Book excerpt: A thoughtful book that explains to children what to do if they are ever separated from their parents in public. Lu is excited to go to the marketplace with Mama today. It's crowded, and she clings to Mama's red coat, but when she stoops for a second to pet the cutest little puppy, Mama is suddenly gone. She looks around quickly, but she can't find Mama. She does cross paths with a little boy, Roberto, who is also lost, and has been for a while. Luckily, Lu knows just what to do to help herself and, now, Roberto. She recites the steps they must complete while Roberto dries his tears. Though Lu advises Roberto to stay put and to call his father on his cell, Roberto cannot remember his father's phone number—and Lu refuses to go with a stranger to his car where the man says she can use his phone. The next step is to find the police, not because Lu and Roberto are criminals, of course, but because the police will help Lu find Mama and Roberto find his father. Lu and Roberto must fight the urge to panic and trust that they'll be reunited with their parents shortly. This sensitively narrated story illustrates how clear rules and arrangements can help protect and empower children during an especially vulnerable outing. The ending includes a straightforward list of steps children can memorize in case they are lost in the future, as well as prompts for parents to help prepare their children for this situation.

Book excerpt: “An intriguing amalgam of personal memoir, philosophical speculation, natural lore, cultural history, and art criticism.” —Los Angeles Times From the award-winning author of Orwell's Roses, a stimulating exploration of wandering, being lost, and the uses of the unknown Written as a series of autobiographical essays, A Field Guide to Getting Lost draws on emblematic moments and relationships in Rebecca Solnit's life to explore issues of uncertainty, trust, loss, memory, desire, and place. Solnit is interested in the stories we use to navigate our way through the world, and the places we traverse, from wilderness to cities, in finding ourselves, or losing ourselves. While deeply personal, her own stories link up to larger stories, from captivity narratives of early Americans to the use of the color blue in Renaissance painting, not to mention encounters with tortoises, monks, punk rockers, mountains, deserts, and the movie Vertigo. The result is a distinctive, stimulating voyage of discovery.

Book excerpt: In this gentle read-aloud--a modern day Velveteen Rabbit--a stuffed bunny comes to life after getting lost on a family's camping trip, then finds its way back to its child. "If you get lost, and you might get lost...." In simple language that speaks directly to us, a magical and soothing story unfolds. A little girl accidentally drops her stuffed bunny out the car window, and the bunny--which has quietly come alive-- feels scared. Searching up, down, in, out, and between, it soon finds itself among a group of friendly forest animals, who accompany it on its journey. Together they frolic through the woods and over a stream until the bunny finds itself safely back where it belongs, in the little girl's arms.

Drawing on examples from history, business, art, and science, this book details nine of the most versatile, all-purpose mental models you can use right away to improve your decision making and productivity. This book will teach you how to: Avoid blind spots when looking at problems. Find non-obvious solutions. Anticipate and achieve desired outcomes. Play to your strengths, avoid your weaknesses, … and more. The Great Mental Models series demystifies once elusive concepts and illuminates rich knowledge that traditional education overlooks. Book excerpt: The highly anticipated new book from the acclaimed author of The Accident Season is a gorgeous, twisty story about things gone missing, things returned from the past, and a group of teenagers, connected in ways they could never have imagined. One stormy Irish summer night, Olive and her best friend, Rose, begin to lose things. It starts with simple items like hairclips and jewelry, but soon it's clear that Rose has lost something much bigger, something she won't talk about, and Olive thinks her best friend is slipping away. Then seductive diary pages written by a girl named Laurel begin to appear all over town. And Olive meets three mysterious strangers: Ivy, Hazel, and her twin brother, Rowan, secretly squatting in an abandoned housing estate. The trio are wild and alluring, but they seem lost too—and like Rose, they're holding tight to painful secrets. When they discover the spellbook, it changes everything. Damp, tattered and ancient, it's full of hand-inked charms to conjure back things that have been lost. And it just might be their chance to find what they each need to set everything back to rights. Unless it's leading them toward things that were never meant to be found...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humorous, insightful essays on outdoor life from the renowned contributor and editor of Field & Stream—“one of the best magazine writers in America” (The Wall Street Journal). Living the life of an outdoorsman doesn’t necessarily take skill. After more than two decades of writing about his adventures (and misadventures), Bill Heavey has proven that being a true outdoorsman just takes enthusiasm, determination, and a willingness to, occasionally, make a fool of oneself. You’re Not Lost If You Can Still See the Truck gathers together more than sixty of Heavey’s best stories from his work in Field & Stream, The Washington Post, and The Washingtonian. Including retellings of his adventures hunting ants in the urban jungles of Washington, DC; braving freezing winter expeditions in Eastern Alaska; attempting to impress ladies by immediately flipping over his canoe; and planning deer hunts around dad-duties, these tales are chock full of life, insight, and, of course, hilarity. Here is a far-ranging and enlightening volume that traces a life lived outdoors, for better or for worse. “To the list of great Field & Stream essayists . . . add the name Bill Heavey. His writing is funny, poignant, acerbic, and, best of all, always alert to the absurdities of life.” —Patrick C. McManus
