Book excerpt: "It was 2005, and I was sitting in a large ballroom with over a thousand other music educators in the convention center for the Music Educators National Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when we were told that music education was in crisis. Student enrollment in music classes like band, choir, and orchestra were dropping at an alarming rate nation-wide. Music educators were going to lose their jobs if they could not figure out ways to attract students into their classrooms. The message was clear: we needed to start considering all types of alternatives such as guitar, music technology, Mariachi, blue grass, rock band, song writing, music theory, hand bells-any type of music class that would attract students and save jobs"--

Book excerpt: This volume focuses specifically on narrative inquiry as a means to interrogate research questions in music education, offering music education researchers indispensible information on the use of qualitative research methods, particularly narrative, as appropriate and acceptable means of conducting and reporting research. This anthology of narrative research work in the fields of music and education builds on and supports the work presented in the editors’ first volume in Narrative Inquiry in Music Education: Troubling Certainty (Barrett & Stauffer, 2009, Springer). The first volume provides a context for undertaking narrative inquiry in music education, as well as exemplars of narrative inquiry in music education and commentary from key international voices in the fields of narrative inquiry and music education respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students are drawn to mobile technologies such as iPads and smartphones because of the sheer endless possibilities of the digital worlds they hold. But how can their potential for stimulating the imagination be effectively used in the music classroom to support students' development of musical thinking? Countering voices that see digital technologies as a threat to traditional forms of music making and music education, this collection explores the many ways in which hand-held devices can be used to promote student learning and provides teachers with guidance on making them a vital presence in their own classrooms. Creative Music Making at Your Fingertips features 11 chapters by music education scholars and practitioners that provide tried-and-true strategies for using mobile devices in a variety of contexts, from general music education to ensembles and from K-12 to college classrooms. Drawing on their own experiences with bringing mobile devices and different music apps into the classroom, contributors show how these technologies can be turned into tools for teaching performance, improvisation, and composition. Their practical advice on how pedagogy and mobile technologies can be aligned to increase students' creative engagement with music and help them realize their musical potential makes this book an invaluable resource for music educators who want to be at the forefront of pedagogical transformations made possible by 21st-century technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I acknowledge a deep debt of gratitude to my coeditors: my wife Irene, and my friend and colleague Tom Draper. They have worked with diligence and insight to bring this work to completion. They have delegated the task of writing the Preface to me. As the scientific study of human development matures it is not only natural, but it is necessary to reach beyond understanding the ways humans develop capacities, to study the ways emerging capacities fit into the larger sphere of human undertakings. Music is one of the most significant of those endeavors. As I attend the several piano competitions that are on my agenda each year, and see children seated at the keyboard drawing forth the magnificent sounds of Bach, Chopin, and Ravel, I am always a little awed. Surely, it seems to me, the piano* is among the best of man's creations; the creative energies of great composers are among mankind's greatest expressions; and encouraging children to associate themselves seriously with both instrument and composer can be one of the great blessings to their young lives and, by association, to the larger society. Music touches the entire range of our lifespan on a daily basis. Involving chil dren with music and music training has high market, and common sense, validity. Parents understand intuitively that children will benefit, and their lives will be enriched, if they are influenced by music and music training.
