Book excerpt: A review of the basic theory of optimal open-source software contributions points to three key factors affecting the decision to contribute to the open-source development process: non-pecuniary benefits, future expected monetary returns, and open-source licence type. This paper argues that existing large-scale software developer surveys are inadequate for measuring the relative importance of these three factors. Previous econometric studies that collect their own unique datasets also fall short because they generally measure the importance of only one supply factor in isolation. To fill the gap, I specify an estimable dynamic programming model of joint labour supply and open-source participation decisions that can provide empirical estimates of relative importance within a single unified framework of optimal decision-making.

Book excerpt: Much of the innovative programming that powers the Internet, creates operating systems, and produces software is the result of "open source" code, that is, code that is freely distributed--as opposed to being kept secret--by those who write it. Leaving source code open has generated some of the most sophisticated developments in computer technology, including, most notably, Linux and Apache, which pose a significant challenge to Microsoft in the marketplace. As Steven Weber discusses, open source's success in a highly competitive industry has subverted many assumptions about how businesses are run, and how intellectual products are created and protected. Traditionally, intellectual property law has allowed companies to control knowledge and has guarded the rights of the innovator, at the expense of industry-wide cooperation. In turn, engineers of new software code are richly rewarded; but, as Weber shows, in spite of the conventional wisdom that innovation is driven by the promise of individual and corporate wealth, ensuring the free distribution of code among computer programmers can empower a more effective process for building intellectual products. Scholars have expressed widespread concern about the sustainability of the OSS movement due to high levels of volunteerism. In this paper, we address a central challenge to the sustainability of OSS- developers' acceptance of monetary rewards. We strive to explain why some OSS developers accept monetary rewards and others do not. Viewed through the theoretical lens of the private-collective innovation model (Von Hippel and Von Krogh 2003, 2006), this allows us to describe when developers will accept private financial rewards. Our main research objective is to clearly map the web of relationships between causal antecedents, and developers' acceptance behavior. Using a unique dataset that combines survey and behavioral measures, we find that- a) intention to accept monetary rewards mediates the impact of motivational elements on developers' acceptance of monetary rewards; b) intrinsic and extrinsic motivations positively affect their intention to accept monetary rewards, community motivation negatively impacts intention and ideological motivation does not affect the intention to accept rewards and c) these effects are obtained even after inclusion of several control variables. The theoretical and managerial implications of our work are described.

Though researchers agree that for the progress of OSS projects, financial support, rewards, and incentives are critical if not essential, we are yet to understand the dynamics of compensation structures/policies and their impact on the long-term sustainability of OSS projects and communities. In this research, we aim to explore the role of developers' perceived asymmetry in compensation in OSS projects. Using grounded theory procedures to code and analyse the textual responses from the developers, we find a mixed opinion on whether the perceived asymmetric distribution of project's financial resources, helps or impedes the progress of an OSS project. We find that fair-terms, transparency and effective communication practices are essential to the sustainability of OSS projects, even with perceived asymmetric compensation.
