Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete for the Farmer For many years the farmer's chief building material has been wood. At one time it was plentiful and therefore an economical material to use. The land had to be cleared for agricultural purposes and because of the farmer's nearness to the timber supply, it is but natural that he used wood almost to the exclusion of other building materials and has continued to do so while it has been largely discarded in the larger communities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Construction About the Home and on the Farm The development of the American Portland Cement industry during the past decade has been one of the marvels of the age, and while Portland Cement Concrete has come to be recognized as the ideal building material for heavy work, comparatively little attention has been given to its use in the smaller f. Construction about the home and on the farm. That active interest, however, is taken in this important subject by the suburbanite, the villager, and the farmer, is evidenced by the large number of letters of inquiry received by the agricultural and technical journals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Concrete The importance of the correct use of concrete as a build ing material can scarcely be sufficiently emphasized, no matter into what particular type of structure the material enters. The cost of good concrete, in labor and materials, is practically no more than that of poor concrete. It is a fact, however, that a great amount of unsuccessful work in concrete results from the non-observance of simple fundamental rules. In the preparation of this manual on farm concrete, the writer has endeavored to treat this particular phase of the subject in a simple, non-technical, and at the same time, a reasonably comprehensive manner, so that a study of it will lead to a clear understanding of actual requirements for successful work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expense-Proof Farm Five reprintings of our original farm construction book have convinced us that there is a very real demand for a book describing the simple forms of concrete construction which a farmer or home-owner can handle himself. Although new uses for concrete are constantly turning up, and will continue to do so, the general rules of construction laid down herein should enable any careful workman to handle what simple construction work he wishes, and to develop any new uses the nature of this material makes possible. The sources from which we obtained much of the information contained in this book are so numerous and so varied that we simply take this opportunity for a general acknowledgment of our indebtedness to all our many friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete in the Country With little help other than looking and listening. The farmer grasped the idea of a concrete walk, and being a natural inventor and jack-of-all-trades. Improved on the method by adding a small curb next to his flower bed to keep the dirt from washing on the white walk. This walk was a blessing to the boy - all the time formerly given to scrubbing and weeding the old brick walk could now be devoted to fishing. The yard walk was extended to the barns and outlying buildings. Wading through seas of mud and resulting tracked-up kitchen floors became a thing of the past. By simply increasing the width of the walk, a cellar floor was provided and the farmer had a dry cellar. This was so clean and so odorless that he considered such a floor fit for that most immaculate of all places - the milk house. Concrete cellar hatchway and steps, safe under the heaviest barrel of vinegar. And water-tight, were made in a manner similar to walks. Brick work had long been laid up in a mixture of Portland cement and sand. As this kept the water out, the farmer reasoned that it would keep the water in. And he started to build cistern floors, walls and cover of Portland cement concrete at one-third to one-half the cost of the old brick cistern. After a little more observation. He quit digging deep cistern-pits, with the necessary annoyance of thawing out frozen pumps and carrying water - he built a concrete cistern on top of the ground and made the pumping and carrying of the water a mere matter of turning a faucet in the kitchen and the bath room. Several years ago corn was so cheap that in some sections it was burned for fuel instead of coal. No consideration was then given to the bushels wasted in muddy feed lots. If the mud became too deep, the feeding was transferred to the blue grass pasture. To be sure. As the sod wore out, the feeding-place had to be changed; but somebody had advanced the idea that this particular method of feeding was good for the soil. Many farmers had tried wooden feeding floors and had found them a paying proposition as far as the saving of feed was concerned. In the general health of the animal, and in the shortened time of fattening. But two great drawbacks were the rats that infested them and the constant need of re pairs. In concrete the thoughtful farmer saw the possibilities of an ideal floor - an easily cleaned, rat-proof, disease-proof surface Upon which his hogs, sheep, cattle and poultry might consume the feed even to the smallest particle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete on the Farm and in the Shop: A Complete Practical Treatise on the Commonest Every-Day Uses of Concrete Within recent years there has been increas ing attention given to the use of concrete as a building material. Nowhere has this interest been relatively greater than on the farm. The appeal of concrete is due largely to the fact that care and faithful observance of fundamental principles enable a large portion of the actual labor to be performed by those who are relatively unskilled. The increasing cost of lumber has made concrete not only a formidable competitor but successful rival. Not only is this true but those who have once used concrete have come to a realization that in the concrete structure expensive upkeep is eliminated. There is no longer the continual an nual outlay for repairing, painting, straightening up, and rebuilding or patching the work to put it into condition equal to new, or to maintain it in serviceable condition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Use Cement for Concrete Construction for Town and Farm: Including Formulas, Drawing and Specific Instruction to Enable the Reader to Construct Farm and Town Equipment; An Ideal Book for Agricultural Schools The author desires to mention here that in addition 'to claiming some special knowledge [on the many and varied uses of concrete, he also was raised on a farm and operates one at the present time. For that reason, pursuit of the engineering profession has never made him lose sight of a farmer's view point and needs, and in his own farming practice he has had many opportunities to prove the economy of concrete first and last. Also, long association with the Portland Cement Associa tion in the preparation of its many informative booklets on concrete has favored him with access-to material which other wise would not have been available to make this book as com prehensive and practical as it is felt has been done through this fortunate connection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Construction on the Live-Stock Farm: Prepared Under the Direction of the Bureau of Animal Industry Some of the increased cost of living may be traced directly to the decreased producing power of the farm lands. This condition has been largely brought about by delivering the harvested crop direct to the market and returning nothing to the fields. The problem of restoring the soil to its former fertility, together with the advanced price of meats, makes it highly profitable for every farmer to raise a certain amount of live stock. The manure thus produced, prop erly cared for and distributed, returns to the cultivated land a large part of the fertility which the crop of grain removed. From the sale of his live stock the farmer realizes a direct profit on his grain consumed, and also, through the use of the manure, increases the fertility of his fields. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Economics Among the newer subjects which are claiming the attention of the thoughtful citizen are Agricultural Economics and Farm Management. Both' are mere subdivisions of political economy. Farm management has to do with the farmer's relation to his individual farm, the central principle being the economic question of how he can secure the highest net returns. Agricultural Eco nomics, however, is concerned with the social aspects of agriculture, and has for its first consideration the welfare of the Republic, and for its second consideration the welfare of agriculture as one com. Ponent part of that Republic. Farm Management may be said to look on the farmer as practicing a trade: Agricultural Economics looks on the farmer as a citizen. The question of rural credit, for instance, is, to the teacher of Farm Management, the very concrete problem of where and how can farmer Jones borrow money at the lowest rate of interest: while this same question is, to the teacher of Agricultural Economics, the broad economic problem which recognizes the intimate and vital relation of sound credit to both the individual and community prosperity. This book does not pretend to be a work of original research. It is a bringing together of some new and some old information which is scattered over a wide area of books, papers, reports, and other sources. The book is not written for the expert or specialist, but for the average student of agricultural problems. My aim in writing this book is threefold: (1) to interest the reader in the subject of Agricultural Economics; (2) to point out by a few simple illustrations the most significant problems in this field; (3) and finally to stimulate thinking and discussion which may help towards the solution of these problems. Conversely, I have not tried to offer ready-made remedies for the problems dis cussed, or to formulate a set of laws and principles, or, indeed, to present a large number of entirely new facts to the reader. The facts and illustrations given are believed to have real significance in interpreting the deeper movements in agriculture.
