Book excerpt: This book assesses Alaskan wolf and bear management programs from scientific and economic perspectives. Relevant factors that should be taken into account when evaluating the utility of such programs are identified. The assessment includes a review of current scientific knowledge about the dynamics and management of large mammalian predator-prey relationships and human harvest of wildlife in northern ecosystems, and an evaluation of the extent to which existing research and management data allow prediction of the outcome of wolf management or control programs and grizzly bear management programs. Included is an evaluation of available economic studies and methodologies for estimating the costs and benefits of predator control programs in Alaska.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book signaled a shift in the understanding of the global reorganization of biological species during the Anthropocene. The encouragement of acclimatization and naturalization of new species gave way to managing the ramifications of the changes that introductions bought to ecologies, landscapes and environments. The 19th century environments of the new world - land and sea - became testing grounds for the introduction of new assemblages of people and plants, economies and animals, cultures and coastlines. But some species became out-of-control threats to environments across the globe. These changes have enduring impacts, some adverse, some beneficial, that are dynamic, unpredictable and often oscillating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion volume to Environmental Conflict in Alaska, Pioneering Conservation in Alaska chronicles the central land and wildlife issues and the growth of environmental conservation in Alaska during its Russian and territorial eras. The Alaskan frontier tempted fur traders, whalers, salmon fishers, gold miners, hunters, and oilmen to take what they could without regard for long-term consequences. Wildlife species, ecosystems, and Native cultures suffered, sometimes irreparably. Damage to wildlife and lands drew the attention of environmentalists, including John Muir, who applied their influence to enact wildlife protection laws and set aside lands for conservation. Alaska served as a testing ground for emergent national resource policy in the United States, as environmental values of species and ecosystem sustainability replaced the unrestrained exploitation of Alaska's early frontier days. Efforts of conservation leaders and the territory's isolation, small human population, and late development prevented widespread destruction and gave Americans a unique opportunity to protect some of the world's most pristine wilderness. Enhanced by more than 100 photographs, Pioneering Conservation in Alaska illustrates the historical precedents for current natural resource disputes in Alaska and will fascinate readers interested in wildlife and conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An appraisal of taiga (the northern forests of interior Alaska) environment research opportunities and needs was made based upon accomplishments since Alaskan statehood, current involvement of citizens in resource issues, information needs incident to the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, and needs of new resource managing agencies and changing ownerships brought about by statehood and the settlement of aboriginal land claims. Based upon this appraisal, it is proposed that the research needs can best be met through a ultidisciplinary interagency program. The program suggests closer coordination among several departments of the University of Alaska and a number of State and Federal agencies currently involved in applicable research. The urgency of research implementation is related to rapid change and diminishing opportunity to insure orderly development of Alaska's resources.
