Book excerpt: Helena, grand dame of the Melbourne and Sydney theatre scene, thinks she has settled nicely into a restful performance regime of comedy classics in judiciously subsidised spaces. When her somewhat intense undergraduate daughter, Emmeline, hurls an asylum seeker/detention centre drama at her, Helena's professional certainties are shaken not so much by the play's contents as by its lead actor, Violet. A student of Australian theatre, Violet has chosen Helena to be her mentor and she sets about procuring her idol with disturbing intensity. Besieged and exhausted by the emotional demands of these two passionate young women, Helena finds herself facing a choice between biting on the burnt chop of desire and doing something really reprehensible.

Poetry explains for you, loves for you, and it wishes and hopes for you. It can move mountains or lock doors. Poetry is fascination, liberation, annihilation, consolation, elation, aggravation, jubilation, communication, and humiliation. It can be the dance that never ends. It feels for you out loud. Poetry is you exclamation point! Poetry can be the beginning or the ending, and everything in between. Cynthia Forcey

Book excerpt: When internationally renowned and self-confessed soloist Rachael Marlin comes to live with Holly and James in their Salon d'Art, everyone falls madly in love with her. Only Joy, a young doctor, sounds a note of caution when she sees Rachael's effect on her fiancé, Matthew, and her potential to turn their little Salon d'Art into a large theatre of the absurd. As Joy anticipates, when Rachael's affections and creative energies turn closer towards her instrument than to her hosts, she reveals herself to be not quite the promised protégé. Spurred on by Holly, all have to work quickly to meet the danger and construct a ménage in which art and, above all, honour can be satisfied.

While their husbands self-sacrificingly remain at work in town, Sarahand her sister-in-law Jennifer spend yet another summer by the sea, watching the children in the deep water and trying to avoid the annual judgement-by-mother-in-law at the hands of the indomitable Alice. Secret relief comes for Jennifer when she meets an older man, Henry, who listens to her and provides an occasional oasis of sanity in the midst of her holiday madness. At the same time, Sarah is determined to put their family back on track by smartening up its image and exposing its atavistic ills to the disinfectant of sunlight and the open air. When Henry is discovered to be at the centre of this family’s business, the dynamic daughters-in-law have to stand firm and defy Alice, who guards their tragedy with all the calmness of the self-justified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A uniquely personal meditation on Britain's gulls by one of today's leading wildlife writers From a distance, gulls are beautiful symbols of freedom over the oceanic wilderness. Up close, however, they can be loud, aggressive and even violent. Yet gulls fascinate birdwatchers, and seafarers regard them with respect and affection. The Gull Next Door explores the natural history of gulls and their complicated relationship with humans. Marianne Taylor grew up in an English seaside town where gulls are ever present. Today, she is a passionate advocate for these underappreciated birds. In this book, Taylor looks at the different gull species and sheds light on all aspects of the lives of gulls—how they find food, raise families, socialize and migrate across sea, coastland and countryside. She discusses the herring gull, Britain's best-known and most persecuted gull species, whose numbers are declining at an alarming rate. She looks at gulls in legend, fiction and popular culture, and explains what we can do to protect gull populations around the world. The Gull Next Door reveals deeper truths about these remarkable birds. They are thinkers and innovators, devoted partners and parents. They lead long lives and often indulge their powerful drive to explore and travel. But for all these natural gifts, many gull species are struggling to survive in the wild places they naturally inhabit, which is why they are now exploiting the opportunities of human habitats. This book shows how we might live more harmoniously with these majestic yet misunderstood birds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Praise of Nahum Tate covers a wide range of reading experiences including poetry, short stories, reviews and politics. It features an eclectic poetry collection, ranging from the muscular, old-fashioned formality of ‘Old Peg Remembers,’ a sonnet on the story of Pegasus and Bellerophon, to relaxed, free verse observations of nature and studies of family life. ‘Folded,’ is a bitter-sweet portrait of a family coping with divorce. ‘The Commonwealth Of Crows’ is a sequence of sixteen poems, illuminated by Julie Foley’s beautiful artwork, which looks at corvids from many different angles. The short stories are interwoven with humour and dark drama, and even explore magical realism in ‘The Clock Of Real Time.’ The book also features an exclusive interview with Robin Williamson, Scottish musician, singer, songwriter and storyteller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A red color sun rose lazily out from the Eastern horizon, casting its early dim light upon the calm waters of the ocean Bay marking the beginning of a new summer morning. The warm sun rays slowly mixed with the cool air abandoned from the night before, inspiring a gentle breeze to start blowing towards the land. Seamore, a young seagull, had his head tucked under his warm wing when he first felt the gentle sea-breeze ruffling his feathers. He sleepily peeked out from under his wing at the bright new morning sun and thought to himself, "How good it feels to be awakened by a gentle warm breeze," comparing his thought and memory to some of the cold winter mornings he had experienced in the past. Seamore was perched on the top of an old wooded dock piling where seagulls normally stand or 'roost' when sleeping, he had one of his legs tucked up and pressed against his warm body to protect it from the chilly night air. He then slowly stood up from his perch, shook himself vigorously, ruffling his feathers, stretched his wings out widely, and then gave a loud screeching "SQUACK!" sound from deep within his throat which broke the morning silence, and startled some seagulls across the bay. Seamore was like all the other seagulls you may have seen at the beach. He flew around the Bay most of the day searching for things to eat. But, there was one thing that made Seamore very different from all the other seagulls. Seamore WAS AFRAID OF THE WATER!!!

Book excerpt: Nathan Grayson, Blake Coleman, and Justin Bronson are three close friends, living together in a three bedroom home in a quiet Bay Area town. For the most part, they lead relatively normal lives, although each of them possesses a special skill: Nathan can see glimpses of the future and past, Blake can read minds, and Justin can move objects by thought. They have managed to keep these abilities hidden, until a sudden incident arises that threatens their safety. Nearly one year after their break-up, Nathan has a premonition that he will receive a call from his former boyfriend, Russell, whom he has not heard from in months. His prediction proves to be accurate, as Russell calls and asks for aid in finding his current lover, Andrew, who has mysteriously vanished. Still healing from the emotional wounds from their failed relationship, Nathan reluctantly agrees to use his psychic abilities to help Russell, against the wishes of Blake and Justin, who doubts Russell's motives. As Nathan delves deeper into the investigation of Andrew's disappearance, he and his friends unwittingly become the target of a malevolent, relentless supernatural force that weaves itself into their minds, and releases an explosion of terror that will jeopardize their friendship, their sanity, and their lives..
