Book excerpt: Excerpt from Will Shakespeare's Little Lad There was an air of alertness about the little town of Stratford-on-Avon that May morning in the year of grace 1596, and the thirty-eighth of the reign of good Queen Bess, though usually at such an early hour it was taking its last delicious doze, utterly unmindful of the world and its manifold duties. But who could really sleep the first of May, even if the sun had not yet risen? Not the old people, surely, whose slumbers are light enough at any time and who, with all the mysterious noises of the previous night sounding in their ears, lived over again in a half-drowsy state the days when they, too, went a-Maying. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare the Boy: With Sketches of the Home and School Life, the Games and Sports, the Manners, Customs and Folk-Lore of the Time Two years ago, at the request of the editors of the Yout/z's Companion, I wrote for that periodical a series Of four familiar articles on the boyhood of Shakespeare. It was understood at the time that I might afterwards ex pand them into a book, and this plan is carried out in the present volume. The papers have been carefully revised and enlarged to thrice their original compass, and a new fifth chapter has been added. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging and ambitiously conceived Research Companion, contributors explore Shakespeare’s relationship to the classic in two broad senses. The essays analyze Shakespeare’s specific debts to classical works and weigh his classicism’s likeness and unlikeness to that of others in his time; they also evaluate the effects of that classical influence to assess the extent to which it is connected with whatever qualities still make Shakespeare, himself, a classic (arguably the classic) of modern world literature and drama. The first sense of the classic which the volume addresses is the classical culture of Latin and Greek reading, translation, and imitation. Education in the canon of pagan classics bound Shakespeare together with other writers in what was the dominant tradition of English and European poetry and drama, up through the nineteenth and even well into the twentieth century. Second—and no less central—is the idea of classics as such, that of books whose perceived value, exceeding that of most in their era, justifies their protection against historical and cultural change. The volume’s organizing insight is that as Shakespeare was made a classic in this second, antiquarian sense, his work’s reception has more and more come to resemble that of classics in the first sense—of ancient texts subject to labored critical study by masses of professional interpreters who are needed to mediate their meaning, simply because of the texts’ growing remoteness from ordinary life, language, and consciousness. The volume presents overviews and argumentative essays about the presence of Latin and Greek literature in Shakespeare’s writing. They coexist in the volume with thought pieces on the uses of the classical as a historical and pedagogical category, and with practical essays on the place of ancient classics in today’s Shakespearean classrooms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Tales From Shakespeare A long, long time ago, when Fairies, Sprites, and Witches dwelt in the forests, there lived a tiny Fairy King whose name was Oberon, and though a wee mite, he felt very large, and would strut around in a most amusing manner. His Queen Titania was a beautiful fairy, and for so small a body she carried herself with great grace and dignity. Now, we find that fairies sometimes quarrel and do naughty things, just as do little girls and boys and even grown-ups at times. Fairy King Oberon and Queen Titania Often quarreled because Titania refused to give a little boy (whom she had reared) to King Oberon for a page.
