It explores decorating's long and honored past, then shows how this craft, mastered and perfected, can become as art form. The Wilton Way Volume 2, starts with an exploration of imaginative American techniques that open new horizons to decorators. The special love American decorators have for flowers is the subject of two chapters. The first is devoted to the fifty flowers of the fifty states-many never before achieved in icing. The second is given to the rose-best loved flower of every decorator in the world. 23 varieties and how to pipe them are shown. Wild roses, tea roses, "old" roses, even reproductions of roses that grew in Marie Antoinette's garden. Each is displayed on a beautiful cake.

Book excerpt: Wilton was incorporated in 1803, when it was a mostly self-sufficient agricultural community. Manufacturing was the backbone of town even before it was fully incorporated and would continue to be until the late 20th century. Early industrial success can be attributed to Wilson Stream, which provided waterpower for Wiltons mills. The names of Bass, Butterfield, Furnel, Walker, Robbins, and Goodspeed would become well known in Wilton as early entrepreneurs. George Henry Bass entered the shoe manufacturing business in 1876 and started his first shoe shop in 1879. G.H. Bass & Co. went on to become a major employer in the area and a nationally known company. The early 1900s was a time of great progress for the town in which the Wilton Academy was accredited, the town library was acquired, and the Wilton Woolen Mill was established. Several businesses also emerged on Main Street, including the Cony Miller Grocery Store, Mrs. Magraths Millinery, Holmans Drug Store, and Stockfords Drug Store. Today, the essence of Wilton is still reflected in its official motto, A great place to live, work & play.

Book excerpt: Throughout history, people of Wilton-Native Americans; early settlers of the hamlets of Wiltonville, Stiles Corner, and Gurn Spring; and current residents-all have shared a common love of this eastern New York State place, located just north of Saratoga Springs. Wilton captures the high points of the town's history, including the Battle of Wilton in February 1693, and Mount McGregor, famous for its grand hotel built in 1884 and for a cottage where, in 1885, President Ulysses S. Grant finished his memoirs shortly before his death. It also features the mineral spring water that was bottled and marketed in the early 1900s, and a farm with forty thousand turkeys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seminoles once roamed the land that encompasses Wilton Manors, until Henry Flagler brought his East Coast Railway through the untamed wilderness in the late nineteenth century. By 1910, the railway had transformed the area into a viable farming and shipping hamlet known as Colohatchee, until a wealthy businessman began marketing the plot of land nestled between the North and South branches of the Middle River as a beautiful bedroom suburb of Fort Lauderdale. The 1926 housing market crash in south Florida, paired with a devastating hurricane brought an end to this dream one that wouldn't be revived until after WWII. Join local author Ben Little and the Wilton Manors Historical Society as they chronicle the history of this incredible town, from its humble roots to the thriving urban community it is today.

Book excerpt: Whether the residents planned just to spend winters in Wilton Manors or the rest of their lives, it was no matter to E.J. "Ned" Willingham, a Georgian with a grandiose plan for the piny scrublands just outside the growing city of Fort Lauderdale. Willingham was rare among land speculators during the "Florida Frenzy"--a scrupulously honest man. He named this development, his favorite, Wilton Manors. Willingham envisioned a graceful community of modest homes on large yards, with schools, a hotel, and small parks dotting the exclusive, whites-only enclave. Almost 80 years later, Willingham's little community lives on, but not in the fashion he might have expected. His all-white community has grown and matured into a pleasantly diverse and uncommonly tolerant place with lovely homes, outstanding city services, and an eye on preserving its genteel history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over the past one hundred years, postcards have served as an invaluable resource for people to commemorate a place and communicate its importance to friends and family at the other end of the mailbox. Wilton, Connecticut, like so many other cities and small towns across the country, has enjoyed being the subject for a variety of pictures, which serve as a wonderful treasure for remembering lost landscapes and historic buildings, homes, and other structures that have been sacrificed to "progress" and development. Wilton gives the reader an opportunity to observe another world, to look into the very eyes of today's ancestors and see their struggles, their successes, their pains, and their passions.
