Book excerpt: Down Farm Road 308, an hour's drive south of Dallas, amidst sprawling fields of cotton lies a small community--Penelope, Texas (population 211). Here, where the only thriving businesses are the granary and the post office, unless you count the soft-drink machine in front of the fire station, two-time Edgar Award-winning writer Carlton Stowers discovered a special town that came together, not only to support their six-man highschool football team--the Penelope Wolverines--through thick and a lot of thin, but also, and more importantly, each other. Where Dreams Die Hard is a warm and revealing portrait of the American heartland--and of one small town's love affair with the team that unites it. "Through his unforgettable depiction of innocence, goodness, loyalty, and friendship...Carlton Stowers gives us a moving portrait of a community that, in the words of one of the Penelope faithful, is like 'stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting.'" (Billie Letts, author of Where the Heart Is) "High school football in Texas is both sport and religion, and Stowers brilliantly brings this to light in Where Dreams Die Hard." (Jim Dent, author of The Junction Boys)

I had been sleeping next to her and waking up at every little noise. She went into the toilet to relieve herself and had a heart attack while on the commode. I heard her fall and called her, but there was no answer. Jumping up, I rushed to her. She had fallen against the tub, gashing her head, and was bleeding heavily. I couldn't get her to wake up or completely stop the bleeding and had to leave her to call the emergency squad. After rushing back to her, I managed to stop the bleeding and held her in my arms, trying to help as much as I could. The emergency team still didn't come, so I called again, rushed back, and held her some more. I reminded her she had said she wouldn't leave me and begged her to hang on. She told me she saw the most beautiful white light she had ever seen and had to go to it. I could not see it and was devastated to think that she was dying. Much more recently, as I have read the Bible and discussed it with my pastor, I have learned that this was the light of Jesus she could see, because she was seeing in the spirit. I find it very comforting to know that she was going to be with him. Just after she stopped breathing, they arrived at the door and resuscitated her. She was breathing as we got to the hospital. However, shortly after she arrived in the emergency room, the doctor came to tell me that she was dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long, dark history of political violence in the United States Violence has been employed to achieve political objectives throughout history. Taking the life of a perceived enemy is as old as mankind. Antiquity is filled with examples of political murders, such as when Julius Caesar was felled by assassins in 44 BCE. While assassinations and assassination attempts are not unique to the American way of life, denizens of other nations sometimes look upon the US as populated by reckless cowboys owing to a “Wild West” attitude about violence, especially episodes involving guns. In this book, J. Michael Martinez focuses on assassinations and attempts in the American republic. Nine American presidents—Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan—have been the targets of assassins. President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt was also a target shortly before he was sworn into office in 1933. Moreover, three presidential candidates—Theodore Roosevelt, Robert F. Kennedy, and George Wallace—were shot by assailants. In addition to presidents and candidates for the presidency, eight governors, seven U.S. senators, nine U.S. House members, eleven mayors, seventeen state legislators, and eleven judges have been victims of political violence. Not all political assassinations involve elected officials. Some of those targeted, such as Joseph Smith, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., were public figures who influenced political issues. But their cases are instructive because of their connection to, and influence on, the political process. No other nation with a population of over 50 million people has witnessed as many political assassinations or attempts. These violent episodes trigger a series of important questions. First, why has the United States—a country constructed on a bedrock of the rule of law and firmly committed to due process—been so susceptible to political violence? Martinez addresses these questions as he examines twenty-five instances of violence against elected officials and public figures in American history.

Book excerpt: High atop a Los Angeles skyscraper, an office Christmas party turns into a deadly cage-match between a lone New York City cop and a gang of international terrorists. Every action fan knows it could only be the explosive big-screen blockbuster Die Hard. But before Bruce Willis blew away audiences as unstoppable hero John McClane, author Roderick Thorp knocked out thriller readers with the bestseller that started it all. A dozen heavily armed terrorists have taken hostages, issued demands, and promised bloodshed — all according to plan. But they haven’t counted on a death-defying, one-man cavalry with no shoes, no backup, and no intention of going down easily. As hot-headed cops swarm outside, and cold-blooded killers wield machine guns and rocket launchers inside, the stage is set for the ultimate showdown between anti-hero and uber-villains. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good fight... to the death. Ho ho ho!

Book excerpt: This book is the story of three men who, as friends and opponents, fought the battles of the idealistic '60s. Allard Lowenstein, quintessential liberal and architect of the celebrated "Dump Johnson" campaign, Dennis Sweeney, one-time protege of Lowenstein's and heroic figure in the Mississippi civil rights struggle, and author Harris, also a Lowenstein protege as well as draft-resisting Stanford student body president, made up the distinctive strands of that long-ago time when dreams of a better world and the notion that one person could make a difference moved a generation to take matters into its own hands. On March 14, 1980, in the grip of a paranoid schizophrenic fantasy, Sweeney walked into Lowenstein's Manhattan law office and shot his former mentor to death. This murder prompted Harris to look back across the years, to trace the scars of the battles, to remember who they had all been and how it had come to such an end. - Back cover.

Book excerpt: Your dreams belong to you. Theyre private, and no one needs to know what happens in them. But what if someone could invade your dreams? And once in, what if that someone could control what happens while you lie there, powerless to affect the outcome? Dylan Ward can do that. Struggling to make partner in a law firm and finding it hard to hold on to a romantic relationship, his nightly dreams become his escape into a world that seems far happier than his real one. When he learns about the phenomenon of lucid dreaming, where the sleeping person is actually conscious of the events in the dream, he immerses himself in an attempt to master it. Soon his nights are filled with fun and adventure, where he has the power to control events and find temporary relief from his mundane life. That relief soon pales when he reads an old legend about dream sharing that leads him to the idea of entering and controlling the dreams of others. What starts out as an interesting experiment soon turns into an obsession of hacking into the dreams of the people in his life. He begins a strange quest for vengeance, power, love, and all the things that are missing from his real world. But its when he devises a way to teach other people how to invade dreams that the dangers of his obsession become frighteningly clear. The Dream Hacker moves between imagination and reality, along the hazy sleeping path that everyone travels but cant really navigate. Mixing equal parts of dark humor and the angst of modern culture, the story challenges our notions of understanding what is real and asks just how far a person will go to change the course of his life.
