Book excerpt: Excerpt from Congregationalism in Minnesota, 1851-1891 In the United States there is one Congregationalist to less than one Episcopalian, more than two Presbyterians, eight Baptists and nine Methodists. 'in Minnesota the ratio is somewhat different, viz.; one Congregationalist to three-fourths of an Episcopalian, one Presbyterian, one Baptist and one and one-half Methodists. The data are not at hand for a comparison with the Lutherans. The Roman Catholics claim a constituency of in Minnesota, but their method of computa tion reckons families where we reckon individuals. The Year Book for 1890 reports over Congregational families. We have over 14, 000 church members and in our Sunday séhools. We may safely say that the Congregational constituency of Minnesota is not less than On this basis the Roman Catholics outnumber as five to one. As a Congregational state Minnesota ranked last year twelfth, in the Union, in the number of churches, eleventh in church membership, tenth in Sunday school enrollment and fifth in benevolent contributions. Chase, at the Centennial Celebration of the Congregational Church, Hampden, Mass;, November 18, 1885 I had been wont to think of youth as a time for looking into the future rather than into the past; a time of imagination rather than for the discussion of plain everyday facts, and yet I find myself to-day placed to recall for. You the events of the past century of vour church life; surely the theme de mands a longer memory, a better judgment, a readier pen than mine, - yet that which I have I gladly bring to your ser Vice. The day is one of thanksgiving and congratulation. Thanks to God, who, by His wisdom, has directed the church through the eventful century; thanks to Him as the faithful promisor, who, in all this time, has fulfilled his word for the field, and thereby has sustained the life of the people; thanks to Him as the loving Father who has crowned our homes with their love and precious sympathy. A day of congratulation to vou, for your steadfast faith and that of your fathers, Men whose hands were brown with toil, Who backed by no ancestral graves, Hewed down the wood and tilled the soil And thereby won a prouder fame. This book was released on 2003 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship renewal is now on the agenda of many Reformed churches, as the need for adaptation and new approaches is acutely felt all over. How can the church faithfully worship God in the midst of rapidly changing situations? How can it constructively relate to widely differing cultural contexts? What is its place in the wider ecumenical scene? In preparing a sweeping survey of Reformed worship across time and place, this volume provides some help to those engaged with vital questions like these. Written by theologians and liturgical scholars from a wide range of churches and countries, these chapters explore the history of Reformed worship on every continent from the sixteenth century to the present. Surveying the most significant developments in the growth of Reformed worship, the book identifies the major "ingredients" that make the Reformed worship tradition distinctive and highlights those aspects of Reformed worship that are particularly relevant to present efforts at renewal. Indeed, an important component of this book is the inclusion of "A Common Reflection on Christian Worship in Reformed Churches Today," the result of a major consultation in January 2001 at the International Reformed Center John Knox. Revealing the rich variety of forms and diversity of perspectives that have made and do make up Reformed worship worldwide, this volume will be a valuable resource for church and worship leaders both in and outside the Reformed family.
