Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timing is everything. Nothing could be truer as it relates to John Calvin and his teaching. If Calvin had lived a century earlier, his teaching would have been swallowed up in the Catholic tradition, and he would likely be a footnote in Christian history rather than a pillar. If he had come a century later, his teaching would have faced the daunting task of shaping a movement that was already in motion. When Calvin developed his doctrine, it was the perfect time. The Western World was ready for a new theological system as it had not been since the time of Constantine. This time, however, the system was able to ride the wings of revolution that bore the historically powerful impetus of freedom from religious tyranny. But, what if Calvin was wrong? In this book, readers will learn the basics of the Calvinistic teaching of Eternal Security and the disparity between this teaching and the clear teaching of the Bible. For example: Ezekiel 18:24 says, "But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die." Eternal Security and Ezekiel clash at this point. What should the responsible Christian do? What about all of the Christians who have fallen into sin and even died in a backslidden state? What about all the parables that conflict with the teaching of Eternal Security? The Bible lists several sins that are capable of destroying a believer's hope in Heaven. Among those are unforgiveness and hatred. Is the answer that Eternal Security provides strong enough to overrule these Scriptural teachings? In addition, "What if Calvin Was Wrong?" exposes several myths that are often propagated by modern Calvinists. Many of these myths are faulty interpretations of Scripture. See how these myths stack up when evaluated in the light of the truth. The most dramatic of these myths is the teaching of modern Calvinists that suicide victims can go to Heaven. Is this true? Is it what the Bible says? What if Calvin was wrong?

Book excerpt: Congregations are made up of people with all sorts of theologies. Pastor Mike Slaughter even says that these can stand in the way of the church’s mission of social and personal holiness. But most people do not adopt a theology on purpose, mostly they merely breathe in the prevailing cultural air. The theology "de jour" seems to be Calvinist, with its emphasis on “the elect” and “other worldly salvation.” In fact, there is so much Calvinism saturating the culture, that some do not even know there is an alternative way of thinking about their faith. They don’t know where to go to find a viable option; they don’t even know the key words to search Google. So people are left thinking like Calvinists but living with a desire to change the world, offering grace and hope to hurting people in mission and ministry—loving the least, the last, and the lost. In other words, they are living like Wesleyans. This book shows what Calvinist and Wesleyans actually believe about human responsibility, salvation, the universality of God’s grace, holy living through service, and the benefits of small group accountability--and how that connects to how people can live. Calvinists and Wesleyans are different, and by knowing the difference, people will not only see the other benefits of Wesleyan theology but will be inspired to learn more. By knowing who they are as faithful people of God, they will be motivated to reach out in mission with renewed vigor. And they won’t be obstacles to grace and holiness, but they can be better disciples and advocates for Christ through service in this world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's wrong with Calvinism? Since the Reformation, Calvinism has dominated much of evangelical thought. It has been so well established that many Christians simply assume it to be the truest expression of Christian doctrine. But Calvinism has some serious biblical and theological weaknesses that unsettle laypeople, pastors and scholars alike. God is sovereign. All evangelical Christians--whether Arminians or Calvinists--have no doubt about this fundamental truth. But how does God express his sovereignty? Is God a master puppeteer, pulling our strings? Or has he graciously given his children freedom to respond to his love? In this eminently readable book, Jerry L. Walls and Joseph R. Dongell explore the flaws of Calvinist theology. Why I Am Not a Calvinist is a must-read for all who struggle with the limitations of this dominant perspective within evangelical theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God truly love all persons? Most Christians think the obvious answer to this question is, "Yes, of course he does!" Indeed, many Christians would agree that the very heart of the gospel is that God so loved the whole world that he gave his Son to make salvation available for every single person. This book shows that one of the most popular and resurgent theological movements in the contemporary evangelical church--namely, Calvinism--cannot coherently and consistently affirm this vital claim about the love of God. While some Calvinists forthrightly deny that God loves everyone, more commonly Calvinists attempt to affirm the love of God for all persons in terms that are compatible with their doctrines that Christ died only for the elect--those persons God has unconditionally chosen to save. This book shows that the Calvinist attempts to affirm God's love for all persons are fraught with severe philosophical and theological difficulties. Calvinism, then, should be rejected in favor of a theology that can forthrightly and consistently affirm the love of God for all persons. Nothing less is at stake than the very heart of the gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvinist theology has been debated and promoted for centuries. But is it a theology that should last? Roger Olson suggests that Calvinism, also commonly known as Reformed theology, holds an unwarranted place in our list of accepted theologies. In Against Calvinism, readers will find scholarly arguments explaining why Calvinist theology is incorrect and how it affects God’s reputation. Olson draws on a variety of sources, including Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience, to support his critique of Calvinism and the more historically rich, biblically faithful alternative theologies he proposes. Addressing what many evangelical Christians are concerned about today—so-called “new Calvinism,” a movement embraced by a generation labeled as “young, restless, Reformed” —Against Calvinism is the only book of its kind to offer objections from a non-Calvinist perspective to the current wave of Calvinism among Christian youth. As a companion to Michael Horton’s For Calvinism, readers will be able to compare contrasting perspectives and form their own opinions on the merits and weaknesses of Calvinism.

Book excerpt: Contrary to what many philosophers believe, Calvinism neither makes the problem of evil worse nor is it obviously refuted by the presence of evil and suffering in our world. Or so most of the authors in this book claim. While Calvinism has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years amongst theologians and laypersons, many philosophers have yet to follow suit. The reason seems fairly clear: Calvinism, many think, cannot handle the problem of evil with the same kind of plausibility as other more popular views of the nature of God and the nature of God's relationship with His creation. This book seeks to challenge that untested assumption. With clarity and rigor, this collection of essays seeks to fill a significant hole in the literature on the problem of evil.

Book excerpt: The Hebrew Bible portrays King Manasseh and child sacrifice as the most reprehensible person and the most objectionable practice within the story of 'Israel'. This monograph suggests that historically, neither were as deviant as the Hebrew Bible appears to insist. Through careful historical reconstruction, it is argued that Manasseh was one of Judah's most successful monarchs, and child sacrifice played a central role in ancient Judahite religious practice. The biblical writers, motivated by ideological concerns, have thus deliberately distorted the truth about Manasseh and child sacrifice.

Book excerpt: A serious biblical and philosophical investigation of theological determinism: the idea that everything that happens has already been decided by God, including who will and won’t be saved. This book was written for those who are interested in, or troubled by, questions about God's sovereignty and human freedom and responsibility. Christian apologist John Lennox writes in the spirit of helping people understand the biblical treatment of these concepts. In this mind-bending review of the topics of theological determinism, predestination, election, and foreknowledge, Lennox: Defines the problem, considering the concept of freedom, the different kinds of determinism, and the moral issues these pose. Explores the range of theological opinion and unpacks what the Bible—especially the gospels and Paul's letter to the Romans—teaches about human and sovereign will. Addresses the question of Christian assurance: how can I know if I have salvation? This nuanced and detailed study challenges some of the widely held assumptions about theological determinism and brings a fresh perspective to the debate. This book is for anyone who's asked questions like: Is my decision to believe or disbelieve in Jesus actually my decision? Is it possible for a genuine believer to lose their salvation? How much free will do I really have? By the author of Seven Days that Divide the World and 2084: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity, Determined to Believe? will launch your consciousness into a fresh understanding and appreciation of this important Christian debate and help you think both biblically and logically about the human condition.

Book excerpt: Unleavened Faith lets the Bible speak for itself; it attempts to show how to study God's word by carefully listening to what it says. It is far more a guidebook than a commentary; it will aid in directing our meditations and, more importantly, put limits on our imaginations in the study of the Scriptures. The method used in these studies is in opposition to private interpretation. It begins with showing Christians where they fit in the world of religion; then gives the rules for understanding, building the precepts or general principles to which all doctrine and teaching must conform to rightly divide and correctly interpret the Word of truth. Unleavened Faith is not written in scholarly jargon but by and for the average person desirous of a better knowledge and understanding of God's Word: "Let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth." Jeremiah 9:24

Is it true that God has determined your eternal destiny even before you were born? Christ seems to invite everyone to himself throughout the pages of the New Testament, but is this a hoax? Calvinists have been relegated to a closet inside of evangelicalism for nearly five hundred years but they have broken out and have become aggressive in their promotion of what they call their Doctrines of Grace, even to other Christians. This book will help if your friend is a Calvinist and is promoting what sounds logical to your ears. It will give you answers if your new pastor is promoting Reform Theology in your church. Written in a easy-to-read handbook format, Cracking Calvin will give you the answers to these and other questions that you have been searching to find.

Book excerpt: Park Rose is a story based on actual events that occurred in my life growing up. I titled the book Park Rose because Park Rose was a street I lived on in Duarte, California, a very nice, quiet neighborhood in the Monrovia area. Our house wasn't right in the middle of the neighborhood, but I'm sure all the screams and sounds coming from that house made it the center of the neighborhood attention. I will never forget the things that occurred on Park Rose and in my life thereafter. God has brought me a might long way. Without God, I know I would not be here being able to share my testimony with you all. I also wanted to make awareness to mental illness. Enduring through years of abuse, my mother was not able to care for us appropriately anymore. She is not able to care for herself today. Abuse doesn't just end when the abuse stops; it continues for years without the proper help.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Calvin (1509–64) stands with Martin Luther (1483–1546) as the premier theologian of the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation. Calvin's thought spread throughout Europe to the New World and later throughout the whole world. His insights and influence continue to endure today, presenting a model of theological scholarship grounded in Scripture as well as providing nurture for Christian believers within churches across the globe. Dr Donald K. McKim gathers together an international array of major Calvin scholars to consider phases of Calvin's theological thought and influence. Historians and theologians meet to present a full picture of Calvin's contexts, the major themes in Calvin's writings, and the ways in which his thought spread and has increasing importance. Chapters serve as guides to their topics and provide further readings for additional study. This is an accessible introduction to this significant Protestant reformer and will appeal to the specialist and non-specialist alike.
