Book Synopsis Geology for Engineers and Environmental Scientists by : Alan E. Kehew
Download or read book Geology for Engineers and Environmental Scientists written by Alan E. Kehew and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of Geology for Engineers and Environmental Scientists provides students with a basic foundation in the principles of geology, along with an illustration of how engineers must design and build their projects with natural geologic materials and protect them from potentially hazardous geologic processes. Kehew introduces engineering topics including soil and rock mechanics with a quantitative approach that will give students a head start in more advanced engineering courses. The book is prefaced with a discussion of engineering and environmental challenges that our society must face in the current century, such as population growth, scarcity of water and mineral resources, transition to renewable energy, and effects of climate change. Numerous examples of engineering and environmental applications ranging from short descriptions to extensive case histories, such as the “Big Dig” in Boston to the effects of Hurricane Katrina and reconstruction afterward, are included in every chapter. A full chapter is devoted to subsurface contamination and cleanup technologies. For the first time, a large color insert will highlight geological features in the field.

Book Synopsis Geoheritage and Geotourism by : Thomas A. Hose
Download or read book Geoheritage and Geotourism written by Thomas A. Hose and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2016 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on aspects of the natural world, its heritage, and how best to preserve it. Europe's engagement from the late sixteenth century onwards in scientific Earth science inquiry has generated numerous and varied collections of minerals, rocks, and fossils, together with their associated archives, artworks and publications, forming a rich cultural geoheritage held in major private and especially royal and aristocratic collections, museums, universities, archives and libraries. The mines, quarries, geological structures, landforms, minerals, rocks and fossils - or geodiversity - that underpin these collections populate past and present-day Earth science literature. However, for too long their scientific, historic and cultural significance was not universally recognised and generally they were not accorded adequate resources and protection - or geoconservation. Hence, geotourism was developed in the 1990s to raise public awareness of Europe's geoheritage and geodiversity and to promote itsgeoconservation; the volume's theoretical essays and case studies examine these four core geoelements and provide a timely introduction for anyone interested in natural history museums, countryside management, and landscape-basedtourism. Dr Thomas A. Hose is an Honorary Research Associate in the School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol. He has pioneered the recognition of and research into geotourism, and is the author of the world's first doctoral thesis on the subject. Contributors: Kevin Crawford, Peter Davis, John E. Gordon. Download or read book The Gifts of Athena written by Joel Mokyr and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-14 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of technological and scientific knowledge in the past two centuries has been the overriding dynamic element in the economic and social history of the world. Its result is now often called the knowledge economy. But what are the historical origins of this revolution and what have been its mechanisms? In The Gifts of Athena, Joel Mokyr constructs an original framework to analyze the concept of "useful" knowledge. He argues that the growth explosion in the modern West in the past two centuries was driven not just by the appearance of new technological ideas but also by the improved access to these ideas in society at large--as made possible by social networks comprising universities, publishers, professional sciences, and kindred institutions. Through a wealth of historical evidence set in clear and lively prose, he shows that changes in the intellectual and social environment and the institutional background in which knowledge was generated and disseminated brought about the Industrial Revolution, followed by sustained economic growth and continuing technological change. Mokyr draws a link between intellectual forces such as the European enlightenment and subsequent economic changes of the nineteenth century, and follows their development into the twentieth century. He further explores some of the key implications of the knowledge revolution. Among these is the rise and fall of the "factory system" as an organizing principle of modern economic organization. He analyzes the impact of this revolution on information technology and communications as well as on the public's state of health and the structure of households. By examining the social and political roots of resistance to new knowledge, Mokyr also links growth in knowledge to political economy and connects the economic history of technology to the New Institutional Economics. The Gifts of Athena provides crucial insights into a matter of fundamental concern to a range of disciplines including economics, economic history, political economy, the history of technology, and the history of science.
