Download or read book little scratch written by Rebecca Watson and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extraordinary"--THE NEW YORKER In the formally innovative tradition of Grief Is the Thing with Feathers and Ducks, Newburyport comes a dazzlingly original, shot-in-the-arm of a debut that reveals a young woman's every thought over the course of one deceptively ordinary day. She wakes up, goes to work. Watches the clock and checks her phone. But underneath this monotony there's something else going on: something under her skin. Relayed in interweaving columns that chart the feedback loop of memory, the senses, and modern distractions with wit and precision, our narrator becomes increasingly anxious as the day moves on: Is she overusing the heart emoji? Isn't drinking eight glasses of water a day supposed to fix everything? Why is the etiquette of the women's bathroom so fraught? How does she define rape? And why can't she stop scratching? Fiercely moving and slyly profound, little scratch is a defiantly playful look at how our minds function in--and survive--the darkest moments.

This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Best American Short Plays). "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Really? Words can break spirits, destroy confidence. They can also build hope and incite great acts of heroism. Playwrights know this, and so do theater audiences. Otherwise, why go? Words matter and carry clout every bit as dangerous as a hammer or crowbar. This, too, playwrights know. The monologues in this volume are full of such blows, striking at our imaginations and our memories, generating responses such as joyful laughter or chilling surprise. Others squeeze us into worlds we've never experienced, or perhaps experienced at the furthest edges of memory and recollection. Still others may help us alter the way we see certain things, people, or beliefs. Best Monologues from The Best American Short Plays, Volume Three is a collection of monologues drawn from the popular Best American Short Plays series, an archive of works from many of the best playwrights active today. Long or short, serious or not, excerpts or entireties, this collection abounds in speech acts that may trigger physical reactions and almost certainly will transform an attitude or two, drawing out lost memories, creating new ones, and definitely entertaining, engaging, amusing us all along the way.

Download or read book The Mysterious Case of the Nefarious Seafarers written by CJ Lutton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To those so inclined, my long association with the great Sherlock Holmes, may appear at first blush, an incredible journey through life. Valiant knights on a quest to rid the world of evil doers, with the occasional, slaying of a dragon along the way. Truly, a romantic's ideal. After all, what child hasn't dreamt of curing the world's ills and ridding the populace of its criminal element? True, rooming with one of the most remarkable minds of our time, afforded me the privilege of chronicling many of our exciting adventures, but as many of my readers are well aware, Holmes was often churlish and disagreeable when there were no cases to challenge his keen mind. As Holmes would self-pityingly put it, it was during a particularly, cruel and spiteful lull in London's crime rate that I reluctantly, found myself returning to the flat at Baker Street, after completing my consultation at Royal Bethlam Hospital on St. George's Road. As a doctor of medicine, it is normally not my wont or habit to administer to the health and welfare of lunatics, but a colleague was in a quandary, regarding a particular patient and he sought my opinion as to the poor soul's physical, well being. With much trepidation, I allowed myself to be cajoled into paying a visit to Bedlam. So it was that I, upon returning to Baker Street in an already sour mood; caused no doubt, by the deplorable conditions of Bethlam Hospital, that I had little patience with Holmes's, petulant and mean spirited, disposition. Entering the flat, I had no other desire than to scrub the foul stench and oppressive mood off me, and I hung my coat on the back of the door. Holmes lay sprawled on the sofa, browsing the papers, and from the mess of discarded pages scattered about the room, it was obvious that he did not find anything to his liking. Turning his head in my direction, his angry expression, confirmed my fears. "Ah Watson," he remarked sarcastically, swinging upright and tossing the remaining papers in the air. "I trust you had an enjoyable outing?" "Not now, Holmes! I'm in no mood to..." Ignoring my words entirely, Holmes continued to rant on. "Has the Queen offered a proclamation, placing all of London's criminals on holiday? There's not one hint of scandal or conspiracy brewing in any of these rags!" In a fit of tantrum, he punted the newspapers in the air, scattering the fluttering, sheets about the room. "My God Holmes, must you?" Again, ignoring my pleadings, he went on...

Book Synopsis Landscape of the Body by : John Guare
Download or read book Landscape of the Body written by John Guare and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death, desire, and tabloid sensationalism converge in “this delirious heartbreaker of a comedy” by the Tony Award-winning playwright (Ben Brantley, The New York Times). Along with Six Degrees of Separation and The House of Blue Leaves, Landscape of the Body is one of John Guare’s most celebrated plays. It tells the story of a woman’s unfulfilled life and premature death—and her reflections from the grave. Betty Yearn first came to New York City to convince her sister Rosalie to leave the gritty urban world behind and come home to bucolic Maine. But when Rosalie dies in a freak bicycle accident, Betty returns to ease into her sister’s previous persona—moving into her apartment, even taking over her job—as Rosalie watches from the beyond. Then Betty’s fortunes take a jarring turn. After losing her teenage son to murder, she finds herself the primary suspect in the crime. After all, death does seem to have a way of following in her trail. In what Michael Kuchwara of the Associated Press called “his most surreal and haunting play,” John Guare brilliantly moves back and forth in time and space to create an affecting study of the American dream gone awry.

As previous series editor Ramon Delgado wrote in his introduction to The Best American Short Plays of 1989 , the choice of entries for each edition has been based on the same goal: "to include a balance among three categories of playwrights: 1) established playwrights who continue to practice the art and craft of the short play, 2) emerging playwrights whose record of productions indicate both initial achievement and continuing artistic productivity, and 3) talented new playwrights whose work may not have had much exposure but evidences promise for the future." From its inception, The Best American Short Plays has identified new, cutting-edge playwrights who have gone on to establish award-winning careers, including Tennessee Williams ( A Streetcar Named Desire ), Edward Albee ( Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf ), Wendy Wasserstein ( The Heidi Chronicles ), David Mamet ( Glengarry Glen Ross ), and Horton Foote ( The Trip to Bountiful ). This volume is Barbara Parisi's fifth edition as series editor. The volumes of the new millennium include the work of playwrights Murray Schisgal, Adam Kraar, Theodore Mann, David Ives, and Mark Medoff, among others, and tackle complex human issues through diverse theatrical styles and a wide range of character perspectives.
