Starting out as a prosecutor, his idealism and soft-hearted nature soon gets him eaten alive in the rat race that is the legal community, which seems to spare no mercy for a rookie like him. Although Don’s diligence and natural charm has him move up the professional ladder in no time, little does he suspect that his chosen career is going to take him for one hell of a life-changing ride. Set in the fast-paced, articulate world of the legal practice, Why Is She Blindfolded tells the story of Donald Carpenter, a well-meaning, kindhearted attorney who ends up having to face the harsh realities in a career where money is king and connections is power. Don soon realizes that being a lawyer is not all courthouse triumphs and celebrations and that the eyes of the Lady of Justice are covered for another reason.

Book excerpt: Justice Blindfolded gives an overview of the history of “justice” and its iconography through the centuries. Justice has been portrayed as a woman with scales, or holding a sword, or, since the fifteenth century, with her eyes bandaged. This last symbol contains the idea that justice is both impartial and blind, reminding indirectly of the bandaged Christ on the cross, a central figure in the Christian idea of fairness and forgiveness. In this rich and imaginative journey through history and philosophy, Prosperi manages to convey a full account of the ways justice has been described, portrayed and imagined. Translation of Giustizia bendata. Percorsi storici di un'immagine (Einaudi, 2008).

Book excerpt: The contributions to this volume were written by historians, legal historians and art historians, each using his or her own methods and sources, but all concentrating on topics from the broad subject of historical legal iconography. How have the concepts of law and justice been represented in (public) art from the Late Middle Ages onwards? Justices and rulers had their courtrooms, but also churches, decorated with inspiring images. At first, the religious influence was enormous, but starting with the Early Modern Era, new symbols and allegories began appearing. Throughout history, art has been used to legitimise the act of judging, but artists have also satirised the law and the lawyers; architects and artisans have engaged in juridical and judicial projects and, in some criminal cases, convicts have even been sentenced to produce works of art. The book illustrates and contextualises the various interactions between law and justice on the one hand, and their artistic representations in paintings, statues, drawings, tapestries, prints and books on the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant, clear-eyed consideration of the visual representation of violence in our culture--its ubiquity, meanings, and effects. Considered one of the greatest critics of her generation, Susan Sontag followed up her monumental On Photography with an extended study of human violence, reflecting on a question first posed by Virginia Woolf in Three Guineas: How in your opinion are we to prevent war? "For a long time some people believed that if the horror could be made vivid enough, most people would finally take in the outrageousness, the insanity of war." One of the distinguishing features of modern life is that it supplies countless opportunities for regarding (at a distance, through the medium of photography) horrors taking place throughout the world. But are viewers inured—or incited—to violence by the depiction of cruelty? Is the viewer’s perception of reality eroded by the daily barrage of such images? What does it mean to care about the sufferings of others far away? First published more than twenty years after her now classic book On Photography, which changed how we understand the very condition of being modern, Regarding the Pain of Others challenges our thinking not only about the uses and means of images, but about how war itself is waged (and understood) in our time, the limits of sympathy, and the obligations of conscience.

Book excerpt: Iris Vegan, a young, impoverished graduate student from the Midwest, finds herself entangled with four powerful but threatening characters as she tries to adjust to life in New York City. Mr. Morning, an inscrutable urban recluse, employs Iris to tape-record verbal descriptions of objects that belonged to a murder victim. George, a photographer, takes an eerie portrait of Iris, which then acquires a strange life of its own, appearing and disappearing without warning around the city. After a series of blinding migraines, Iris ends up in a hospital room with Mrs. O., a woman who has lost her mind and memory to a stroke, but who nevertheless retains both the strength and energy to torment her fellow patient. And finally, there is Professor Rose, Iris's teacher and eventually her lover. While working with him on the translation of a German novella called The Brutal Boy, she discovers in its protagonist, Klaus, a vehicle for her own transformation and ventures out into the city again--this time dressed as a man. Siri Hustvedt's The Blindfold is "...a work of dizzying intensity. . .eloquent and vivid." - Don DeLillo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some are blind from birth, while others, like Helen Keller, are blinded by illness. Still others lose sight through accidents or progressive disease. I submit no one would choose to go through life without sight. And yet the church today is certainly blindfolded. I do not believe the blindness of the church happened suddenly. There have been brilliant moves of God in the church since the Lord’s ascension. However, it has been a slow, methodical process whereby a blindfold has slipped over the eyes of discernment, and the church chooses to remain in the dark. Why would anyone choose to remain blind? Think of it this way. A child born blind cannot describe the experience of seeing a beautiful rose, the glow of a sunset, the majesty of snowcapped mountains, or a crashing waterfall. There is no desire for sight, having never experienced the sensation. For those that see, we would never choose to be blind and remain so. A blindfold suggests that something has willfully been placed over the eyes to prevent sight. The enemy has not only pulled the blindfold over the spiritual eyes of the church but deceived her into thinking she can still see. Jesus Christ was sent to heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives, and recover sight to the blind. May we, the church of the living God, remove the blindfold and once again charge forth with the gospel to a lost and dying world.

Book excerpt: A century before Tiger Woods’ 2009 breakdown, the best golfer in America was embroiled in an equally corrosive “secret life.” However, the truth of this man’s hidden shame stayed out of the press for decades after his shocking demise. Proceeding from facts known of the player in question, as well as his clan, this historical novel conjectures several major unreported melodramas that engulfed that family of immigrant Scots – beyond the trials of its central character. Their collective miseries are spellbinding; their triumphs, tragic; and their strains to cleanse the stain of sin, haunting. As for their golfing, be prepared for an amalgam of wondrous and excruciating play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Riding a Bike Blindfolded is based on the thoughts and experiences written by a heroin addict named Scott. His words and illustrations were found and read by his mother, Lori, after he died from an overdose. Due to his addiction, Scott left home and was not welcomed back until he stopped using drugs, something he could not manage to do. He lived from place to place, including abandoned warehouses, condemned shacks, and boxes in alleys, among other uncomfortable places. Undoubtedly, he shared all these places with rats and other hungry creatures. Sometimes, he was lucky and shared a friend's apartment. Other times, he spent weeks, months, or years in jail cells or prison. From all these places, he wrote what has come to be the journal you will read in this book. In every page of Scott's journal, he tells you every part of his life—from what it's like to share a crowded jail holding cell with sick and scary prisoners or being arrested and handcuffed in front of his girlfriend and every detail he suffered during his horrendous journey with heroin. The journal is not just about his experience with addiction. Scott was not just about addiction. He was an athlete, an artist, a pole dancer, the gymnast kind, and a poet. He loved his family, his friends, and especially the girl he hoped to marry. You will find yourself wanting to be his friend one minute, and the next minute, you will want to scream how mad you are because of his choices. This story is like no other one. It is told in a very personal way that makes you feel a part of his life. The last words Scott writes are written on the very day he died. His death will make you sad and maybe a little angry that some very bad people killed him...and walked away.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should Justice be blind or should she instead be capable of seeing everything, even the human heart? Jose M. Gonzalez Garcia examines how the iconography of Justice evolved over the course of history. Providing an overview of depictions of Justice in various ages and places, the book mainly focuses on "The Blindfold Dispute" that began to develop during Renaissance. While at first the blindfold was perceived as unjust, precisely because it denied Justice the ability to see everything, it transformed just a few years later into a positive symbol of the equality of all individuals before the law. And other depictions were added: supplementary eyes, transparent blindfolds, the double face of Janus, the returns of Astraea and the "Eye of the Law". The book also analyses important historic moments in which the crisis of the Law went along with a search for new forms of representing the gaze of Justice, as reflections on the art of Durer, Klimt and Kafka as well as recent developments in political philosophy show.

In this book Dan Pukstas, a blind professor, answers this question by providing a series of humorous and insightful perspectives about the places and people he encountered. Whether he is trying to find his way out of a strange restroom or climbing to the summit of a dormant volcano after by-pass surgery, Dan is ready with a philosophical quip or amusing observation. In the company of his wife Nancy, Dan covers a broad geographical area from Auckland to Adelaide, from Ayers Rock to Sydney, and from Cairns to Brisbane along 2000 kilometers of Queensland highway. His topics of interest are just as broad-from his observations about food, wine prices, parenting styles, public transportation, human behavior to the joys and challenges of travel for the visually impaired. Those who like witty and pointed observations served up with a modest amount of inspiration will find this book a tasty treat. Those who have healthy vision might also find that they will see things a bit more clearly after reading this book.
