Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extremism, now more widely termed, terrorism, is on the lips of every human being, on the front pages of the world's newspapers everyday and on the screens of news media every moment. But we still long for love and love still thrives. This poetic novel by M.Pothen plunges us directly into the forests, paddy fields and farm lands and leads us through the hilltops, narrow paths, junctions and village homes of the Indian State, Kerala, from the 1960s to the 1980s, describes the delicate and soulful awakening of love in two lives, and has roots in ancient Indian tradition. Can you forgive a terrorist, if he has participated in the murder of your own father? Like the heroine, Ahalya, we live in complicated times, where black and white give way to shades of gray, and in Where Monsoon Never Ends, we hold our breath to witness which will win the battle, love or hate? Like the hero, Arjunan, along with the numerous village characters, we are fighting to win that battle within ourselves. M. Pothen was raised in a village in Kerala, the tiny state in the extreme southern portion of India. Gifted by nature's bliss, surrounded by coconut groves, paddy fields, green hills, valleys, rivers, canals, backwaters, and the never ending monsoons, Kerala embodies the term, "God's own country." Born in 1959 as the youngest and only brother of four sisters, Pothen started writing poems at 18. Many of his poems in his mother tongue have been published and broadcast over local radio stations. Raised by his father, a schoolteacher who left to eternity few years back and mother, who survives, Pothen is a member of the Indian Orthodox Christian Community. After completing his bachelor's degree in Kerala, he started a career as an accountant in the United Arab Emirates in 1985. A father of two boys aged 19 and 21, now he lives in Sharjah, U.A.E and works as chief accountant in a private firm. He is part of the many millions of Overseas Indians for the last 25 years.

Book excerpt: Sherrill Grace shows how Malcolm Lowry's theme of a cyclical pattern of initiation, repeated ordeals with failure and retreat, followed by success and development, which in turn gave way to fresh defeat, influenced the structure, narrative style, and the symbolic pattern in his writing. The author also includes an appendix in which she examines the elements of Conrad Aiken's fiction and prose that had a significant impact on Lowry's work.

Book excerpt: Damon Carawell still can’t forgive his wife. Ten years after her mistake, the 33-year-old man continues to overshadow Noel with his ministry in Ohio. And now, with Noel needing Damon more than ever, the opportunity he’s dreamed about has finally arrived. His father’s church in Jaipur, India has disappeared after ministering to the workers of a local drug field. But it isn’t Damon’s parents, who he hasn’t spoken to in years, or even their missing congregation that’s pulling him to India. It’s not the idea of saving anyone Damon’s truly worried about. It’s the idea of who he will be saving them from. Vedic Vane isn’t a myth. He’s real, and has been hired to imprison the Jaipur Church. But the task proves troubling to the Christian killer from the start, as he’s shockingly overcome with conviction. And just as God is about to save Vedic, Damon’s pride launches him into the villain’s changing life, conflicting with the progress God has started. A marriage, a church, and a soul must be saved. And the only man who can help them all has to choose one. This is the story of a hero, a villain, and the world their fears created.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encounter Never Ends offers a thoughtful meditation on the relationship between fieldwork and anthropological knowledge through the analysis of Tamil ritual practice in a South Indian village. Isabelle Clark-Decès revisits field notes taken more than fifteen years earlier, and reveals what she intended when she took the notes, what she came to understand and record, and why she proceeded to ignore her ethnography until recently. Returning to these notes with fresh eyes and matured experience, Clark-Decès gains insight into Tamil rural society that complicates anthropological analyses of the Indian village. She realizes that the village she lived in was neither a community nor a "system" but rather a loose hodgepodge of caste groups and advises that the social order is not necessarily the best place to start looking for important insights into the ways in which cultures construe ritual action. Drawing on the recent work of Don Handelman to discuss the two Tamil ritual complexes recovered from her field notes, a drought "removal" ritual and a post-funeral ceremony, the author shows how they articulate complex notions regarding knowledge, reflexivity, and action. Throughout, the author shares her own story, including the mixture of frustration and fascination she felt while conducting fieldwork, illustrating how extraordinarily difficult ethnographic description is.

Book excerpt: More than three decades after the final withdrawal of American troops from Southeast Asia, the legacy of the Vietnam War continues to influence political, military, and cultural discourse. Journalists, politicians, scholars, pundits, and others have used the conflict to analyze each of America's subsequent military engagements. Many Americans have observed that Vietnam-era terms such as "cut and run," "quagmire," and "hearts and minds" are ubiquitous once again as comparisons between U.S. involvement in Iraq and in Vietnam seem increasingly appropriate. Because of its persistent significance, the Vietnam War era continues to inspire vibrant historical inquiry. The eminent scholars featured in The War That Never Ends offer fresh and insightful perspectives on the continuing relevance of the Vietnam War, from the homefront to "humping in the boonies," and from the great halls of political authority to the gritty hotbeds of oppositional activism. The contributors assert that the Vietnam War is central to understanding the politics of the Cold War, the social movements of the late twentieth century, the lasting effects of colonialism, the current direction of American foreign policy, and the ongoing economic development in Southeast Asia. The seventeen essays break new ground on questions relating to gender, religion, ideology, strategy, and public opinion, and the book gives equal emphasis to Vietnamese and American perspectives on the grueling conflict. The contributors examine such phenomena as the role of women in revolutionary organizations, the peace movements inspired by Buddhism, and Ho Chi Minh's successful adaptation of Marxism to local cultures. The War That Never Ends explores both the antiwar movement and the experiences of infantrymen on the front lines of battle, as well as the media's controversial coverage of America's involvement in the war. The War That Never Ends sheds new light on the evolving historical meanings of the Vietnam War, its enduring influence, and its potential to influence future political and military decision-making, in times of peace as well as war.

Book excerpt: Edie is a barmaid at The Tup in the small town of Ravenglass. So far, so normal. But when she is caught in a freak earthquake she subsequently develops "The Eye"--a power that allows her glimpses of other worlds and strange events. At first Edie passes her visions off as nightmares, but when a corpse is found, murdered, she realises that she has seen this death before, and that her visions are not imaginary, but real. Mankind had better hope that Edie finds a solution to the murders soon, because it's more than just the influence of The Eye that has entered the world. A power far more malevolent has been released, and that power is hungry for death.

Book excerpt: From the bubonic plague to theoretical pathogens on other worlds, a sweeping look at the past, present, and future of mass infections—and how we battle them. In this panoramic and up-to-date account, we learn how the Black Death, smallpox, the 1918 influenza pandemic, and other great epidemics have not only led to enormous suffering and mass death but have also contributed to the fall of empires and changed the course of history. We also discover how new infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 emerge—and how we wage war against them. Humanity has struck back at the microbes: antibiotics and new vaccines have saved millions of lives. But the battle with these relentless, silent enemies is far from won. We face increasing threats from new and unavoidable pandemics, antibiotic resistance, and even potential extraterrestrial microbes. Duel Without End is a fascinating journey through the long history of infection, from the dawn of life to humanity’s future exploration of deep space.
