Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Holton provides a unified account of intention, choice, weakness of will, strength of will, temptation, addiction, and freedom of the will. Drawing on recent psychological research, he argues that, rather than being the pinnacle of rationality, the central components of the will are there to compensate for our inability to make or maintain sound judgments. Choice is understood as the capacity to form intentions even in the absence of judgments of what action is best. Weakness of will is understood as the failure to maintain an intention, or more specifically, a resolution, in the face of temptation—where temptation typically involves a shift in judgment as to what is best, or in the case of addiction, a disconnection between what is judged best and what is desired. Strength of will is the corresponding ability to maintain a resolution, an ability that requires the employment of a particular faculty or skill. Finally, the experience of freedom of the will is traced to the experiences of forming intentions, and of maintaining resolutions, both of which require effortful activity from the agent.

Book excerpt: Discover how yielding ourselves wholly to God, especially in the midst of challenging circumstances, lends new purpose to our lives. “Vivian Mabuni is a kind and trustworthy guide through one of adulthood’s secrets: life doesn’t go like you thought it would.”—Jen Hatmaker, New York Times best-selling author of For the Love and Of Mess and Moxie As women after God’s heart, we honestly desire to please God. We want to be used by Him and to experience the peace and fulfillment He wants for us. Yet it’s all too easy to fall into living mechanically, with a rule-based approach to the Christian life, or to focus on getting what we want when we want it. Even when we want to be willing, saying yes to whatever God asks often feels scary, and the distractions of this world get in the way. Vivian Mabuni knows this all too well, but she’s discovered that open-handed living starts with an intentional posture of the heart. Through surrender to His will, we draw closer to God in a way that makes our day-to-day lives more purposeful, powerful, and pleasing to Him. With Vivian’s warm encouragement in Open Hands, Willing Heart, you’ll learn how to step out in courageous trust as you invite God to give and take—and move and work—in your life as He sees fit. Along the way you’ll discover true joy and serenity that will carry you through every circumstance.

Book excerpt: It has long been a favourite tenet of mine, and there are now, I think, others who hold it, that Insanity is no exception to the rule which requires a knowledge of the normal as an indispensable preliminary to a knowledge of the abnormal. The reason why the contrary opinion has been maintained with such vigour, and the contrary practice so generally followed, has seemed to me to be the absence of any work in which normal psychological processes are dealt with from the point of view and for the purposes of the alienist. Of the many excellent works on Psychology which are at the service of the student, there is none that affords him material help in understanding the nature of those disorders of mind which it is the work of his life to study. For instance, the chief labours of the student of the disordered mind are concerned with the existence and nature of Delusion; but, as far as I know, no work on normal psychology gives him any help in settling the preliminary questions of what a delusion is; of how it differs from a normal state of mind; of its mode of origin; or of its varieties. It is true that these are not questions in normal psychology, and it is no reproach to the psychologist who deals with the normal alone that they are excluded from his purview; but it is a great disadvantage to the alienist to be left without guidance in the face of problems of such profound importance to him.

Book excerpt: Why do people in some societies tend to follow rules and obey the laws more than those in other societies? Is the difference institutional, or is 'culture' a better explanation? These are the central questions confronted in this book. This study explores these questions through a large laboratory experimental study which examined tax compliance behaviour in four countries: Sweden, Italy, Britain and the United States. We present what we call a 'Reasonable Choice Approach' demonstrating that most people are motivated to comply with social rules when the rules are clear, coherent, and consistent. This theory argues that most people are both rationally self-interested and social animals who have strong desires to behave according to the norms of their societies. Willing to Pay? demonstrates how institutions can shape individual behaviours and thereby help explain why social behaviours are so different across societies.

Book excerpt: What is the role of the will in believing the good news of the gospel? Why is there so much controversy over free will throughout church history? R. C. Sproul finds that Christians have often been influenced by pagan views of the human will that deny the effects of Adam's fall. In Willing to Believe, Sproul traces the free-will controversy from its formal beginning in the fifth century, with the writings of Augustine and Pelagius, to the present. Readers will gain understanding into the nuances separating the views of Protestants and Catholics, Calvinists and Arminians, and Reformed and Dispensationalists. This book, like Sproul's Faith Alone, is a major work on an essential evangelical tenet.

This book was released on 2014-03-07 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, the market for organic food products in Germany has grown steadily, as consumers become increasingly aware of credence characteristics of food products. The primary goal of this study is to integrate psychometric data into a choice experiment to examine preference heterogeneity among consumers and their willingness-to-pay for organic products. In particular, the role of trust and gender are considered in analysing both preferences and willingness-to-pay for organic products. The results of the mixed logit models reveal significant heterogeneity in preferences among consumers for the products examined. The second focus of this study is the effect of starting point bias on the willingness-to-pay estimates obtained. The use of different prices in the first choice set results in different distributions of choices and significantly different preferences and willingness-to-pay estimates in two otherwise identical choice set designs. The results of the latent class models indicate that consumers’ trust perceptions tend to significantly influence their preferences for organic food products. The findings of this study indicate that some consumer groups are willing to pay high price premiums for specific organic food products and, to some extent, for locally produced food. As there is consumer segmentation based on varying levels of trust and due to the heterogeneous preferences of the consumers, organic food marketing should increase its use of suitable communication strategies concerning quality attributes.

Book excerpt: This book presents the findings of an in-depth qualitative longitudinal investigation into the willingness to communicate (WTC) of individuals who, through varying migration channels, left one cultural/linguistic context to make a new life in another. It examines communication behaviours and language choice in multilingual community contexts and emphasises how even the most trivial of communication events are embedded in histories of previous communication and are influenced by emotions connected with a person’s overall life situation. The book fills a gap in contemporary WTC research by examining how WTC operates in multilingual community contexts. Through the use of a complexity lens and the presentation of a revised 3D pyramid model, the authors demonstrate the dynamic nature of WTC and shed new light on processes that affect communication, migration and well-being. This book will be of interest to researchers seeking to explore individual differences using context sensitive and temporally focused designs.

Book excerpt: It is widely known that food markets have a high environmental impact, which needs to be minimized in order to help mitigate climate change. Governments and international institutions can help improve the sustainability of global food production; however, consumers’ decisions have an important role in influencing food market stakeholders’ choices towards sustainable food sources and low-emission practices. Understanding consumers' awareness of the importance of choosing sustainable diets and their capability to adapt their individual decision-making, is pivotal to stimulating or improving consumers’ willingness to move towards choosing climate-friendly food and avoiding food waste. There are many factors that influence people’s food choices from cultural and ethical acceptability, visual attractiveness, taste agreeability, and economic affordability, which change depending on the geographical areas and targeted group of people. Thus, to orient consumers’ food choices many challenges need to be considered, including making consumers aware of organic food health and environmental benefits, nutritional high protein alternatives to meat, and offering affordable solutions. The aim of this Research Topic is to collect different perspectives on consumers’ food choices in relation to the environmental sustainability issue. This would support the decision-makers and food systems stakeholders to move towards sustainable food production. Thus, this collection wishes to highlight the consumers’ point of view on the trade-off between personal habits and food preferences, and climate-friendly choices in geographical areas, including the awareness of the impact that the diet choice may have on the environment. This collection welcomes submissions on the following themes, but are not limited to: • Consumers' perception of the diet’s impact on climate change issue • Consumers' food choice drivers • Cultural acceptability of alternative protein sources • Consumers’ willingness to purchase organic food • Trade-off availability between sustainable and affordable food choice
