Book Synopsis British and Irish Paintings in Public Collections by : Christopher Wright
Download or read book British and Irish Paintings in Public Collections written by Christopher Wright and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets a new standard as a work of reference. It covers British and Irish art in public collections from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the end of the nineteenth, and it encompasses nearly 9,000 painters and 90,000 paintings in more than 1,700 separate collections. The book includes as well pictures that are now lost, some as a consequence of the Second World War and others because of de-accessioning, mostly from 1950 to about 1975 when Victorian art was out of fashion. By listing many tens of thousands of previously unpublished works, including around 13,000 which do not yet have any form of attribution, this book becomes a unique and indispensable work of reference, one that will transform the study of British and Irish painting.

Book Synopsis Sacred Signs in Reformation Scotland by : Stephen Mark Holmes
Download or read book Sacred Signs in Reformation Scotland written by Stephen Mark Holmes and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Signs in Reformation Scotland is the first study of how public worship was interpreted in Renaissance Scotland and offers a radically new way of understanding the Scottish Reformation. It first defines the history and method of 'liturgical interpretation' (using the methods of medieval Biblical exegesis to explain worship), then shows why it was central to medieval and early modern Western European religious culture. The rest of the book uses Scotland as a case study for a multidisciplinary investigation of the place of liturgical interpretation in this culture. Stephen Mark Holmes uses the methods of 'book history' to discover the place of liturgical interpretation in education, sermons and pastoral practice and also investigates its impact on material culture, especially church buildings and furnishings. A study of books and their owners reveals networks of clergy in Scotland committed to the liturgy and Catholic reform, especially the 'Aberdeen liturgists'. Holmes corrects current scholarship by showing that their influence lasted beyond 1560 and suggests that they created the distinctive religious culture of North-East Scotland (later a centre of Catholic recusancy, Episcopalianism and Jacobitism). The final two chapters investigate what happened to liturgical interpretation in Scottish religious culture after the Protestant Reformation of 1559-60, showing that while it declined in importance in Catholic circles, a Reformed Protestant version of liturgical interpretation was created and flourished which used exactly the same method to produce both an interpretation of the Reformed sacramental rites and an 'anti-commentary' on Catholic liturgy. The book demonstrates an important continuity across the Reformation divide arguing that the 'Scottish Reformation' is best seen as both Catholic and Protestant, with the reformers on both sides having more in common than they or subsequent historians have allowed.

Book Synopsis Paisley Patterns by : Valerie Reilly
Download or read book Paisley Patterns written by Valerie Reilly and published by Gramercy. This book was released on 1989 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most enduring motifs that man has ever devised is that known to the English speaking world as the Paisley Pattern. Originating in pre-historic times as a representative plant form, it has been in constant use, in one way or another, for over 2000 years. When introduced into Europe late in the eighteenth century, the pattern was seen as something exotic and was soon enthusiastically copied by textile manufacturers in Britain and France. The shawls, which were the principle garments to be decorated with the motif, remained an essential part of a woman's wardrobe for virtually a century, adapting in size and shape as each new dress fashion came along. During that time millions of shawls were produced, in thousands of different varieties. The town of Paisley was the largest producer of the shawls and although the industry no longer dominates, the fame of the Paisley Pattern lives on. The Paisley Museum, established in 1871, has over the years built up an enormous collection of shawls for display and research purposes. Just as important as the shawls themselves, however, are the manufacturers' original pattern books, which contain large numbers of examples of the various stages in producing a design for a shawl. One hundred and fifty of the best pieces of artwork have been selected and have been faithfully reproduced in this lavishly illustrated volume. Dates of the designs and historical information have been included wherever possible, making the book important for both textile historians and students of design. With the current revival of fashionable interest in both the pattern and the shawl itself, the contents of the book will surely provide a vital source of inspiration for yet more variations of this exquisite and enduring design."--Provided by publisher
