Download or read book Ancient Evenings written by Norman Mailer and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norman Mailer’s dazzlingly rich, deeply evocative novel of ancient Egypt breathes life into the figures of a lost era: the eighteenth-dynasty Pharaoh Rameses and his wife, Queen Nefertiti; Menenhetet, their creature, lover, and victim; and the gods and mortals that surround them in intimate and telepathic communion. Mailer’s reincarnated protagonist is carried through the exquisite gardens of the royal harem, along the majestic flow of the Nile, and into the terrifying clash of battle. An extraordinary work of inventiveness, Ancient Evenings lives on in the mind long after the last page has been turned. Praise for Ancient Evenings “Astounding, beautifully written . . . a leap of imagination that crosses three millennia to Pharaonic Egypt.”—USA Today “Mailer makes a miraculous present out of age-deep memories, bringing to life the rhythms, the images, the sensuousness of a lost time.”—The New York Times “Mailer’s Egypt is a haunting and magical place. . . . The reader wallows in the scope, depth, the sheer magnitude and—yes—the fertility of his imagination.”—The Washington Post Book World “An enormous pyramid of a novel [reminiscent of] Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow and Carlos Fuentes’s Terra Nostra.”—Los Angeles Herald Examiner Praise for Norman Mailer “[Norman Mailer] loomed over American letters longer and larger than any other writer of his generation.”—The New York Times “A writer of the greatest and most reckless talent.”—The New Yorker “Mailer is indispensable, an American treasure.”—The Washington Post “A devastatingly alive and original creative mind.”—Life “Mailer is fierce, courageous, and reckless and nearly everything he writes has sections of headlong brilliance.”—The New York Review of Books “The largest mind and imagination [in modern] American literature . . . Unlike just about every American writer since Henry James, Mailer has managed to grow and become richer in wisdom with each new book.”—Chicago Tribune “Mailer is a master of his craft. His language carries you through the story like a leaf on a stream.”—The Cincinnati Post
Download or read book The Luminaries written by Eleanor Catton and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winner of the Man Booker Prize, this "expertly written, perfectly constructed" bestseller (The Guardian) is now a Starz miniseries. It is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to stake his claim in New Zealand's booming gold rush. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: a wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous cache of gold has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely ornate as the night sky. Richly evoking a mid-nineteenth-century world of shipping, banking, and gold rush boom and bust, The Luminaries is at once a fiendishly clever ghost story, a gripping page-turner, and a thrilling novelistic achievement. It richly confirms that Eleanor Catton is one of the brightest stars in the international literary firmament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Purple Moor!’ The art teacher’s livid voice resonates. Rushali watches her mother cringe, called into the principal's office again; but thankfully, her father, Dev Pillay chooses to see her painting as eclectic and a reflection of the caring person she is. When Rushali is just seventeen, her father, the one person who understood her, suddenly passes away. Now Rushali must find her path from the chaos of nonconformity she built for herself. A semblance of calm pervades in her relationship with her mother until Mohan arrives on the scene. At forty-seven, the shackles are unbearable, judged repeatedly in parameters that do not fit her persona. Then, so unexpectedly, Rushali is free! But is this the freedom she sought? What tryst of fate made her paint the moor purple? Do such moors exist?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traitor’s Den was meant to be a prison. A punishment. A hellhole my daddy could never escape. Over the decades, however, hundreds of us have found a way to make it our home. We’ve learned to deal with the many bumps along the way with colorful cussing and a dash of humor—often roused by one too many at the saloon—and we’ve embraced the spell that turns us all into honky-tonk cowgirls and -boys. The Den might be more bizarre magical theme park than anything else, but hey, it’s ours. What’s ours, we Denners protect. To the death. We might have better things to do than showing up to work on time, but tell us there’s a shootout? Darn tootin’, we’ll be there. With bells on. Whatever cray-cray happens in our town, we’ll find a way to fix it—or at least, shoot it till it’s as fixed as it gets. But what in Sam Hill are we supposed to do with a hole in the sky, where a hole sure as shitfire doesn’t belong, that’s letting dragons into our no-exit portal town? I’m not talking cute baby dragons like Sawyer Zane. Full grown, mean as sin, adult dragons. Who are on this one-way trip to kill lucky ol’ me. Just dandy. Since there’s nowhere to run, we do what we do best: we fight. One way or another, there can only be one sheriff in town. When the dust settles, I’m betting it will be me. I’m hoping, anyhow, because I’m all in. And so is everyone I love, including the gorgeous half vampire and two hunky shifters who’ve gone ahead and claimed me. As they say, where there’s smoke there’s fire, and honey, in Traitor’s Den, something’s always smokin’ hot. * This grand finale of the Six Shooter and a Shifter series is 91,000 words long, bringing the series to a satisfying happily-ever-after conclusion.
