Book excerpt: In the year 1898 the United States finished the work begun over a century before by the backwoodsman, and drove the Spaniard outright from the western world. This four-volume edition thoroughly explains the historical process of the conquest of the American West. On more than 1000 pages, former president Theodore Roosevelt described how the Americans fought Indian tribes, British, French, and Spanish troops, and how the United States became the sole masters of the West. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After political defeats and the loss of half his capital in a ranching venture in North Dakota, Theodore Roosevelt began writing his ambitious history of the conquest of the American West in 1888. He projected a sweeping drama, well documented and filled with Americans fighting Indian confederacies north and south while dealing with the machinations of the British, French, and Spanish and their sympathizers. Roosevelt wanted to show how backwoodsmen such as Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton, followed by hardy pioneer settlers, gave the United States eventual claim to land west of the Alleghanies. Heroism and treachery among both the whites and the Indians can be seen in his rapidly shifting story of a people on the move. By force and by treaty the new nation was established in the East, and when the explorers and settlers pushed against the Mississippi, everything west of the river was considered part of that nation. This final volume spans the period that saw Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio become states; Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi, territories. The successful campaigns of General Anthony Wayne and others intimidated the Indians into the first peace the border had known in fifty years. The treaties of John Jay and Thomas Pinckney firmed American boundaries and stopped the intrigues of the British and Spanish. As in the other volumes, Roosevelt ties many-sided events into an exciting narrative. He describes in detail the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase.

Many considered this Roosevelt's most important book. Volume II describes the first settlers from the East Coast moving to the land between the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. It specifically describes the adventures of frontiersman Daniel Boone and George Rogers Clark, militia officer during the American Revolutionary War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1790, it was not a given that the young United States, bruised and healing from its struggle for independence and populated by fewer than 4 million inhabitants, would even survive, much less flourish. But the great adventure that came next—the exploration and settlement of the lands lying to the west and stretching to the Pacific Ocean—would build a nation where only a patchwork of eastern seaboard colonies had existed before. The first book in this series, Out Where the West Begins: Profiles, Visions, & Strategies of Early Western Business Leaders, profiled fifty individuals who made significant contributions to the economic development of a young nation. This second volume follows the saga of more than one hundred influential men and women—political and military leaders, religious thinkers, civil rights proponents, suffragettes, African American pioneers, writers and artists, explorers and surveyors, architects, inventors, innovators, medical professionals, and conservationists—who together wove the story of early western frontier America. The engaging account of their lives forms a unique tapestry of human experience. In the words of the author, “Understanding our distinctive past helps us better comprehend who we are now and who we wish to become.”
