Book excerpt: Though Mountains Crumble, Hope Is Not Buried Enjoy a series of 6 exciting novels featuring historic disasters that transformed landscapes and multiple lives. Whether by nature or by man, these disasters changed history and were a day to be remembered. Discipline and rules are the foundation on which Samantha Ingles has built her life—the life of a spinster schoolteacher in a small mining town in the Canadian Rockies. All that crumbles from her grasp when part of a mountain crashes down on their community. Constable David Harty has little patience for the strict schoolmarm but has no choice but to leave his three young nieces in her care while he tries to discover the fate of his brother. Already, the girls have lost their mother and brothers to the landslide and require comfort and love while they await the fate of their father, possibly buried in the coal mine. With the mountain looming over their heads threatening more lives, and the town scrambling to save who they can from the rubble, can hearts find healing—both for their own sakes and the children in their care? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Self-Disclosure of God offers the most detailed presentation to date in any Western language of the basic teachings of Islam's greatest mystical philosopher and theologian. It represents a major step forward in making available to the Western reading public the enormous riches of Islamic teachings in the fields of cosmology, mystical philosophy, theology, and spirituality. The Self-Disclosure of God continues the author's investigations of the world view of Ibn al-ʿArabī, the greatest theoretician of Sufism and the "seal of the Muhammadan saints." The book is divided into three parts, dealing with the relation between God and the cosmos, the structure of the cosmos, and the nature of the human soul. A long introduction orients the reader and discusses a few of the difficulties faced by Ibn al-ʿArabī's interpreters. Like Chittick's earlier work, The Sufi Path of Knowledge, this book is based primarily on Ibn al-ʿArabī's monumental work, al-Futūḥāt al-Makkīyah "The Meccan Openings." More than one hundred complete chapters and subsections are translated, not to mention shorter passages that help put the longer discussions in context. There are detailed indices of sources, Koranic verses and hadiths. The book's index of technical terminology will be an indispensable reference for all those wishing to delve more deeply into the use of language in Islamic thought in general and Sufism in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kingdom of Gantala, steeped in tradition, has untapped wealth of natural resources. Hopeful for a better life, the Kingdom looks to ‘strangers’ for progress. Such progress inevitably creates a wealth of problems, problems which become so chronic that they require nothing short of a miracle as a cure. The Crumbling Heritage is a powerful novel that explores the catastrophic effect of colonialism, where changing customs and traditions in quest of modernisation results in breakdown of the moral, social, economic, and political structures. “A change is good if it provides avenues for human progress for a better life but not human destruction of a good life.” Cleverly interweaving fact with fiction, R. Yelbeck weaves a tale rich in political and historical overtones, a subtle reminder that there will ultimately be a day of retribution! It is an absorbing story which deals with a subject whose impact still reverberates in the world today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book 1 (Plough) followed an exiled individuals search for inner coherence in an incoherent and violent world more than 1000 years ago. Book 2 (Growth) witnessed the establishment of a sustainable harmony between a community and the land upon which they had lived for three or four centuries but within and beyond which community were the seeds of its own decay. Book 3 (Harvest) shows a far more developed and structured society, which comprises several clear levels, from the rulers and the priesthood who impose order, through the artists, artisans, and peasants, down to the untouchables, the people of the mud, about whom it is forbidden to even speak. The story follows three main characters: Kimi, the principal courtesan of the ruler; Nohbul, the ferryman, and his family who had fallen from grace and seek to re-establish themselves in a state of grace; and Seth, a mute. The society comes under threat from external, and foreign, influences and from the volcano, The Blameless, in the shadow of which the society had evolved. The story is told on five levels, all but the final chapter having five parts. They each start with a section called The Names, on historical martyrs who are not well known, evidence of the lost tribes of Israel and the tribes of the Roma, who between them represent the two major diaspora in the history of human society. This is followed by a poem, and then the story of one of each of twenty-six masks which were part of the dome of a grand building buried perhaps centuries earlier, after a convulsion of the earth. There is then an Anecdote about events that may or may not concern residents of the society at the heart of the book, and, finally the story itself. Each of these levels can be read as a sequence in themselves or in the order in which they are presented in the book. Harvest takes place along the river which was a mountain spring in Book 1 and a vital stream in Book 2.

Book excerpt: Hector Terries, Distinguished Professor of History and a world famous, if controversial, figure in his field, arrives in Athens from Australia in 1985 hoping to discover what had happened to his former fiancée, Alathea, who had inexplicably disappeared without a trace from the city twenty-four years earlier. Though a convinced rationalist and materialist, he comes to feel that he is being haunted by the ghost of the missing woman, whose phantom he encounters on several occasions. Researching Alathea's disappearance, Hector becomes unwittingly involved in terrorist violence, official corruption, multiple murders, and romantic entanglements, as well as highly disquieting psychic phenomena, eventually uncovering hidden truths so devastating that his hitherto dogmatic scientism is shaken, leaving him transformed by the experience. He finally realises that though his misfortunes seem to stem from the chaotic and vicious era in which he is living, he has in fact been condemned from birth to play a fated role in a contemporary Greek tragedy, with its roots stretching back into a far-distant past.
