Book Synopsis Craftsman Farms by : Heather E. Stivison
Download or read book Craftsman Farms written by Heather E. Stivison and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Craftsman Farms was the country estate of the father of the American Arts and Crafts movement, Gustav Stickley. Though Stickley is credited with creating hundreds of home designs, this property contains the only home he designed and built for his own use. His rustic log house was built upon a rolling hillside surrounded by lawns, stone walls, and working farmland. In September 1917, the property was purchased by Sylvia and George Farny, who loved it dearly and passed it on to their descendants. Portions of the 650 acres were sold, but the core remained intact until the 1980s, when it was threatened by condominium development. Community activists launched a "Save the Farms" campaign, which led to the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills purchasing Craftsman Farms through eminent domain. Today, it is a busy historic house museum operated by the nonprofit Craftsman Farms Foundation. Craftsman Farms showcases the significant design legacy Gustav Stickley created as well as the architectural and landscape history of this New Jersey National Historic Landmark.

Book Synopsis Arts and Crafts Rugs for Craftsman Interiors by : Linda Parry
Download or read book Arts and Crafts Rugs for Craftsman Interiors written by Linda Parry and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The rugs used in Craftsman interiors are, arguably, the most under-studied of all the decorative arts of the Arts and Crafts movement. These rugs were at once useful and beautiful, and they added subdued color, rugged texture, and understated pattern to the rooms they graced, playing a fundamental role in the visual harmony of the Craftsman domestic interior. Though Stickley was primarily a furniture maker and a publisher and did not manufacture rugs, he did choose them, and his choices completed the elegant simplicity of the Craftsman house. He often considered the art of rug making in The Craftsman, and he also used the magazine to advertise the affordable, well-designed rugs that he sold in his retail stores and mail-order catalogs for at least thirteen years." "Arts and Crafts Rugs for Craftsman Interiors considers both the rugs that The Craftsman recommended and designs by artists who influenced the work and philosophy of Stickley. Among the rugs discussed are works by British Arts and Crafts luminaries William Morris, Gavin Morton, C. F. A. Voysey, and Evelyn Gleeson; druggets imported from India; Navajo blankets and rugs; and rare Crex and Abnakee examples. Presenting an engaging study of an overlooked aspect of the Arts and Crafts movement, this essential publication includes more than 125 color and black-and-white illustrations, many of them featuring rugs drawn primarily from the collection of Crab Tree Farm." --Book Jacket.

Book Synopsis American Home Life, 1880-1930 by : Jessica H. Foy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the pivotal decades around the turn of the century, American domestic life underwent dramatic alteration. From backstairs to front stairs, spaces and the activities within them were radically affected by shifts in the larger social and material environments. This volume, while taking account of architecture and decoration, moves us beyond the study of buildings to the study of behaviors, particularly the behaviors of those who peopled the middle-class, single-family, detached American home between 1880 and 1930." "The book's contributors study transformations in services (such as home utilities of power, heat, light, water, and waste removal) in servicing (for example, the impact of home appliances such as gas and electric ranges, washing machines, and refrigerators), and in serving (changes in domestic servants' duties, hours of work, racial and ethnic backgrounds)." "In blending intellectual and home history, these essays both examine and exemplify the perennial American enthusiasm for, as well as anxiety about, the meaning of modernity."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
