry. Parts of this book are taught in undergraduate curriculum, while the rest is taught in graduate courses. Both traditional and modern topics including C-RAN, network slicing, NFV, NB-IoT and 5G use cases in IoT are covered.Instructor's resources are provided for free to instructors who adopt the book as textbook for a unit/ course/subject/paper. Book excerpt: Beginning with the first event in 2002, the International Conference on Wired/ Wireless Internet Communications (WWIC) has continuously been established as a highly selective conference focusing on integration and co-existence of rapidly dev- oping wireless network technologies and their applications related to the Internet. To do so WWIC provides an international forum for presenting and discussing cutti- edge research in this domain, and the 8th edition of WWIC, held at Luleå University in June 2010, continued this tradition. The WWIC 2010 call for papers attracted 45 submissions from more than 25 countries and each contribution was subject to thorough peer review by recognized int- national experts that acted as members of the Technical Program Committee. The selection process resulted in 16 accepted papers, which were thematically grouped into 5 technical sessions. The major themes of WWIC 2010 were cooperation, management of multimedia traffic, advancing IEEE 802.11, cognitive optimization, mesh and multi-hop networks, security, signaling, control, and wireless sensor networks.
