Book excerpt: This paper gives the results of some recent investigations of jet-interference effects on actual airplane configurations at transonic speeds. Data presented herein were obtained with hot jets on both wind-tunnel and flight models. Results indicate that jet-induced effects are small at subsonic speeds; however, at low supersonic Mach numbers, these effects are comparable to those obtained at substantially higher Mach numbers.

This new field guide uses all of the plates from Raptors of the World, with a concise, revised text on facing pages, to create a conveniently-sized, lightweight field reference covering all 340 raptor species. Several of the plates have been reworked and repainted for this guide. The book also has an updated colour distribution map for each species. Much of the extensive introductory material has been retained in this guide, with the addition of a complete species list containing all subspecies and brief details of their ranges. Armed with this guide, birders will be able to identify with confidence any raptor encountered anywhere in the world.

Book excerpt: Learn the aircraft design process from a systems-engineering perspective, designed for both aspiring and practicing aerospace engineers Aircraft design incorporates a range of technological areas, including aerodynamics, flight dynamics, propulsion, and structure. Aircraft engineering design therefore requires techniques from systems engineering to integrate the requirements from these disparate areas into a coherent whole. There has never been a greater need for successful aerospace engineers to have a grasp of systems engineering and its applications in the field. Aircraft Design: A Systems Engineering Approach meets this need with a volume which takes the reader from conceptual design to detail design. Offering a systems engineering approach that weighs the needs of different aircraft components holistically, it provides readers with a practical look into the process of aircraft design. Now fully updated to reflect the latest industry developments, it promises to continue as an indispensable tool for modern students in the field. Readers of the second edition of Aircraft Design will also find: Brand new material on structural design, spoiler design, winglets, aircraft modification and modernization, and more Detailed discussion of emerging topics including all-electric aircraft design, VTOL aircraft design, and many others Guidance on the latest FAA requirements with a design impact Aircraft Design is ideal for senior undergraduate and graduate students interested in aircraft design, advanced aircraft design, and air vehicle design. The book may also be of interest to mechanical, industrial, and systems engineers working in the aerospace sector.

This book was released on 1954 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical investigation is presented of the contribution of horizontal tails to the lift and pitching moment due to angle of attack, a constant rate of pitch, and a constant vertical acceleration. Numerical values of the aerodynamic coefficients associated with these motions are presented for a number of two-dimensional wing-tail combinations, a triangular wing-tail combination, and a number of rectangular-wing - triangular-tail combinations.
