Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of six unforgettable stories from Nobel laureate Gao Xingjian. Dealing with Gao's trademark themes of relationships, family, the political scene in China and exploration of the self, these stories are by turns moving, beautiful and thought-provoking. With the exception of 'In an Instant', all the stories were written in China in the early 1980s and published in Chinese in a collection called Gei wo laoye mai yugan (Buying a Fishing Rod for My Grandfather) by Lianhe Press in taipei 1989. 'In an Instant' was written in Paris in October 1990 but not published until 1996 in the collection Zhoumo sichongzhou, after Soul Mountain had been published in early 1990. this is the perfect first taste of the work of Gao Xingjian - short, sweet and highly accessible - something for those who have heard about the author but are unsure where to start.

Book Synopsis The Jumping Fish by : Jennifer Wrzosek
Download or read book The Jumping Fish written by Jennifer Wrzosek and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jumping Fish is a story about a granddaughter‘s visit with her grandparents in a Mexican Village. Ericka and her grandfather share a special moment talking about how we are all created for a purpose and a time. This conversation focuses on a fish that was in the fisherman‘s boat and has just died. The story uses the death of the jumping fish to talk about death and the appreciation of life. The book will appeal to an audience of young children (4 years and older) but would best be shared with a caregiver. The book could provide opportunities to have a discussion about feelings that occur when something or someone dies. Ericka realizes that as the fish dies we all will eventually die. Both the fisherman and her grandpa share loving thoughts to help Ericka move through this concept. Though death is discussed, I believe the main theme is about the appreciation of life; cherishing and making memories with loved ones thus forming strong relationships. An interesting feature of the book is the illustrations and the unique colour background capturing the fun and energy of a Mexican holiday. The images match the story in a very unique way and it was a pleasure working with two very talented artists. We hope that the compassion and love that weaves through the story will touch the hearts of all who read it. Thank you Jennifer, Stephanie, and Chalene.

Book excerpt: "The reader will quickly be drawn into an audience of grandchildren who are listening to their grandpa tell them a bedtime story that twists and turns in their mind as if they were on a winding trail interconnecting five generations of their family. Together they discover, in a most captivating and surprising way, the bonding elements of love between those whom we call family. The story takes place when the grandpa was five years old and his own grandfather, Ike, driving a funny old car called a Model A, took him and his two older brothers fishing. It was going to be the best day of his life. The excitement builds as the story comes alive, as if it was happening right at that moment. But then, suddenly a near tragedy takes place. An event the children’s grandpa had never shared with them before. When the story ends, and in the still silence of the night, just before their grandpa turns off the light in the treehouse he built for them, all the children are out of their sleeping bags hugging their grandpa and each other. This story is likely to invoke children’s interest in the experiences of adults, be it parents, grandparents or extended family members."--

More than anything else they love fishing. But Grandpa gets sick and is in the hospital a long time. When he gets out, he and Joshua share one more fishing adventure, and Grandpa promises Joshua that he will always be near. “Think of it this way,” Grandpa says. “Today, you and I are like two fish swimming together in this lake. When I die, things will be different. I won’t be a fish anymore, but I’ll become something even better. My love will be like the water in the lake. You might think I’m not with you, but we’ll be closer than ever because you’ll be surrounded by my love.” Long after Grandpa dies, Joshua comes to understand that Grandpa kept his promise—and that love and its memory survive death. When grown-up Joshua goes fishing with his daughter, he teaches her what Grandpa taught him: “She knows we never have to feel alone or afraid because we are surrounded by a love that lasts forever.” “Each memory is like a special gift I can unwrap again and again,” said Grandpa. “And that’s a gift I want to give you, too.”
