Book excerpt: From the tiny island nation of Aruba, millions of dollars are wired to accounts belonging to prominent American families. In New York, the stock market is manipulated at will. In the world of high finance and politics, it's well known that big rewards are achieved only by taking big risks. Mike Brennan thought he understood these risks but he has no way of knowing that he's being offered up as the perfect pawn when the authorities get too close to uncovering a shadowy organization that has been in operation for nearly three quarters of a century. Unfortunately for them, there's something about him they don't know. He's not willing to take the fall for them. After being set up as a murderer and an embezzler, Brennan is hunted by the FBI as he races up and down the East Coast against an unknown enemy. Before his struggle is over, there will be many lives lost, many saved, and the face of the country will be changed forever.

Book excerpt: Many of the techniques that drug traffickers and organized crime figures use to launder money are also employed by terrorist groups - as those involved in investigating the attacks of September 11, 2001 soon discovered. These techniques and their perpetrators have grown in number and sophistication, creating an urgent need for investigators to develop strategies that will help keep them one step ahead of the game. Authoritative and accessible, Money Laundering: A Guide for Criminal Investigators, Second Edition is based on the author's extensive experience in law enforcement. It provides a clear understanding of money laundering practices and explains the investigative and legislative processes that are essential in detecting and circumventing this illegal and ultimately dangerous activity. In addition to being an informative and straightforward resource for those investigating complex narcotics cases or other cases in which there is a financial component, this new edition addresses techniques used to track down the money trail of terrorists who are highly motivated, well-trained, organized, disciplined - and well-funded. What's New in the Second Edition: þ Explains money laundering provisions under the U.S. Patriot Act þ Explains how the changes in federal forfeiture law affect existing money laundering law þ Clarifies current legislation and how it affects money laundering investigation þ Outlines the basics as well as the emerging trends of terrorist financing þ Includes two new chapters on the investigation of terrorist activities

Book excerpt: There is fascination and suspicion about the wealthy. Yet there is a dearth of material in which the wealthy speak for themselves about the meaning of their lives. Gospels of Wealth provides such narrative material. This book is a novel venture in social science. It is the first book to have a broad range of wealthy individuals recount their lives in detail, and, importantly, the first to formulate a sociology of wealth that goes beyond conventional, power-elite, Marxist, and status-group theories. The authors begin with an analytical framework for studying the biographical narratives of the wealthy. Next, 12 contemporary Americans directly and vividly recount how financial and spiritual aspects of their lives unfold and invariably intertwine. A concluding section explores rules for interpreting the truth of moral biographies and for undertaking a critical assessment of such narratives. The book's theoretical framework and first-person accounts will appeal to general readers as well as researchers in sociology, American studies, philanthropy, economic life, and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farewell to Prosperity is a provocative, in-depth study of the Liberal and Conservative forces that fought each other to shape American political culture and character during the nation’s most prosperous years. The tome’s central theme is the bitter struggle to fashion post–World War II society between a historic Protestant Ethic that equated free-market economics and money-making with Godliness and a new, secular Liberal temperament that emerged from the twin ordeals of depression and world war to stress social justice and security. Liberal policies and programs after 1945 proved key to the creation of mass affluence while encouraging disadvantaged racial, ethnic, and social groups to seek equal access to power. But liberalism proved a zero-sum game to millions of others who felt their sense of place and self progressively unhinged. Where it did not overturn traditional social relationships and assumptions, liberalism threatened and, in the late sixties and early seventies, fostered new forces of expression at radical odds with the mindset and customs that had previously defined the nation without much question. When the forces of liberalism overreached, the Protestant Ethic and its millions of estranged religious and economic proponents staged a massive comeback under the aegis of Ronald Reagan and a revived Republican Party. The financial hubris, miscalculations, and follies that followed ultimately created a conservative overreach from which the nation is still recovering. Post–World War II America was thus marked by what writer Salman Rushdie labeled in another context “thin-skinned years of rage-defined identity politics.” This “politics” and its meaning form the core of the narrative. Farewell to Prosperity is no partisan screed enlisting recent history to support one side or another. Although absurdity abounds, it knows no home, affecting Conservative and Liberal actors and thinkers alike.
