Book excerpt: Simon Jeffries met Josefina Rutherford in first grade when she stole his Halloween candy — at least that's how he remembers it. Nobody disputes that he escalated the candy war that Christmas with a fiendish plot involving a hollow chocolate Santa, soapy dishwater, and a Sharpie. Twenty-some years later he's moving back to their hometown, about to deliver the final blow in a lifelong battle. Josie Rutherford loves candy, all kinds of candy, and although her tastes became more sophisticated as she reached adulthood and took over the family shop, she still feels no shame in eating a cheap bar of chocolate from the corner store. Until she learns that Caldecutt, a national manufacturer of bland chocolate and over-sweet caramels, is opening its first retail storefront in her town, right across from her store. She has no doubt that their low prices and familiar selection will drive her business of handmade, high-quality sweets to an early death. To make matters worse, Simon's back in town to oversee the opening. They'd done some horrible things to each other over the years, she can admit that, but this is far worse than even the dirtiest tricks they came up with in college. But the connection they forged through rivalry still exists, and even blossoms as they meet again. It all comes to a head on Halloween, when Josie lets a freezing Simon into her home and the world gets a bit more interesting.
Download or read book Worrorra written by Mark Clendon and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kimberley Arafuran language Worrorra was spoken traditionally on the remote coastline and precipitously beautiful hinterland between the Walcott Inlet and the Prince Regent River. The language described here is that attested by its last full speakers, Patsy Lulpunda, Amy Peters and Daisy Utemorrah. Patsy Lulpunda was a child when Europeans first entered her country in 1912, and Amy Peters and Daisy Utemorrah both grew up on the Kunmunya mission. This comprehensive and detailed grammar provides as well an historical and cultural context for a society now drastically altered. In the 1950s Worrorra people left their traditional land and from the 1970s the number of people speaking Worrorra as their first language declined dramatically. Worrorra is a highly polysynthetic language, characterised by overarching concord and a high degree of morphological fusion. Verbal semantics involve a voicing opposition and an extensive system of evidentiality-marking. Worrorra has elaborate systems of pragmatic reference, a derivational morphology that projects agreement-class concord across most lexical categories and complex predicates that incorporate one verb within another. Nouns are distributed among five genders, the intensional properties of which define dynamic oppositions between men and women on the one hand, and earth and sky on the other. This volume will be of interest to morphologists, syntacticians, semanticists, anthropologists, typologists, and readers interested in Australian language and culture generally.

He is painting a never-ending fence.Eamonn Marra’s debut novel occupies the precarious spaces in which many twenty-somethings find themselves, forced as they are to live in the present moment as late capitalism presses in from all sides. Download or read book Island Heat written by A C Stone and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Island heat: Deep Water Octopus is a satirical story that began its conception due to a paper mache octopus. From that humble beginning, began a series of running jokes, and eventually a story. A story which follows Trae, a medic in the army. Trae is a perfectionist, and seeking something that is unattainable - perfection. He wants a new unit, a new beginning, and is about to set off on his long-awaited transfer, which comes in the form of a secret location. A new beginning. Is that too much to ask for? Trae didn't think so, and despite that this move was his last opportunity, as he had been moved several times previously, he eagerly sets off on his next assignment. That is until he meets Octavius, and wherever Octavius goes, chaos is sure to follow. Island heat: Deep Water Octopus highlights a society at its best, and its worst. Octavius is Trae's nemesis in more ways than one, and uses his manipulative ways to control those around him. Only Trae is able to see through Octavius's ways, or is it more of a case that the others are complacent in the way they enable Octavius's behaviour? Follow Trae as his once in a lifetime opportunity, turns into his worst nightmare, or is it really the new beginning he was looking for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2004, the doctor told me that my tumour was an invasive ductal carcinoma that needed to be removed through a lumpectomy and radiotherapy or a mastectomy procedure. I could choose. After my mastectomy, my oncologist prescribed an aggressive chemotherapy treatment to increase the odds that this aggressive ductal carcinoma cancer would not return. His decision was founded on probability, based on statistics that indicated cancer could possibly return if I didnt do anything differently. My oncologist told me that administering prescribed chemotherapy treatment would increase my survival rate from 50 percent to 60 percent if chemotherapy were to be administered within six weeks of my mastectomy. Chemotherapy treatment filled me with fear. I chose to learn. From my greatest fear came my greatest discovery and my greatest success. I have learned that I have the resources within me to choose the quality of my life along the way. I have learned to hunt those embedded limiting beliefs that have moulded me. I have learned that I can choose to change my beliefs, to change my attitude, to choose my state, to change the stresses in my life. I have learned that I can choose to change my mind to change the energy in my body to feel better and better every day. I choose. I have been clear of cancer for eight years. As a recently qualified life coach practitioner and an NLP practitioner, I am still learning. I practice what I learn through guiding others to realise their potential. My goal is to propel them forward, guiding them to use their imagination, to go back along their timeline and discover their defining moments. I urge them to uncover their embedded beliefs and know that they can change those beliefs anytime. Thus, they can change their bodies through changing their minds.

Book Synopsis Victoria's Story - A Work in Process by : Victoria Tassone-Amato
Download or read book Victoria's Story - A Work in Process written by Victoria Tassone-Amato and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a very strict upbringing, Vittoria/Vicki/Victoria struggles to ‘fit’ in the more modern society of their new Country to which her immigrant parents brought her. It is a story as seen and experienced initially by a 5 year old, from the time she leaves her birthplace; her long sea voyage to Australia; the restrictive cultural rules she had to adhere to whilst in her ‘inner society’; and the lengths she had to go to, in order to give the appearance that she was just like the other girls in the ‘outer society’. It is a story of the ever-present anxiety of her ‘double life’ being found out; the ever-present fears of embarrassment if her ‘outer society’ friends were to find out how ‘stuck’ her family was in their old country’s cultural ideas and beliefs; and her naivety to believe that if she let her guard down she would be met with disbelief and ridicule; only to later discover that Australia was made up of ‘New’ Australians. It is a story of the ‘dating’ challenges faced by a young female growing up in such a restrictive household and the calculated risks she took, (sometimes with her co-conspirators), in order to get her parents’ permission to go out with her friends. It is a story of learning from her parents to appreciate and be thankful for what she had; and that her trait of having compassion for others was only possible because of the love and family values that were instilled in her. It is a story of the human spirit’s great capacity to heal the disappointments; hurt and betrayal; which, in turn, enables one to forgive. Of the strong faith one needs to possess in order to accept the physical and emotional pain with which one is afflicted in life. And of the great strength with which one is graced in order to cope when in such pain. But mostly, it is a story of the comradery which existed between the families during that era. They relied on and helped one another with everything. They laughed, cried and shared with one another. There was a sense of belonging, closeness and security that seems to be missing in the lives of so many of our young people today.
