Book excerpt: Empty or abandoned? A dream incarnate or a nightmare in stone? For a young lottery winner with Tourette's, Wildspur Manor is a fantasy fulfilled when he moves in and begins planning renovation work. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to be alone, a problem he decides to meet head on with the aid of technology and alcohol. Obsession soon takes a bear hold, not only regarding the house but also a young woman from its past whose life was tragically short. This will lead him down a dangerous path, and ultimately to a possibilty so fantastical that he is sure he must be dreaming... This mystery/fantasy is ultimately a tale of obsession with the past and of one man's desire to experience a time forgotten. With romantic and supernatural overtones, complete at 166,000 words and lightly laced with humour, it should appeal to most audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in Great Britain in 1890 by the Walter Scott Company, Mysteries and Adventures collected together seven of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's earliest fictional works. Three years later, two international editions were issued and these featured five additional stories. Conan Doyle was not to profit from any of these ventures as, in order to have the stories carried by popular journals of the day, he had signed over all rights to their owners. Prior to their appearance in book form, several had been printed without credit and were not commonly known to be the work of Conan Doyle. The narratives in Mysteries and Adventures dance confidently across the genres, touching upon colonial life, political upheaval, the supernatural, romance and the furrow he would later plough to great acclaim, crime. These twelve entertaining tales plot Doyle's development from budding young writer to the great author that he quickly became.

Book excerpt: Only the cream of the crop get into ultra-prestigious Modern University, and students are virtually guaranteed powerful and high-paid positions upon graduation. Drinking and sex are allowed, and even encouraged, and everything students need - classrooms, restaurants, shopping, and bars - is self-contained inside the school's fifty-story high-rise tower. But there's a catch. Once you start, you can't drop out or transfer to another school. And behind its glossy exterior, Modern has a terrible secret, a macabre and horrible way of ensuring its students perform to the best of their ability. When one young student, Gary Fort, witnesses the unspeakable truth of the school's "Self-Discipline Plan," he decides to fight back, and the suspense builds until the book's chilling conclusion ... Equal parts campus novel, satire on modern education, and gripping horror story, No Transfer (1967) earned rave reviews from the nation's leading critics. This reprint, the first in half a century, includes a new afterword by the author, who wrote it at age 20 while a student at Michigan State University. "A remarkable first novel . . . shockingly convincing." - The New York Times "Walton is called by his publishers 'a genuine voice of his time' and they claim this novel is already being compared to Lord of the Flies and The Lottery. I don't doubt it a bit." - Arizona Republic "An academic shocker with quite a hook; one reads it in a state of frozen uneasiness. This is a contemporary chiller of and for our time, or just beyond - the achievement tests of 1984?" - Kirkus Reviews "A low-key horror story that satirizes present-day big-university education. This chilling story builds to a strong climax." - Publishers Weekly "Wanta take a 'trip' without LSD? Step right this way, baby . . . To say that this book is a shocker is to low rate it." - American Statesman "Just a note. While reading this one keep in mind that it's fiction." - Boston Globe "Chilling and subtle . . . completely unexpected . . . A half-mad world of the young with an Orwellian flavor and an aura of believability." - Sacramento Bee

Download or read book Lysistrata written by Aristophanes and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Classic Available Again Aristophanes was the greatest writer of ancient Athenian "old comedy," known for its satires of contemporary life and for its broad, often obscene humor. "Lysistrata" was first produced in 411 BC, when the Peloponnesian War had been devastating Greece for 20 years. Most people know the plot: Lysistrata assembles women from all of Greece, and they agree that they will not have sex until the men make peace. Aubrey Beardsley was the greatest and the most controversial Art Nouveau illustrator in England, famous for his illustrations of Mallory's "Morte d'Arthur," Oscar Wilde's "Salome," Pope's "The Rape of the Lock," and for several magazines. Because he was associated with Oscar Wilde, Beardsley lost his job as art editor of a magazine named "The Yellow Book" in 1895, soon after Wilde was arrested for homosexuality. He was approached by Leonard Smithers, a publisher of erotic books, who asked him to illustrate "Lysistrata." His illustrations are very much in the spirit of Aristophanes, as funny as they are obscene. Beardsley converted to Catholicism in 1897, and soon after, he asked Smithers to "destroy all copies of "Lysistrata"" with its "obscene drawings," but Smithers refused. Beardsley died of tuberculosis in 1898, at the age of 26. Smithers initially published "Lysistrata" in a limited edition of one hundred copies. It was reprinted in the 1960s and 1970s, but copies have long been scarce and expensive. Though some may find it offensive, we believe it is valuable to reprint this book, so all the books illustrated by this great artist are readily available.
Download or read book Ski Inc. 2020 written by Chris Diamond and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ski world has been turned upside down." Chris Diamond's first book, Ski Inc., had just hit bookshelves in December 2016 when shock waves reverberated through the ski resort landscape. In early 2017, the Alterra Mountain Company emerged to challenge Vail Resorts' supremacy, eventually buying 15 resorts, partnering with another 25-plus, and launching the Ikon Pass to compete with the Epic Pass. The story behind Alterra's rise is remarkable, as is Vail Resorts' counter-offensive in the form of its own buying spree, which most recently included the acquisition of the 17 ski areas of Peak Resorts. Through countless interviews, hundreds of sources, and deep firsthand experience, Diamond dissects this unprecedented upheaval, in which the business has been radically, disruptively, and yet positively transformed. "Ski Inc. 2020 accomplished in a matter of hours what I'd failed to do on my own in a decade: make sense of present-day resort headlines in the context of how we got here in the first place," says Gregg Blanchard, the senior vice president of Strategy for Inntopia. When Diamond started this Ski Inc. 2020 sequel, he thought it would be primarily the story of how these "Big Two" resort companies suddenly came to control more than half of the U.S. ski resort business through their mega-passes, and what it means for skiers and snowboarders. But as he dug deeper, he discovered dynamic trajectories among the next three largest ski conglomerates (Boyne Resorts, POWDR and Peak Resorts, now part of Vail), plus ingenuity and innovation at a host of small- and medium-sized resorts, dozens of which are chronicled in the book. Besides the widespread success of value season passes, which trade early commitment for dramatically reduced pricing, resorts large and small have polished their operations. The success starts with passionate leadership and extends to every line item. Resorts now avoid risky real-estate projects; vigorously market to and build relationships with digitally savvy customers; sharpen margins across all departments; and improve the product in every way. For an industry that historically suffered through peaks and valleys with the weather and economy, the result today is an impressive bottom-line consistency that has drawn investor interest worldwide. There are daunting hurdles ahead, with climate change and sluggish participation trends at the top of the disrupter list, but the future is arguably brighter than ever. With season passes at circa-1970s prices, while providing access to dozens of resorts rather than just one, there's never been a better time to be a skier or snowboarder. This book is an eye-opener, a deep, colorful dive beneath the headlines, for any skier or rider who wants to understand today's landscape. And it's a must-read for anyone who works--or wants to work--in the ski industry. "Chris Diamond takes the reader to a higher level of understanding on the state of the ski-resort industry than anyone has ever done," says Michael Berry, who served as the president of the National Ski Areas Association for 25 years. "Key executives opened up to Chris in a way that is unique to this book; their candor and Chris's astute observations combine to make a compelling read. If you love winter, love mountains, and love to slide on snow, this book is a must-read."
