Book excerpt: Plants are fundamental to life; they are used by all human groups and most animals. They provide raw materials, vitamins and essential nutrients and we could not survive without them. Yet access to plant use before the Neolithic can be challenging. In some places, plant remains rarely survive and reconstructing plant use in pre-agrarian contexts needs to be conducted using a range of different techniques. This lack of visible evidence has led to plants being undervalued, both in terms of their contribution to diet and as raw materials. This book outlines why the role of plants is required for a better understanding of hominin and pre-agrarian human life, and it offers a variety of ways in which this can be achieved. Wild Harvest is divided into three sections. In section 1 each chapter focuses on a specific feature of plant use by humans; this covers the role of carbohydrates, the need for and effects of processing methods, the role of plants in self-medication among apes, plants as raw materials, and the extent of evidence for plant use prior to the development of agriculture in the Near East. Section 2 comprises seven chapters which cover different methods available to obtain information on plants, and the third section has five chapters, each covering a topic related to ethnography, ethnohistory, or ethnoarchaeology, and how these can be used to improve our understanding of the role of plants in the pre-agrarian past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this book provides ready access to legislation and practice concerning the environment in Uganda. A general introduction covers geographic considerations, political, social and cultural aspects of environmental study, the sources and principles of environmental law, environmental legislation, and the role of public authorities. The main body of the book deals first with laws aimed directly at protecting the environment from pollution in specific areas such as air, water, waste, soil, noise, and radiation. Then, a section on nature and conservation management covers protection of natural and cultural resources such as monuments, landscapes, parks and reserves, wildlife, agriculture, forests, fish, subsoil, and minerals. Further treatment includes the application of zoning and land-use planning, rules on liability, and administrative and judicial remedies to environmental issues. There is also an analysis of the impact of international and regional legislation and treaties on environmental regulation. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable resource for environmental lawyers handling cases affecting Uganda. Academics and researchers, as well as business investors and the various international organizations in the field, will welcome this very useful guide, and will appreciate its value in the study of comparative environmental law and policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classification of East African Crops is a revised modern version of a book first published in 1979. It is a handbooks grouping the crops, timber, and common ornamental plants found in East Africa into 26 classes. The plants are discussed under two broad categories, namely, usage and commercial classifications. the Type A group of plants, based on usage classification, has 19 classes including the famous categories such as cereals, fruits, vegetables, legumes, oil crops, fiber crops, and forage and fodder plants amongst others. The Type B group, based on commercial use of the plants, covers food crops, cash crops, commercial horticultural crops, forbidden crops (drug plants), and bee forage or useful plants for honey bees. Each class has a full or brief discussion of the crops or useful plants grown in modern East Africa covering Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. The most important part of the handbooks is the list of all major and minor crops and useful plants in each class containing the English or trade names, the botanical names, and the families to which they belong. The book has over 70 selected colour plates illustrating different crops and other useful plants. It is an excellent handbook for university and college scholars, students, and researchers in agriculture, forestry, environment, and animal husbandry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HARVESTING FOODS from WEEDS Food science is a rapidly changing and complicated subject. This new series addresses the current state-of-the-art concepts and technologies associated with the industry and will cover new ideas and emerging novel technologies and processes. With the world’s population continuing to grow exponentially, with many “food deserts” across the globe, including even in rich countries, food production is more important than ever. Finding alternative ways to produce food, in a sustainable way, is increasingly important and something that is on the minds of scientists, engineers, policy makers, and other professionals. Weeds are mainly undesirable plants, but nowadays researchers are exploring these weeds as a food source. Weeds can also grow in adverse climatic conditions with minimum nutritional requirements. Weeds that are rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds are suitable ingredients for functional foods and meet nutritional requirements at a cheaper cost and thus are lucrative and attractive for the food industry. This latest volume in the groundbreaking series, “Bioprocessing in the Food Industry,” covers different types of weeds, like eleusine indica, tribulus terrestris, hibiscus cannabinus, corchorus, gynandra gynandropsis, and many others. These weeds have limited food applications, mainly because of traditional food production. This book will provide detailed knowledge regarding the nutritional value, health benefits and processing methods of these weeds. Readers will learn how these weeds can be utilized for food production, healthy food development, and sustainability. Combining the technological requirements, food safety and quality, this book showcases the utilization of modern technologies to process food products with great benefits. The volume will comprehensively meet the knowledge requirements for the curriculum of undergraduate, postgraduate and research students for learning the concepts of bioprocessing in food engineering, as well as veteran engineers, policy makers, scientists, chemists, and other industry professionals. It is a must have for any library.
