Book excerpt: What has Fergus gotten himself into this time? The residents of Whitaker Holler, nestled in the Tennessee Smoky Mountains, possess the gene (engineered millennia ago) that saved them from perishing during a catastrophic global pandemic three years earlier. They're lucky. They knew all about rustic living before the apocalypse.Led by Serena Jo, a brilliant, determined woman who doesn't hesitate when making impossible, even ruthless decisions about their survival, the Mountain People thrive in this newly primitive world. Two diverse residents of a secret government warehouse (one of the nation's seven 'Strategic National Stockpiles') camouflaged within a self-storage complex a few miles from Whitaker Holler also survived the pandemic.Ray, the facility's former brainy but phobia-plagued supervisor must accommodate his captive, a malevolent psychopath bent on murdering every human she encounters. Ray knows keeping the survivors safe from Lizzy, despite the toll she takes on his peace of mind, is the most important and dangerous job left in the world. What if he fails?

They must unify their diverse strengths not only to rebuild civilization, but to battle those who would forge empires of oppression and brutality."There is one who would rule the world or see it burn."Fans of Stephen King's "The Stand," Hugh Howey's "Wool" series, and Markus Sakey's "Brilliance" trilogy will love this novel. Book excerpt: This is a work of fiction, based on the Author's Visions and dreams, Native stories, and the Bible. This is a story about a Native man called Shiloh, who has the memories of Jesus. Shiloh was born of a Native American mother named Mary and a Portuguese father named Joseph, This takes place in a world that Rome did not fall as in our world, and the head of Rome, is an elusive man known only as "the Emperor." This Rome was visited by "Aliens", Native Spirits from the Star Sirius who foretold of a prophesy concerning the end of the world. Included as part of the story is my Vision Quest that started it all for me showing a relationship between my "Dreams" and the waking world. From my Native way of looking at life there are differences in the story of Jesus and the Bible. One main difference is the "Arrow of Truth", which is a more positive replacement for the Christian idea of sin. This originated in a dream that I had about the same point in time that I wrote a poem called "This is a Circle". It was a meditation and then, the Vision Quest that brought it all together, into this story.

Book excerpt: This is a science fiction / spiritual novel that takes place in the year 2113. At a time on the Earth when everything is dying due to the misuse and rape of the planet, a white flower comes out of the ocean and advances across the land. It is unstoppable, but not aggressive. Four boys meet a mysterious young woman in the forest that the wild, white flowers seem to be following. The misguided and abusive interaction between three of the boys and this strange young woman, and then the following sequence of events that occur when the rest of the world discover Anne, are both tragic and touchingly similar. This story is about discovering and acknowledging our accountability in the ongoing relationship with this Earth who has a Spirit and is a Living Being, capable of a deep and unconditional Love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines jurisdictional differences in the role of the principle of the welfare interests of the child in common and civil law and focuses on differences within these two legal traditions. By identifying and analysing the functions of the principle both in the public and private sector of family law, the book compares and contrasts different jurisdictions and assesses their capacity to implement children’s welfare interests and rights. Covering a variety of topics including child abuse and neglect, state care, adoption and reproductive rights and family breakdown, the book demonstrates how welfare interests and rights can be balanced to create a coherent framework for family law. In addition to providing an up-to-date digest of cases and legislation, the book will be of interest to researchers in the field of child welfare and family law.

Book excerpt: The story of foster care in the United States is the story of the failure of the social safety net to aid poor, largely black, parents in their attempt to make a home for their children. Shattered Bonds tells this story as no other book has before -- from the perspective of a prominent black, female legal theoretician. The current state of the child-welfare system in America is a well-known tragedy. Thousands of children every year are removed from their parents' homes, often for little reason other than the endemic poverty that afflicts women and children more than any other group in the United States. Dorothy Roberts, an acclaimed legal scholar and social critic, reveals the racial politics of child welfare in America through extensive legal research and original interviews with Chicago families in the foster care system. She describes the racial imbalance in foster care, the concentration of state intervention in certain neighborhoods, the alarming percentages of children in substitute care, the difficulty that poor and black families have in meeting state's standards for regaining custody of children placed in foster care, and the relationship between state supervision of families and continuing racial inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We call attention to the harsh reality that we are living in troubled times. We are especially conscious of climate change and COVID-19. We underline that these challenges impact all people. In light of this reality, we use ten primary questions that all human beings ask, consciously or unconsciously, and then amplify each of the ten primary questions with nine additional sub-questions. We then draw upon one of the great teachers of spiritual wisdom (Buddha, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, etc.) with a brief quote and then write a short “wisdom” response to the question. By “wisdom” we mean a body of accumulated reflection about the character and meaning of life. Spiritual wisdom suggests an outlook or attitude that enables us to cope, a deeper way of knowing and learning the art of living in rhythm with the soul. We use the life experience of three authors, coming from different religious and cultural outlooks.
