Book excerpt: Does God really "need" anyone? Lynn Fox Adams answers that question with a resounding yes. As a sufferer of the often-misdiagnosed and misunderstood disease dysautonomia, Lynn has spent her life mostly bedridden and homebound. Yet this has not stopped her from sharing and spreading the message of Jesus Christ throughout the world. "God Needs Me: Living with Dysautonomia" is Lynn's personal story of hope, encouragement, and affirmation that yes, God truly can use "anyone" in his kingdom. Sufferers of dysautonomia or other chronic conditions, as well as friends and family members of those who suffer, will cherish this first-of-its-kind book and find hope, encouragement, and even solutions therein as they discover that a disease, no matter how debilitating, does not have to control one's spiritual existence.

Book Synopsis Trauma, Torture and Dissociation by : Aida Alayarian
Download or read book Trauma, Torture and Dissociation written by Aida Alayarian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical material is presented in close conjunction with clinical data in the form of vignettes and case studies to illustrate the key points outlined in this book, which focuses on the multidimensional approach to the understanding of childhood trauma. It examines the contributions of psychoanalysis, emphasising the act of 'dissociation' (healthy and unhealthy). Specific attention is given to the internalisation of the m/other/object as the 'listening other', and the dissociated part/s that may results in an over idealised yet feared object. The final discussion focuses on how patients in therapy become able to transform fears into 'psychic space' and to break away from vulnerability, by developing a better 'sense of self', as the result of having the therapist as the 'listening other'.

Book Synopsis In One Year's Time by : Melissa A. Robitille
Download or read book In One Year's Time written by Melissa A. Robitille and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 1999-08-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In One Years Time, by Melissa Robitille, begins with Elizabeths death. But no ordinary death this! Elizabeth, she is told by her flamboyant guardian angel Dickon, is to be given a second chance at life, but in 1808! How is a modern girl to manage that, never mind the condition of her second chance? She has to find someone who needs her within just one year. By her introduction to her grandfather, Elizabeth might be off to a good start, but nothing ever goes quite that smoothly for Elizabeth. She meets, and falls in love with, a most independent and stubborn man. Duncan Blackstone is a fine figure of a man, indeed, but has the stubborn nature of a mule to go along with his handsome face. Both Elizabeth and Duncan must first deal with their own hearts and issues before they can admit that they need each other. Elizabeth, after an unspeakable childhood, has problems believing even that Duncan loves her. She doesnt like herself, and doesnt see any particular reason for anyone else to do so. Duncan has his wifes death on his conscience, and quite honestly feels like somewhat of a dirty old man for falling in love with such a young girl. Beyond that, as any man will, he has quite convinced himself that he doesnt need anyone now, nor will he ever. These central figures have help from all sides. Dickon, Elizabeths guardian angel, is waiting for his own second chance with Millicent - Duncans guardian angel. The pair of angels will do all in their power - and even cheat once in a while! - to ensure that Duncan and Elizabeth reach the point of needing each other, but will it be enough? Ian, Elizabeths grandfather is a lonely man, overjoyed to have family again, but even he falls in love - with the dressmaker! Sofie, a widow, is quite set in her belief that Duncan and Elizabeth should be a pair, and that very match making tendency throws her into cahoots with Ian, and love soon ensues. A cast of memorable characters toss Duncan and Elizabeth together, but their own insecurities pull them apart again and again. It seems like nothing can help this pair.

Followed by a former prison mate, a silent hulk of a man named Grim, she travels north to Dalriada. There she’ll live on the fringe of a mysterious forest, duty bound for seven years to assist anyone who asks for her help. Oran, crown prince of Dalriada, has waited anxiously for the arrival of his future bride, Lady Flidais. He knows her only from a portrait and sweetly poetic correspondence that have convinced him Flidais is his destined true love. But Oran discovers letters can lie. For although his intended exactly resembles her portrait, her brutality upon arrival proves she is nothing like the sensitive woman of the letters. With the strategic marriage imminent, Oran sees no way out of his dilemma. Word has spread that Blackthorn possesses a remarkable gift for solving knotty problems, so the prince asks her for help. To save Oran from his treacherous nuptials, Blackthorn and Grim will need all their resources: courage, ingenuity, leaps of deduction, and more than a little magic.
Book Synopsis The Rescue by : Anne Douglas Sedgwick
Download or read book The Rescue written by Anne Douglas Sedgwick and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rescue is a tale about a serious man named Eustace Damier who receives a visit from an old family friend, Mrs. Mostyn. Damier and Mrs. Mostyn discuss wistfully the latter's late daughter and Damier's old paramour, who was beautiful but sickly. Suddenly, Damier finds out through a friend that Ms. Clara Vicaud is still alive, a stubborn survivor of terrible circumstances. Sedgwick writes a suspenseful love tale that will charm through the ages. Excerpt: "DEAR MR. DAMIER: I shall be very glad to see you tomorrow afternoon at four. I well remember Mrs. Mostyn; to hear of her from a friend of hers will be a double pleasure. Yours sincerely, CLARA VICAUD. It was like the evocation of a ghost to see this reality, emerged suddenly out of the dream-world where, for so long, he had thought of her, the young girl leaning on the chair-back in her flowing dress of silk. She was alive, and he was to see her that afternoon. Damier felt a chill overtake his eagerness. Was he not about to shatter a charming experience—one of the sweetest, most tender, most dearly absurd of his life?"
Book Synopsis The Wounded Age and Eastern Tales by : Ferit Edgü
Download or read book The Wounded Age and Eastern Tales written by Ferit Edgü and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Turkey's most celebrated writers explores themes of violence, otherness, and exile through a thrilling hybrid of poetry and prose that paints a vivid picture of Turkey's conflict-torn lands. In the two books paired here, translated into English for the first time, the great Turkish writer Ferit Edgü represents complex social and political realities with startling lyricism. The Wounded Age features a newspaper reporter from Istanbul, assigned to write about ethno-national violence in the mountains of eastern Turkey. Like the narrators in Eastern Tales, he is a stranger in a region where a buried history—the state’s violence against Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians—continues uninterrupted with the subjugation of the Kurds. Language in this place, especially the language of outsiders, cannot be trusted. In the story “Interview,” an old villager tells the narrator, “Make our photograph,” and adds, “Send us the pictures. No need to write us letters.” The minimal tales Edgü tells are vivid pictures of life in the East—a house in ruins, an empty crib, wolves howling in the hills—and transcriptions of living voices. The reporter in The Wounded Age has no illusions that his story will stop the bloodletting; instead, he goes east because he knows he must open his eyes and unstop his ears.
