Book excerpt: Development of one or more vaccines for Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an important objective for sexual and reproductive health worldwide and for the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). WHO preferred product characteristics (PPCs) provide strategic guidance as to WHO’s preferences for new vaccines in priority disease areas. PPCs are intended to encourage innovation and development of vaccines for use in settings most relevant to the global unmet public health need. Gonococcal vaccine PPCs describe global public health goals for gonococcal vaccines and preferred parameters pertaining to vaccine indications and target populations, safety and efficacy considerations, and immunization strategies.

Book excerpt: WHO's pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV infection implementation tool contains modules for a range of stakeholders to support them in the consideration, planning, introduction, implementation and roll-out of PrEP services. The modules can be used on their own or in combination. In addition, there is a module for individuals interested in or already taking oral PrEP. The STI integration module compiles existing WHO recommendations, systematic scientific literature reviews and other relevant publications to provide suggested implementation approaches. It is the product of collaboration among many experts, community organizations and networks, providers, implementers, researchers and partners from all regions. The STI integration module is divided into 2 parts: the first focuses on programme managers and other decision-makers, and the second on health care workers. People who use PrEP will also benefit from it.

Book excerpt: This report presents the recommendations of a WHO Expert Committee commissioned to coordinate activities leading to the adoption of international recommendations for the production and control of vaccines and other biological substances, and the establishment of international biological reference materials. Following a brief introduction, the report summarizes a number of general issues brought to the attention of the Committee. The next part of the report, of particular relevance to manufacturers and national regulatory authorities, outlines the discussions held on the development and adoption of new and revised WHO Recommendations, Guidelines and guidance documents. Following these discussions, WHO Guidelines on the quality, safety and efficacy of respiratory syncytial virus vaccines; and an Amendment document to the WHO Recommendations to assure the quality, safety and efficacy of poliomyelitis vaccines (inactivated) were adopted on the recommendation of the Committee. Subsequent sections of the report provide information on the current status, proposed development and establishment of international reference materials in the areas of: antibiotics; biotherapeutics other than blood products; blood products and related substances; cellular and gene therapies; in vitro diagnostics; and vaccines and related substances. A series of annexes are then presented which include an updated list of all WHO Recommendations, Guidelines and other documents on biological substances used in medicine (Annex 1).

This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One in five people in the United States had a sexually transmitted infection (STI) on any given day in 2018, totaling nearly 68 million estimated infections. STIs are often asymptomatic (especially in women) and are therefore often undiagnosed and unreported. Untreated STIs can have severe health consequences, including chronic pelvic pain, infertility, miscarriage or newborn death, and increased risk of HIV infection, genital and oral cancers, neurological and rheumatological effects. In light of this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, through the National Association of County and City Health Officials, commissioned the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to examine the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provide recommendations for action. In 1997, the Institute of Medicine released a report, The Hidden Epidemic: Confronting Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Although significant scientific advances have been made since that time, many of the problems and barriers described in that report persist today; STIs remain an underfunded and comparatively neglected field of public health practice and research. The committee reviewed the current state of STIs in the United States, and the resulting report, Sexually Transmitted Infections: Advancing a Sexual Health Paradigm, provides advice on future public health programs, policy, and research.
