Book excerpt: How and why the idea of wellness holds such rhetorical—and harmful—power. In Why Wellness Sells, Colleen Derkatch examines why the concept of wellness holds such rhetorical power in contemporary culture. Public interest in wellness is driven by two opposing philosophies of health that cycle into and amplify each other: restoration, where people use natural health products to restore themselves to prior states of wellness; and enhancement, where people strive for maximum wellness by optimizing their body's systems and functions. Why Wellness Sells tracks the tension between these two ideas of wellness across a variety of sources, including interviews, popular and social media, advertising, and online activism. Derkatch examines how wellness manifests across multiple domains, where being "well" means different things, ranging from a state of pre-illness to an empowered act of good consumer-citizenship, from physical or moral purification to sustenance and care, and from harm reduction to optimization. Along the way, Derkatch demonstrates that the idea of wellness may promise access to the good life, but it serves primarily as a strategy for coping with a devastating and overwhelming present. Drawing on scholarship in the rhetoric of health and medicine, the health and medical humanities, and related fields, Derkatch offers a nuanced account of how language, belief, behavior, experience, and persuasion collide to produce and promote wellness, one of the most compelling—and harmful—concepts that govern contemporary Western life. She explains that wellness has become so pervasive in the United States and Canada because it is an ever-moving, and thus unachievable, goal. The concept of wellness entrenches an individualist model of health as a personal responsibility, when collectivist approaches would more readily serve the health and well-being of whole populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new wellness market is being formed by the convergence of various fields such as functional food, healthcare, pharmaceutical, dental, and fitness. The traditional dental practice evolves towards the model of «smile clinics chains». The traditional pharmacy gives way to genuine retailers with large exhibition spaces, sophisticated merchandising and a wide range within which prescription drugs are only one of the types on sale. The companies in the healthcare industry are gradually miniaturizing and digitalizing their devices. And more, if primary care physicians and dentists use diagnostic equipment once the exclusive domain of clinics and hospitals, and sometimes they buy online through portals, pharmaceutical companies suffer from the competition of cosmetic companies operating in the line of food. With food and functional products - from anti-cholesterol yoghurt that strengthens bones, through dietary supplements – they replace, fir illnesses and diseases which are not serious, some categories of drugs. While gyms and spas on the one hand and clinics on the other come to resemble more and more: the first offer beauty and health treatments, the latter wellness treatments. Thus a new competitive environment that requires special expertise is arising: The Wellness Marketing, where customer and market orientation must be integrated with technological skills essential for success, and where specific strategies are needed and marketing activities targeted. Then what is the identikit of the successful company in the market of Wellness Marketing? The book offers concrete answers, first clearly defining the concept and boundaries of Wellness Marketing, then delving into real cases, the emerging issues, to provide the management of the sector strategic responses and guidance on activities essential to success.

As you discover yourself throughout this book, it is my goal for you to love yourself more. Allowing you to love your family more and loving those that you sell to more. Are you tired of being stressed, feeling anxiety and depression? Are you always mentally and emotionally exhausted? Do you think to yourself, "is this normal" and/or "is this all there is to life?"If you relate to any or all of these questions this book is for you. If you know someone that feels this way, then this book is for you and them. You will hear my story in the first chapter, so for now, I just want you to know, I've been where you are at. I've had those feelings of depression and sadness. Feelings of being unworthy of success. That is why I'm writing this book. To bring awareness to the sales profession of the mental wellness challenges that you face as a professional salesperson. It is not normal for you to feel this way and you are not alone. Those around you are hiding their feelings deep inside, just as you are. There is hope. In this book we do not look at mental wellness as an illness, but rather as a challenge to perform better than you are right now. Feel better tomorrow than you do today, so you can create an edge over your competition. Create a better life for you and your family, as well as those you sell to.

Book excerpt: "With the incredible popularity of Michael Moore's books and movies, and the continuing success of anti-consumer critiques like ADBUSTERS and Naomi Klien's NO LOGO, it is hard to ignore the growing tide of resistance to the corporate-dominated world. But do these vocal opponents of the status quo offer us a real political alternative?" "In this work of cultural criticism, Joseph Heath and Andrew Potter shatter the central myth of radical political, economic and cultural thinking. The idea of a counterculture, a world outside the consumer-dominated one that encompasses us, pervades everything from the anti-globalization movement to feminism and environmentalism. And the idea that mocking the system, or trying to 'jam' it so it will collapse, they argue, is not only counterproductive but has helped to create the very consumer society that radicals oppose." "In a blend of pop culture, history and philosophical analysis, Heath and Potter offer a startling, clear picture of what a concern for social justice might look like without the confusion of the counterculture obsession with being different."--Book jacket.
