Book excerpt: - Two books about American legend Wild Bill Hickok are in this edition: Life and Marvelous Adventures of Wild Bill, the Scout & Wild Bill's Last Trail 'Wild Bill' Hickok American James Butler Hickok (1837-1876) was a folk hero of the Old West, known for his frontier work wagon master, soldier, spy, scout, lawman, gunfighter, gambler and showman. He was notorious due to his outlandish - and often fabricated - tales about his life. Hickok was born and raised on an Illinois farm in an era when lawlessness and vigilante activity was rampant. Hickok was attracted to this ruffian lifestyle and headed west at 18 as a fugitive from justice. He worked as a stagecoach driver and later a frontier lawman in Kansas and Nebraska. He spied for the Union Army during the American Civil War and was well-known as a scout, marksman, and professional gambler. Over the course of his life, he was involved in several notable shootouts. Book I Life and Marvelous Adventures of Wild Bill, the Scout, being a true and exact history of all the sanguinary combats and hair-breadth escapes of the most famous scout and spy America ever produced (First Published 1880). By author J. W. (James) Buel This is purportedly a "true" history of the hair-breadth escapes of the most famous scout and spy America has ever known. The book is generally considered the first biography of Wild Bill, but author J.W. Buel was not known for his accuracy. The author claimed to have known Wild Bill and to have had access to his diary, but -- as is the case in many works about legendary Western figures -- the truth and the fiction often combine. Book II Wild Bill's Last Trail, by Ned Buntline (pen name of New York writer Edward Zane Carroll Judson, Sr. 1821-1886). A story of one of the most noted shots, and certainly the most desperate man of his age and day west of the Mississippi River Author Ned Buntline was an American publisher, journalist, writer, and publicist. He reputedly commissioned the Colt firearms manufacturer to make a customized revolver (although evidence of that is hard to come by). Buntline was reportedly in Nebraska when learned that "Wild Bill" Hickok was in Fort McPherson. He hoped to interview him and found Hickok in a saloon. As the story goes, Buntline rushed up to Hickok saying, "There's my man! I want you!" Hickok wasn't a fan of surprises. He threatened Buntline with a gun and told him to get out of town within 24 hours. Buntline wasn't taking any chances and left but he decided to finding Hickok's friends to gather stories. This may be how he first met Buffalo Bill.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Bill’s ever-evolving legend When it came to the Wild West, the nineteenth-century press rarely let truth get in the way of a good story. James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok’s story was no exception. Mythologized and sensationalized, Hickok was turned into the deadliest gunfighter of all, a so-called moral killer, a national phenomenon even while he was alive. Rather than attempt to tease truth from fiction, coauthors Paul Ashdown and Edward Caudill investigate the ways in which Hickok embodied the culture of glamorized violence Americans embraced after the Civil War and examine the process of how his story emerged, evolved, and turned into a viral multimedia sensation full of the excitement, danger, and romance of the West. Journalists, the coauthors demonstrate, invented “Wild Bill” Hickok, glorifying him as a civilizer. They inflated his body count and constructed his legend in the midst of an emerging celebrity culture that grew up around penny newspapers. His death by treachery, at a relatively young age, made the story tragic, and dime-store novelists took over where the press left off. Reimagined as entertainment, Hickok’s legend continued to enthrall Americans in literature, on radio, on television, and in the movies, and it still draws tourists to notorious Deadwood, South Dakota. American culture often embraces myths that later become accepted as popular history. By investigating the allure and power of Hickok’s myth, Ashdown and Caudill explain how American journalism and popular culture have shaped the way Civil War–era figures are remembered and reveal how Americans have embraced violence as entertainment.

Book excerpt: Eulogised and ostracised, James Butler Hickok was alternately labelled courageous, affable, and self-confident; cowardly, cold-blooded, and drunken; a fine specimen of manhood; an overdressed dandy with perfumed hair; an unequaled marksman; and a poor shot. Born in Illinois in 1837, he was shot dead in Deadwood only 39 years later. By then both famous and infamous, he was widely known as Wild Bill.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody were considered heroes and the greatest plainsmen of their time. They were larger than life, legendary characters. They knew where to locate water, good grass for livestock, sheltered campsites, and game for hunting. They knew how to survive the blistering heat and terrific thunderstorms of summer and the subzero blizzards of winter. They could avoid Indians or act as trackers following the trails of Indians as well as desperados. They were expert marksmen and did not back down from a fight. They rushed in where others held back. Hickok, a frontier wagon and stagecoach driver, became a Union spy during the Civil War, furthering his reputation after the war as a frontier Army scout, gunfighter, and lawman. Cody, who claimed to ride for the Pony Express, served in the Union Army, and became legendary as an expert buffalo hunter and Army scout. Hickok and Cody were good friends and experienced a series of adventures together. Hickok traveled to Deadwood, Dakota Territory, during the 1876 Black Hills goldrush where he was assassinated by Jack McCall. Cody continued scouting for the Army and after the Battle of the Little Big Horn, won a one-on-one duel with a Cheyenne warrior, Yellow Hair. Cody went on to become one of the most well-known showmen in the world with his Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody: Plainsmen, the fourth book in the Legendary West series, explores the lives of these two well-known characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “James Butler Hickok, generally called ‘Wild Bill,’ epitomized the archetypal gunfighter, that half-man, half-myth that became the heir to the mystique of the duelist when that method of resolving differences waned. . . . Easy access to a gun and whiskey coupled with gambling was the cause of most gunfights--few of which bore any resemblance to the gentlemanly duel of earlier times. . . . Hickok’s gunfights were unusual in that most of them were ‘fair’ fights, not just killings resulting from rage, jealousy over a woman, or drunkenness. And, the majority of his encounters were in his role as lawman or as an individual upholding the law.”--from Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok (1837–1876) was a Civil War spy and scout, Indian fighter, gambler, and peace officer. He was also one of the greatest gunfighters in the West. His peers referred to his reflexes as “phenomenal” and to his skill with a pistol as “miraculous.” In Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter, Joseph G. Rosa, the world’s foremost authority on Hickok, provides an informative examination of Hickok’s many gunfights. Rosa describes the types of guns used by Hickok and illustrates his use of the plains’ style of “quick draw,” as well as examining other elements of the Hickok legend. He even reconsiders the infamous “dead man’s hand” allegedly held by Hickok when he was shot to death at age thirty-nine while playing poker. Numerous photographs and drawings accompany Rosa’s down-to-earth text.
