Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Control-Surface Characteristics, Vol. 20: Plain and Balanced Flaps on an Naca 0009 Rectangular Semispan Tail Surface The test results indicated that the slope of the lift curve was affected little by the amount of overhang and the balance nose shape but was increased by sealing the gap at the flap nose. At zero angle of attack, the variation of lift with flap deflection for the sealed-gap condition was the same as or slightly greater than for the unsealed-gap condition. The change in the hinge moment coefficient with angle of attack or with flap deflection generally was made more negative with sealing the gap. The effectiveness of the balancing tab in reducing the flap hinge-moment coefficients was approxi mately the same for both the sealed plain flap and the unsealed 35-percent-f1ap - chord elliptical overhang; also, the variation of lift coefficient with tab deflection was about equal for the plain flap and for the flap with aero dynamic balance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Control-Surface Characteristics, Vol. 19: A Double Flap With an Overhang and an Internal Aerodynamic Balance The tests were made in the Naca y 6 foot vertical tunnel (reference 2) modified as discussed in reference 5. The 2-foot-chord by h-foot-span model was made of lami hated mahogany, except for the front flap which was steel. The airfoil conformed to the naca 66-009 airfoil contour forward of the forward-flap hinge axis and to a straight line contour behind this hinge axis. The model was pro vided with a forward flap and a 0.2oc rearward flap. Figure 1 shows the me.hod used to connect the flaps to each other and to the airfoil. He rearward flan was connected to the forward flap by a mechanism that allowed he rearward flap to deflect one, two, or three times as fast as the forward flan; that is, doz/ddl equals either 1, 2, or 5. Mhe forward flap was orovided with three interchangeable blunt-nose overhang balances and three interchangeable internal balances having chords 25, to, and 50 percent of the forward-flan chord. The arrangements tested and pertinent model dimensions are shown in figure 2. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Force-test measurements in two-dimensional flow have been made in the NACA 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel to determine the aerodynamic effects of changing the alignment of the cover plates on a sealed internally balanced flap. An NACA 0015 airfoil was utilized for the tests. The chord of the straight-contour flap was 30 percent of the airfoil chord and the balance with 50 percent of the flap chord.

This book was released on 1945 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NACA is conducting an extensive investigation determine the characteristics of various types of flap arrangement suitable for use as control surface and to provide data for design purpose. The investigation, which made in the Langley 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel, had included test of modifications of flap profile, trailing edge angle, gap size, flap nose shape and balance chord, however most of those tests have been made in two dimensional flow with a flap having a chord 30 percent of the airfoil chord (0.30c). The present tests have extended the investigation of balance chord and flap nose shape, which was reported in reference 1 for a 0.40c flap, to a 0.20c flap. Data on the pressure across the flap nose seal and a method of applying these pressure across the flap nose seal and a method of applying these pressure data in the design of internal balances are presented. Tab data are presented for the plain flap and for a flap with aerodynamic balance.
