Three control systems are developed to ensure the described operation; a specific study regarding the compensation of the triplen harmonics is carried out; Doubly-Fed Induction Generator derating is defined; and an engineering economic analysis is performed to determine the profitability of the proposed operation. The Wind Energy Conversion System performance as generator and Active Filter has been studied for steady-state analysis, fast transients and low transients. It is concluded that the proposed control systems allow operating the Wind Energy Conversion System as power generator and harmonic compensator both during steady state and transient operation; the described operation causes power loss increase and voltage distortion that determine the choice of the component and require system derating.

While it has great potential as an alternative to less environmentally friendly energy sources, there are various technical challenges that cause wind to be considered negatively by many utilities. Wind energy conversion systems suffer from the fact that their real power generation is closely dependent on the local environmental conditions. The Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind turbine with variable-speed variable-pitch control scheme is the most popular wind power generator in the wind power industry. This machine can be operated either in grid connected or standalone mode. In this thesis, a detailed electromechanical model of a DFIG-based wind turbine connected to power grid as well as separately operated wind turbine system with different sub-systems is developed in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and its equivalent generator and turbine control structure is realized. In this regard following configurations have been considered: • DFIG with Battery storage sub-system • DFIG with Buck-Boost converter • DFIG with transformer • DFIG with 3-winding transformer Addition of battery storage and buck-boost converter sub-systems into the system enables not only dispatching of generator power but also decreases the variability in their reactive power requirements. The full control over both active and reactive power is possible by the use of transformer between DFIG and rotor side converter. The steady state behavior of the overall wind turbine system is presented and the steady state reactive power ability of the DFIG is analyzed. It has been shown that major part of the reactive power should be supplied from rotor side converter to reduce the overall rating of the generator. The DFIG with above mentioned sub-systems is connected to grid. The total harmonic distortion analysis and efficiency are carried out. It is found that DFIG with transformer in between machine and rotor side converter has lowest THD (2.29%) and DFIG with 3-winding transformer has maximum efficiency (above 93%).

To augment the transient stability of DFIG, the simulation results for the active and reactive power of conventional controllers are compared with the adaptive tracking, self-tuned feed-forward PI controller model for optimum performance. Conclusive outcomes manifest the superior robustness of the feed-forward PI controller in terms of rising time, settling time, and overshoot value.

Results show that a new improved direct power controller is able to provide very quick transient response for both the active power and the reactive power output from the DFIG wind energy conversion system. Extensive simulations and practical implementation of the algorithms on a digital controller embedded inside a digital signal processor are implemented. The hardware and software of the developed prototype DFIG control mechanism is described in detail in this dissertation. In addition, to study the effect of voltage sag and other types of transient disturbances and faults, a prototype of a fault generator using the same digital signal processor has been implemented. Effect of such disturbances on a transformer is investigated which is the nearest most probable location of a grid fault or disturbance.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, a grid-connected wind-energy converter system including a matrix converter is proposed. The matrix converter, as a power electronic converter, is used to interface the induction generator with the grid and control the wind turbine shaft speed. At a given wind velocity, the mechanical power available from a wind turbine is a function of its shaft speed. Through the matrix converter, the terminal voltage and frequency of the induction generator is controlled, based on a constant V/f strategy, to adjust the turbine shaft speed and accordingly, control the active power injected into the grid to track maximum power for all wind velocities. The power factor at the interface with the grid is also controlled by the matrix converter to either ensure purely active power injection into the grid for optimal utilization of the installed wind turbine capacity or assist in regulation of voltage at the point of connection. Furthermore, the reactive power requirements of the induction generator are satisfied by the matrix converter to avoid use of self-excitation capacitors. The thesis addresses two dynamic models: a comprehensive dynamic model for a matrix converter and an overall dynamical model for the proposed wind turbine system. The developed matrix converter dynamic model is valid for both steady-state and transient analyses, and includes all required functions, i.e., control of the output voltage, output frequency, and input displacement power factor. The model is in the qdo reference frame for the matrix converter input and output voltage and current fundamental components. The validity of this model is confirmed by comparing the results obtained from the developed model and a simplified fundamental-frequency equivalent circuit-based model. In developing the overall dynamic model of the proposed wind turbine system, individual models of the mechanical aerodynamic conversion, drive train, matrix converter, and squirrel-cage induction generator are developed and combined to enable steady-state and transient simulations of the overall system. In addition, the constraint constant V/f strategy is included in the final dynamic model. The model is intended to be useful for controller design purposes. The dynamic behavior of the model is investigated by simulating the response of the overall model to step changes in selected input variables. Moreover, a linearized model of the system is developed at a typical operating point, and stability, controllability, and observability of the system are investigated. Two control design methods are adopted for the design of the closed-loop controller: a state-feedback controller and an output feedback controller. The state-feedback controller is designed based on the Linear Quadratic method. An observer block is used to estimate the states in the state-feedback controller. Two other controllers based on transfer-function techniques and output feedback are developed for the wind turbine system. Finally, a maximum power point tracking method, referred to as mechanical speed-sensorless power signal feedback, is developed for the wind turbine system under study to control the matrix converter control variables in order to capture the maximum wind energy without measuring the wind velocity or the turbine shaft speed.

Book excerpt: Although wind power as a renewable energy is assumed to be an all-round advantageous source of energy, its intermittent nature can cause difficulties, especially in the islanding mode of operation. Conventional synchronous generators can help to compensate for wind fluctuations, but the slow behavior of such systems may result in stability concerns. In this study, the virtual inertia method, which imitates the kinetic inertia of a synchronous generator, is used to improve the system's dynamic behavior. Since the proposed method incorporates no long-term power regulation, it requires no mass storage device and is thus economical. To preclude additional costs, a rotating mass connected to the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) shaft or a super-capacitor connected to the DC-link on a back-to-back converter of a wind power generator could be used. The concept and the proposed control methods are discussed in detail, and eigen-value analysis is used to study how the proposed method improves system stability. As well, the advantages and disadvantages of using DFIG rotating mass or a super-capacitor as the virtual inertia source are compared. The proposed approach also shows that while virtual inertia is not incorporated directly in long-term frequency and power regulation, it may indirectly enhance the system's steady-state behavior. A time domain simulation is used to verify the results of the analytical studies.
