Book Synopsis Operation Market Garden by : Simon Forty
Download or read book Operation Market Garden written by Simon Forty and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battle of Normandy ended as the Allied armies crossed the Seine at the end of August 1944, a month after Operation Cobra had broken the stalemate. The Allies harried the retreating Germans, who left their tanks and heavy weapons south of the Seine, and by mid-September the Allies were coming up against the defenses of Germany itself, the impressive Westwall. As far as the Allies were concerned, the Germans were beaten. The scent of immediate victory was in the air, the only question was where to apply the coup de grace. Logistics demanded that this should be a single thrust rather than Eisenhower's broad front approach. Montgomery--the architect of victory in Normandy--proposed a daring plan to circumvent the Westwall, thrust towards Berlin, and make use of the newly created 1st Allied Airborne Army. The plan was simple: use the Paratroopers to hold key bridges along a single route along which British XXX Corps would make an advance that would be "rapid and violent, and without regard to what is happening on the flanks." US 101st Airborne would land north of Eindhoven; 82nd Airborne at Nijmegen; British 1st Airborne at Arnhem--the so-called "bridge too far." Unfortunately, the plan was flawed, the execution imperfect, and the Germans far from beaten. In spite of the audacious actions of the Paratroopers who would cover themselves with glory, Operation Market Garden showed that the German ground forces would still provide the Allies with stiff opposition in the West. And then, in 1977, A Bridge Too Far came out. With levels of realism that wouldn't be approached for twenty years, the movie produced a view of the battle that subverted reality and permeated public perception. Just as George C. Scott produced the definitive Patton, so A Bridge Too Far provided an unnuanced view of the battles that historians have battled to correct ever since. As with its companion volumes on D-Day, the Bocage, and the Ardennes battlefields, this book provides a balanced, up-to-date view of the operation making full use of modern research. With over 500 illustrations including many maps, aerial and then-and-now photography, it will provide the reader with an easy-to-read, up-to-date examination of each part of the operation, benefitting from on-the-ground research by Tom Timmermans, who lives in Eindhoven.
Book Synopsis Operation Chowhound by : Stephen Dando-Collins
Download or read book Operation Chowhound written by Stephen Dando-Collins and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of a little-known, yet remarkable World War II operation, which had all the hallmarks of a suicide mission. Beginning with a crazy plan hatched by a suspect prince, and an even crazier reliance on the word of the Nazis, Operation Chowhound was devised. Between May 1 and May 8, 1945, 2,268 military units flown by the USAAF, dropped food to 3.5 million starving Dutch civilians in German-occupied Holland. It took raw courage to fly on Operation Chowhound, as American aircrews never knew when the German AAA might open fire on them or if Luftwaffe fighters might jump them. Flying at 400 feet, barely above the tree tops, with guns pointed directly at them, they would have no chance to bail out if their B-17s were hit—and yet, over eight days, 120,000 German troops kept their word, and never fired on the American bombers. As they flew, grateful Dutch civilians spelled out "Thanks Boys" in the tulip fields below. Many Americans who flew in Operation Chowhound would claim it was the best thing they did in the war. In this gripping narrative, author Stephen Dando-Collins takes the reader into the rooms where Operation Chowhound was born, into the aircraft flying the mission, and onto the ground in the Netherlands with the civilians who so desperately needed help. James Bond creator Ian Fleming, Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn, as well as Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Churchill all play a part in this story, creating a compelling, narrative read.

Book Synopsis It Never Snows in September by : Robert J. Kershaw
Download or read book It Never Snows in September written by Robert J. Kershaw and published by Hippocrene Books. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On 17 September 1944 the historic Battle of Arnhem began with the massed parachute drop of thousands of Allied troops. Their mission was to create a bridgehead from which operations could be conducted against German forces in the Ruhr. Ten days later, the British were forced to withdraw. They would not return for six long months..." "Despite a plethora of books on the Market-Garden operation, most notably Cornelius Ryan's A Bridge Too Far, the German perspective has never been fully examined. It has taken over 45 years for a comprehensive account to emerge. Exhaustive research of the few remaining German archival documents, corroborated by numerous eye-witness and diary accounts, including much previously unpublished material, means that this new book is certain to stimulate renewed debate concerning one of the most controversial engagements of World War II." "A number of historians have felt that a revision of some parts of the Arnhem legend is long overdue. 50 years after the foundation of the Parachute Regiment, its part in earning its most prestigious battle honour can now, at last, be viewed from 'the other side of the hill'. A major work of military history, 'It Never Snows In September', and the events it chronicles, has much relevance for the study and conduct of warfare today."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Shards of Memory by : Yehudi Lindeman
Download or read book Shards of Memory written by Yehudi Lindeman and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the last Holocaust survivors die, their testimonies make the transition from memory to history. In this compelling volume, Yehudi Lindeman, Director of the Living Testimonies Video Archive in Montreal, shares compelling stories of survival and triumph collected from years of interviews with those who lived through the most harrowing decade of the 20th century. Here are 25 tales of courage and loss, representing the experiences of women, men, and children who either survived the death camps or lived in hiding, and of their rescuers and redeemers. The testimonies included in this volume show glimpses of the big movements, the big picture of World War II—the fast German sweep into Poland; the bureaucratic German machine that marked and identified Jews across German-occupied Europe; the efficiently organized roundups of Europe's Jews; the gradual retreat of the Wehrmacht from east to west; the sudden attacks on Holland and France. The fate of the European Jews may be a collective one, but their attempt to survive the onslaught on their liberty and life is often best understood through the portrayal of individual struggles. By focusing on individual lives, the narratives collected here capture the flow of history in all its precise, subjective, human detail.
