Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the far future, Earth is about to be swallowed by a black hole in this sweeping SF epic from one of the masters of the genre. In a time so far from our own that we cannot comprehend it, humanity has spread amongst the stars and changed in more ways than we can count. But they have never forgotten their birthplace - Earth. But now Earth stands on the brink of catastrophe, at risk of being swallowed by a black hole. One man, Hanosz Prime, ruler of his world, is determined to visit Earth before it is destroyed. His abdication from his throne and his wanderlust are to prove the beginning of a much longer journey - one that will see him fall in love, meet the Oracles of Earth and perhaps, if he is very lucky, provide a means to save the cradle of humanity. Originally started by Robert Silverberg more than 20 years ago but never completed, Hanosz's story is taken up by Alvaro Zinos-Amaro. Silverberg hand-picked Zinos-Amaro to complete the book, and provided notes and guidance. The result is a remarkable collaboration between one of the masters of SF and one of the most exciting new voices in the genre.

Book excerpt: The study of quantum fluids, stimulated by the discovery of superfluidity in liquid helium, has experienced renewed interest after the observation of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in ultra-cold atomic gases and the observation a new type of quantum fluid with specific characteristics derived from its intrinsic out-of-equilibrium nature. The main objective of this book is to take a snapshot of the state-of-the-art of this fast moving field with a special emphasis on the hot topics and new trends. Bringing together the most active specialists of the two areas (atomic and polaritonic quantum fluids), we expect that this book will facilitate the exchange and the collaboration between these two communities working on subjects with very strong analogies.

Book excerpt: This thesis provides deep insights into currently controversial questions in laser filamentation, a highly complex phenomenon involving nonlinear optical effects and plasma physics. First, based on the concrete picture of a femtosecond laser beam which self-pinches its radial intensity distribution, the thesis delivers a novel explanation for the remarkable and previously unexplained phenomenon of pulse self-compression in filaments. Moreover, the work addresses the impact of a non-adiabatic change of both nonlinearity and dispersion on such an intense femtosecond pulse transiting from a gaseous dielectric material to a solid one. Finally, and probably most importantly, the author presents a simple and highly practical theoretical approach for quantitatively estimating the influence of higher-order nonlinear optical effects in optics. These results shed new light on recent experimental observations, which are still hotly debated and may completely change our understanding of filamentation, causing a paradigm change concerning the role of higher-order nonlinearities in optics.

Book excerpt: This book, like the first and second editions, addresses the fundamental principles of interaction between radiation and matter and the principles of particle detection and detectors in a wide scope of fields, from low to high energy, including space physics and medical environment. It provides abundant information about the processes of electromagnetic and hadronic energy deposition in matter, detecting systems, performance of detectors and their optimization. The third edition includes additional material covering, for instance: mechanisms of energy loss like the inverse Compton scattering, corrections due to the Landau?Pomeranchuk?Migdal effect, an extended relativistic treatment of nucleus?nucleus screened Coulomb scattering, and transport of charged particles inside the heliosphere. Furthermore, the displacement damage (NIEL) in semiconductors has been revisited to account for recent experimental data and more comprehensive comparisons with results previously obtained. This book will be of great use to graduate students and final-year undergraduates as a reference and supplement for courses in particle, astroparticle, space physics and instrumentation. A part of the book is directed toward courses in medical physics. The book can also be used by researchers in experimental particle physics at low, medium, and high energy who are dealing with instrumentation.

THE CHURCH THINKS THAT PEOPLE WILL BE RAPTURED-TAKEN TO HEAVEN-THEN THE ANTICHRIST WILL TAKE OVER AND TORTURE CHRISTIANS. THAT IS THE FALSE PROPHECY JESUS WARNED US ABOUT-FALSE PROPHETS LIKE THE "LEFT BEHIND SERIES" DOCTRINE HAVE CONFUSED THE CHURCH. CHAPTER 22 ISAIAH SAYS THAT THE VISIONS OF THE SECOND COMING WILL BE OBSCURE TO THEOLOGIANS, ALSO ISAIAH 64:3 SAYS, GOD DID THINGS AT THE SECOND COMING THAT WE DID NOT LOOK FORWARD TO. WE MISUNDERSTOOD. THAT PROPHECY HAS COME TRUE, THATS WHY THE CHURCH IS CONFUSED. THE TRUTH IS TAT THERE IS A LONG PAUSE BETWEEN CHPT 12 REVELATION AND CHAPTER 13 REVELATION. BILLIONS OF YEARS. AS THE MESSENGER OF ISAIAH CHPT 14, I HAVE UNRAVELED FOR THE CHURCH THE MYSTERY OF THE SECOND COMING. SATAN LIED TO US-THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE RAPTURE. THE "TAKEN" ARE THE BAD PEOPLE, NOT THE GOOD. THEY WILL GO TO HELL. REVELATION CHPT 9 AND PSALM 110:6 SAYS SO. READ THIS BOOK TO FIND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SECOND COMING.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to give a discussion of the physics and current and potential applications of the self-focusing of an intense femtosecond laser pulse in a tra- parent medium. Although self-focusing is an old subject of nonlinear optics, the consequence of self-focusing of intense femtosecond laser pulses is totally new and unexpected. Thus, new phenomena are observed, such as long range lam- tation, intensity clamping, white light laser pulse, self-spatial ltering, self-group phase locking, self-pulse compression, clean nonlinear uorescence, and so on. Long range propagation at high intensity, which is seemingly against the law of diffraction, is probably one of the most exciting consequences of this new sub- eld of nonlinear optics. Because the intensity inside the lament core is high, new ways of doing nonlinear optics inside the lament become possible. We call this lamentation nonlinear optics. We shall describe the generation of pulses at other wavelengths in the visible and ultraviolet (UV) starting from the near infrared pump pulse at 800 nm through four-wave-mixing and third harmonic generation, all in gases. Remotely sensing uorescence from the fragments of chemical and biological agents in all forms, gaseous, aerosol or solid, inside the laments in air is demonstrated in the labo- tory. The results will be shown in the last part of the book. Through analyzing the uorescence of gas molecules inside the lament, an unexpected physical process pertaining to the interaction of synchrotron radiation with molecules is observed.

This anthology, with an introduction by Robert Silverberg, offers a sweeping survey of robots as depicted throughout literature. Since The Iliad—in which we are shown golden statues built by Hephaestus “with minds and wisdoms”—humans have been fascinated by the idea of artificial life. From the Argonautica to the medieval Jewish legend of the Golem and Ambrose Bierce’s tale of a chess-playing robot, the idea of what robots are—and who creates them—can be drastically different. This book collects a broad selection of short stories from celebrated authors such as Philip K. Dick, Seanan McGuire, Roger Zelazny, Connie Willis, and many more. Robots through the Ages not only celebrates the history of robots and the genre of science fiction, but the dauntless nature of human ingenuity.

Book excerpt: 2020 Space Hipsters Prize for Best Book in Astronomy, Space Exploration, or Space History Come Fly with Us is the story of an elite group of space travelers who flew as members of many space shuttle crews from pre-Challenger days to Columbia in 2003. Not part of the regular NASA astronaut corps, these professionals known as "payload specialists" came from a wide variety of backgrounds and were chosen for an equally wide variety of scientific, political, and national security reasons. Melvin Croft and John Youskauskas focus on this special fraternity of spacefarers and their individual reflections on living and working in space. Relatively unknown to the public and often flying only single missions, these payload specialists give the reader an unusual perspective on the experience of human spaceflight. The authors also bring to light NASA's struggle to integrate the wide-ranging personalities and professions of these men and women into the professional astronaut ranks. While Come Fly with Us relates the experiences of the payload specialists up to and including the Challenger tragedy, the authors also detail the later high-profile flights of a select few, including Barbara Morgan, John Glenn (who returned to space at the age of seventy-seven), and Ilan Ramon of Israel aboard Columbia on its final, fatal flight, STS-107.
