Download or read book William Sterndale Bennett written by Rosemary Williamson and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Sterndale Bennett (1816-75) was the leading English composer of the mid-nineteenth century. His music was highly regarded by Mendelssohn and Schumann, and was at one time widely played in Germany. The book presents a record of Bennett's total achievement for the first time and is aimed at both the general reader and the scholar. Each entry in the catalogue begins with a summary of the work's history, followed by detailed descriptions of all the authentic manuscript and printed sources with their locations, a list of important performances, references to the work in the composer's mostly unpublished diaries and correspondence, and a bibliography. An introduction sets the sources in their historical context, and there are appendices on Bennett's notebooks, the paper used in the autographs, the plate numbers in the printed music, and chronological and generic lists of all the works.

Book excerpt: This classic work of hymnody from 1863 draws together a rich selection of German chorales with their tunes, translated by Catherine Winkworth, and edited by William Sterndale Bennett and Otto Goldschmidt. They were arranged for use in the Church of England, and grouped into subjects such The Church and its Seasons and Services, aspects of Christian Life and Special Occasions. Although some of the contents are still in common use today, it is primarily a rich sourcebook for many beautiful forgotten hymns of the Lutheran tradition. This handsome new edition from Benediction Classics uses high-quality scans for the music only, all the text has been carefully typeset using a modern font for ease of reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Jeremy Dibble has written a book which adds substantially to Stanford's reputation and which greatly enriches both British and Irish musical scholarship. It is brilliantly done.' -Irish TimesJeremy Dibble presents the first authoritative, comprehensive study of the life and works of Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924), one of the most gifted and influential composers. Dibble reveals how, although perhaps best known for his church music, Stanford was also an eminent symphonist, songwriter, and author of many fine choral works. Cosmopolitan, ambitious, and pragmatic, he was untiring in his efforts to advance the cause of British music during its renaissance at the end of the nineteenth century, promoting the music of his contemporaries, and the many pupils he taught at Cambridge and the Royal College of Music, including Vaughan Williams, Ireland, Howells, Bliss, Holst, and Gurney.

Book Synopsis The Piano in Nineteenth-century British Culture by : Therese Marie Ellsworth
Download or read book The Piano in Nineteenth-century British Culture written by Therese Marie Ellsworth and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of The London Pianoforte School (ed. Nicholas Temperley) twenty years ago, launched a proliferation of research on music for the piano during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It also expanded research into the developments of musical life in London--for a time the centre of piano manufacturing, publishing and performance. However, nothing has focused on the piano exclusively within Britain. The eleven chapters in this volume explore major issues surrounding the instrument, its performers and music within an expanded geographical context created by the spread of the instrument and the growth of concert touring.

Download or read book Europe, Empire, and Spectacle in Nineteenth-century British Music written by Rachel Cowgill and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. Book excerpt: This volume illuminates musical connections between Britain and the continent of Europe, and Britain and its Empire. The seldom-recognized vitality of musical theatre and other kinds of spectacle in Britain itself, and also the flourishing concert life of the period, indicates a means of defining tradition and identity within nineteenth-century British musical culture. The volume benefits not only from new archival research, but also from fresh musicological approaches and interdisciplinary methods that recognize the integral role of music within a wider culture.

Book Synopsis Verdi in Victorian London by : Massimo Zicari
Download or read book Verdi in Victorian London written by Massimo Zicari and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now a byword for beauty, Verdi’s operas were far from universally acclaimed when they reached London in the second half of the nineteenth century. Why did some critics react so harshly? Who were they and what biases and prejudices animated them? When did their antagonistic attitude change? And why did opera managers continue to produce Verdi’s operas, in spite of their alleged worthlessness? Massimo Zicari’s Verdi in Victorian London reconstructs the reception of Verdi’s operas in London from 1844, when a first critical account was published in the pages of The Athenaeum, to 1901, when Verdi’s death received extensive tribute in The Musical Times. In the 1840s, certain London journalists were positively hostile towards the most talked-about representative of Italian opera, only to change their tune in the years to come. The supercilious critic of The Athenaeum, Henry Fothergill Chorley, declared that Verdi’s melodies were worn, hackneyed and meaningless, his harmonies and progressions crude, his orchestration noisy. The scribes of The Times, The Musical World, The Illustrated London News, and The Musical Times all contributed to the critical hubbub. Yet by the 1850s, Victorian critics, however grudging, could neither deny nor ignore the popularity of Verdi’s operas. Over the final three decades of the nineteenth century, moreover, London’s musical milieu underwent changes of great magnitude, shifting the manner in which Verdi was conceptualized and making room for the powerful influence of Wagner. Nostalgic commentators began to lament the sad state of the Land of Song, referring to the now departed "palmy days of Italian opera." Zicari charts this entire cultural constellation. Verdi in Victorian London is required reading for both academics and opera aficionados. Music specialists will value a historical reconstruction that stems from a large body of first-hand source material, while Verdi lovers and Italian opera addicts will enjoy vivid analysis free from technical jargon. For students, scholars and plain readers alike, this book is an illuminating addition to the study of music reception.
